Do you tell them they're full of it ...

When you read a post from someone who is clearly, to your mind, being an idiot? I suspect that most people will answer NO, on the grounds that it's impolite or unkind, or un-Christian, or un something or other else, or it will make them unpopular (gasp!). I, on the other hand, take the view that it MIGHT be simple ignorance, and that saying nothing allows them to continue being an idiot on this particular issue. I'd rather let them have it with both barrels, since I couldn't care less what some stranger who is also being an idiot thinks of me. I justify it by imagining that it might make them think about it, and perhaps even modify their stance. Besides, if I'm in the mood to reply rather than ignore it's usually because I fell out of bed this morning, and it's fun being the "heavy" lol. Perhaps an example might be useful? "Did you know that Satanists sacrifice female children all over the world on Halloween?" I mean, what can you do with someone who thinks like that? Lash

I was kidding , if you read the satanic bible you`ll see it`s not such a bad book if you ignore the insults written there.I readed it a long time ago after i talked with a friend and i was surprised to see that some things are not like i thought they were...the bad thing with the so called satanists is that only a few of them will read that book and even the ones who read it need to re read it from time to time.

Hi Grandpa! I never tell anyone that their topic is quite idiotic or nonsense as i dont want to hurt anyone here. I must agree with you that there are some who post topics on in here for the sake of posting! There are many times also that whenever i see topics like that, all i do is laugh and wont even read the whole discussion.

But my point is that if everybody does what you do, these people will never learn that they are being silly. They may not anyway, but at least if it's pointed out to them they can at least consider it. Lash

gandpa_lash...even tho' I respect your opinion here, I must admit that I do not have the time...nor the energy to rid the world of "non-sensical" diatribe/beliefs/mentalities..and moralities! I find it much more effective to WEED my garden..I make productive headway there, and can relish in the positive results! Calling a spade a spade, is fine...but so is beating your head up against the wall---'cuz it feels so good when you stop!Have a great one!

My goodness...you are up early this morning...and is this the right side of the bed?????? It's 3:29 a.m. here, and need that second cuppa...get the pistons fired, but need to ask the question....is this your way of humouring yourself, or do you really feel that you can make some in-roads? I have this vision of you blasting some-one.....with tongue in cheek!

Mostly I ignore the discussion. I usually ignore anything on religion. When I was younger I used to try to explain the error of their ways to people I saw as misguided. Over time I have come to realise that these sort of people are so totally brainwashed by their lying Church that they will never see the truth unless it bites them on the nose and maybe not even then.

If one is concerned about what other people think, is he not the slave of those people? When one constantly tries to impress the people around him, he is putting himself in bondage to those people. He is tempted to sacrifice or mask his beliefs and even his dignity for the sake of peoples' opinion. It's a sad and shallow behavior. And at the end of the day, what have you gained? A false, fragile acceptance? Sounds empty to me. I think when someone says something stupid - like a hate filled rumor for instance - then yes it is good to speak out - lovingly of course (lest you take yourself down to their level). We should especially speak out if what that person says goes against what we hold to be right or true. A man or woman who backs down on issues sacred to him or her is no man or woman at all. However there are some people that aren't worth the effort. For example those who say "all Liberals are *******, *** idoits!" Or those who say "Conservatives are stupid, intolerant, uneducated, rude etc rednecks!" are so entrenched in their position that all you will get from arguing with them is a bad mood. It's a case by case shot. :)

My favourite quote is from J S Mill, who said, "One doesn't have to be stupid to be a conservative, but most conservatives are stupid". I might say, "Just because you're a liberal doesn't mean I have to like you or even agree with you,", and I often don't, despite the fact that I am a liberal Greenie myself. The extremes at both ends of the political spectrum are almost completely blinkered, and to pinch a line from a famous Australian comedian, "Never argue with an idiot", so you're right, a waste of time. But in a discussion like this there will be others who aren't as blinkered, so rather than argue with such an idiot, I will tell him he is an idiot and why, so that others may perhaps learn. Of course I couch it in slightly less blunt terms than "idiot", but the point is clear. "Lovingly"? Must be a girl thing. lol. Lash

Interesting example.. you can't do anything. I don't like remarks like that esp. not if that person is not showing examples or proves of that. Only idiots believe that or christians.. the kind of people who are not able to think by themselves, the cattle that believes every word the priest or pastor is telling them. I already have no respect for christians because this is the group that is always pointing at others, kill in name of their god and still think they will make it into heaven. Not to forget to mention the fact they find incest, raping and raping priests normal as well. I don't think anyone who is comming up which such a rediculous remark thought about it for 1 second. This is just a person who read something or heard something and starts a discussion about it but is not able to give a reply on your respond that shows he really is interested in the subject. Did think it over, read books, info about it or even joined a satanic group and shares his own experiences with that way of living. In the eyes of a christian everything that is not allowed by god/the bible is satanic. The Catholic church started with it and the inquisition tried to get rid of everyone who was different and not willing to believe the new ideas (where the emperor was more important as the god). To make it a bit easier at that time they took over some religious dates and made up their own idea about their god and a son. Many celebration days changed since them mostly because it also has to do with making business and also because there are countries who never had this kind of celebration at all so they gave it an own face. Halloween is one of the celebrations from the old believes. Those who are really interested in that will go look for information instead of spitting out nonsense and show how stupid they really are. I would not ignore a subject like this and say my opinion about that. Although I don't think it will ring any bell with the idiot or make him think different. Why? Because these kind of people live the easy life, they are not able to think by themselves, they believe everything that is told, they will never investigate it themselves. These are the dangerous people, the gossiping ones and the ones you need if you are a dictator or terrorist.

