can you tell a person's financial status by looking at his/her clothes?

just a thought, often times we see people walking in the streets and by the "look" of them we even are able to tell their status in life by the way they walk, by the way they wear their clothes.. do you think that just by seeing them with what they wear is a good basis of us knowing their financial status? I mean, it is different for everybody and well i sometimes think too that it would show somehow in our appearances. your thoughts on this?

LOL! I can assure you that you can't ... at least not always. There were a few times when I was out and happened to see something in a shop window that caught my attention, so I went into the store to check it out and perhaps try it on. I was wearing just plain clothes, and the store I was entering was a more expensive clothing store. I was looking for business clothes, so it was right for what I wanted but at the time I was not dressed the part of the "business person". The employees at the store acted like I was a bother and assumed that I could not afford the clothing there. I assured them that I could definitely afford it but would not be buying it as I would take my business elsewhere to some place that did not judge me.

I agree with you, Hatley. Another thing to consider is that some styles are made to look "ragged" and "worn", and you buy them that way right from the store yet they cost a considerable amount more than "regular" clothes that you would buy and wear a long time to make them look that way. So even when you look like you are wearing raggedy and worn clothing they could be brand new and could have cost just as much as the clothing in other fancy stores ... they are just made for a different portion of the population, so the style is different but that does not make them any less expensive.

it really doesn't matter at all. why do you equate money with status? it doesn't tell you anything about a person. it's not important to even wonder how much money someone has.

thank you Galena. YOU asked the question I wanted to ask but was afraid to.Why indeed do any of us equate money with status? It is what is in a person that counts not how much or little he or she has but what kind of a p erson are they? Do they help others are they selfish, do they have compassion? What a person is like is a lot more telling of status or anything else. I have known some wealthy people who are zeros to me as to their being. they are mean, unkind, easy to anger, all the things I would not like in a person. Some are really great people but its whats inside that counts not money, clothes, jewelery ,cars, big houses.

I think to a degree probably yes, as better-off people would be able to afford to buy better-quality clothes, but as to whether they would choose to do so or not would depend on the person. However, I personally don't judge people on their financial status...I judge on their character, whether they be rich or poor.

I know a lot of rich people who doesn't look rich and I know someone who's not financially well off who dresses like someone who just won the lottery. Clothes can never reveal who you really are in terms of financial status, most rich guys would prefer to have plain clothes and not look rich at all. You would just know that they are rich when you see their car or houses.

I'm not sure with this question. I think the media show us the rich with this designer clothes and the poor with the second hand clothes, which may not be true. I'd say I'm middle class and I know I like to dress good, in the newest clothes. I don't think people walk around judging people o the clothes they wear, but yes if I were to look I could classify them into rich or poor. But I think that it's freedom of appearance, and that we shouldn't define people by thier clothes. Sometimes the cheapest are the coolest.

You can normally tell a truly poor person by their clothes. If they are homeless and sat in clothes that are literally breaking because they can't afford hardly anything at all then you know. If someone is sat in the snow with holes in their coat. A lot of Big Issue sellers in Britain for example. As for everyone else up the social scale to the top I think you can guess sometimes but not always. Some people have no fashion sense. Fashion isn't so important but neither is there any harm in wearing rich clothes if you want to and can afford it. Being warm and comfortable is important.

Physical appeaance is not the only basis for knowing a person's financial status. There are several factors to consider if a person is financially wealthy. A person's attitude, way of living, manners, job and the way he talks are just some of the basis. There are people who aren't financially blessed but they wear exensive clothes and most of the times popular brands. These people are those who want to be branded as "rich". Don't be decieve the people's appearance. Most humble wealthy billionaire don't show off because tey are "practical". They are using their money wisely. Have a good day!

It is true. People judge by appearance. That's the reality. That is why we have to dress appropriately to get other's attention, to let others who you are and to give good impressions on you. It is pretty hard. People pretend a lot. But if you just show who you really are i think you won't have any problems on that.

Not always. I remember reading some time ago that Linda Ronstadt, the singer. bought her clothes at a thrift store. I do, however, believe that for the most part that it is true.

I don't think we can tell about a person by his appearance or clothes he wears.I've noticed many well to do people wear simple clothes. That alone is not a good indicator of the wealth a person has. Some don't have expensive or costly taste in clothes.Others don't like wearing what is the latest fashion. So,this alone can't be taken as a good indicator of wealth.

I agree. Most wealthy people are wearing simple clothes, and avoid display of their riches.I also think that rich people becomes wealthy or more wealthy because they are spending their money wisely especially in clothes. Most people who are wearing expensive clothings are the celebrities and those who have strong ego. Some poor people are even trying to purchase expensive clothes to let people think that they are rich and not to look down on them .I think the clothes we wear does not really reflects our social status but it do reflects a person's personality.Personally I just want to wear comfortable clothes, and the most important thing is our confidence in wearing them.

well i could agree, my parents dress as if they don't care about what others think, i have friends who just walk in tshirts and all. i mean that is really no way to judge them about their financial status. :D thanks for your time in your response to the discussion. appreciate your sharing this to us... hope to see you around and have a happy mylotting day!

Sometimes you can, but sometimes you really can't. Not everyone who is rich makes clothes and their apperance a priority you see, so even if someone is not well dressed, it doesn't necessarily have to mean that they don't have money, it can also mean that they just don't care about clothing as much.

Clothes cannot be our gauge of a person's financial status. Some rich people are not fond of using fabulous clothes. They could always be seen in their jeans and tees, yet they are so rich. There could also be persons who always dress fabulously, yet they are just average people. It's just that they liking dressing up. Others could really be pretenders, they dress in fabulous clothes, yet they can't even pay their bills when payday comes.

Hi chiyosan! I can say that appearance could be one thing that we can tell a person's financial status bu not most of the time. I have actually friends whom have really something in life but rather choose to be simple. I've encountered people who dress very nice yet their pockets are empty. So we can always tell a person's status just by their clothes.

well, not based on clothes alone. a lot of people especially from the younger generation own the latest cellphones or even wear branded clothes but i can quite spot the difference between the real thing and the not. i have heard a lot of them saying they borrowed this one outfit to wear just to give the affluent look. so yeah it doesnt necessarily mean that if he was wearing it, it is his, and it determines his financial status. more often, there are a lot of people i really admire who, even effortless without all the garb, still look much their real financial status-in plain jeans and shirt. i guess its the way they carry themselves, the natural poise, the well-mannered actions tell all.

No. For instance you can get lookalikes that look like they are made of wool and silk. Another thing, if a person puts all her money onto clothes, they will not be wealthy very long. They usually buy clothes that last so they will wear the same suit for years, and classics. Too if one looks at the price of good clothes, one will not readily spend $200 or so on a suit when that money is better invested in the bank.

I think that you can make certain assumptions when you look at the way that certain people are dressed, but you can't tell their status every time as it might not be true of everyone that you see in the street on an average day. If you see people who are well dressed that just might mean that they're on their way to work; but you can't really tell whether they're in a highly paid job unless you were able to speak to them. Also people like plumbers might not look all that great in their work clothes, however that is one of the most highly paid job that there is going.

Sometimes and sometimes not. We can't be certain, I don't think. I do think you can sometimes tell the difference between designer clothes (especially high-end designers, they are often times very "fashion forward") but who knows about their financial status - they could have racked up tens of thousands of dollars in retail credit card debt to make it "look" like they have money. Which is kind of ridiculous. I like clothes that are cute, but I wouldn't wear something just to try to "improve" my "social standing" or to appear like I'm more rich than I am. That's just deceptive, and well, who really cares? The important people won't judge you for what you wear, you know?

I think yes, I mean how can they bought expensive clothes if they are poor. I can tell if the person is kinda rich or not by the way they carry their clothes, usually rich and middle class people have good taste in clothing and accessories and they are most neat in wearing clothes but there are not so rich people who's wear neat and smart clothes.

I dont think it is very accurate. Most of the time, rich people do look rich and poor people do look poor. But there are also times that rich people just dress so simple. Some low class/middle class people try to look rich to boost their ego and to tries to be looked up to, so they dress like rich people, try to wear branded clothes (borrowed and not bought) and go to expensive coffee shop (buy the cheapest coffee and just try to finish it for hours). I know a person who is like this.

The appearance of a person because of his clothes is not a gauge of his economic status. Truly rich people wear clothes simply, just like someone I know who is comfortable to wearing a simple white dress when she goes to church despite the number of malls her family owns.