Hi Grandpa, It all depends on my mood and the topic. Some topics are just too ridiculous and I'd probably just walk away from them. The one you used as an example is an example of one I'd probably tell the person just what I thought but in a case as crazy as the example you gave, I'd probably not stick around and engage in an argument.

grandpa_lash, Before I decide on whether to tell them they're full of it, I would perhaps ask myself if I have enough knowledge to refute or straighten them. To me, these people might just be like us falling off the bed and find an unreachable itch to scratch instead of pain reality. Some people are just like that who does need a kick than a scratch but to me, it does be no good firing the first salvo to see where the birds will fly for this one. Because, this person may not be in the right frame of mind for anything constructive to come out of it. So, I'd let this one go and let the world know that he's the idiot than hop on his bandwagon and become one myself. Leave it, I am sure your talent is much worth elsewhere.

It would be nice to think my critiques have such an effect, but I'm sure than most of the time they don't. Still, there are times when someone writes something that is so patently stupid I simply can't let it go by. It also depends on my mood. Being in pain most of the time I tend to be a bit snappy, especially when I'm tired. Lash

yes if I think they are but as I do not want my response deleted I try to stay within some sort of decency here as I need the earnings I make to pay my internet bill or I cannot even be on mylot. I told one person she is thinking with 1970 thinking in regard to microwave ovens, she got rid of her as she thinks it causes cancer I told her that is nonsense as it was proven microwave ovens are safe. its hard to suffer fools but again you get too nasty mean back you will end u p in the deletion pile so what good does that do?If they are spouting urban legends I tell them so.

Hmmmmm I like the honesty way of going about it. I think that you sre on the right track. I do not think that we are here to win brownie points. Who in the heck comes up with those kinds of topics. If I do not agree I make sure that my opinion is known. Now if people do not like that they can suck it up. Whether or not I am nice about it is dependent on how ignorant their opinion is.

it doesn't matter, the situation is always normal to me, i am that too when i was in highschool and in early college, one of my classmate i call him similar like that, then i fell mercy to him when i reach home, what i did is wrong, since there are times that i know i am in the right side but it's wrong to call him like that, i may start looking myself unto the mirror and i what i see is "Under Heaven We are all equal" now, that is the reason why i never speak bad words whatever the heat of conversation, since speaking of bad words is to let go any new information's that you will possibly lean... because i believe that when you start to argue, he or she will counter response you another accurate reasons, so that is the reason why i learn again something... about the star? i know that it will decrease but star is not important, the important is the knowledge that i get to the different types of people, and attitudes.... it is like comparing Chuck Norris is a BLACK BELT so what? while Manny Pacquiao doesn't have any black belt but he's good Bruce Lee and Mohammad Ali doesn't have any black belts but their good too the same understanding about star but that most important is i learn, and i really learn something not only to you but to many members too.... but i really like the way you said before: that you can't blame the cash on a cash register machine if you can't handle temptation, when i said that i make it like a golden rule it means that i appreciated your response, and until now it is one of my added vocabulary that you cannot blame woman if the man tempted because of physical body structure appearance whatever hope you understand but my English text, well, not all Filipino's are good in English, i am one of the English Subject Hater during high school school days

I would assume that they're extremely uneducated and don't really know what they're taking about. I don't know if I'd think they're an idiot, but just someone who doesn't have a lot of experience or education. I usually just laugh it off when I see posts like that. It reminds you of how close minded some are. Then again, a lot of people on here are from different countries and we don't know what they're taught there. They could live and experience life in a whole different way than what we're used to.

It's mainly the loonies, particularly the religious and political loonies, who trigger this reaction in me. And it's not ignorance that gets me going, it's arrogant ignorance, the sort where they have no idea how ignorant they are but insist that they are experts. I like the ones who will tell you something is true, say in the area of culture, that you know is not true because you're a cultural anthropologist, but when you point out that they are wrong and that it is your own education and experience that tells you so, they will tell you that school learning is irrelevant, anyone knows that ... and repeat their idiocy. That's the reasonable response, but I am not talking about people just disagreeing with me. I've heard "liberal" Greenies, of whom I am numbered, make idiotic remarks about things they know nothing about, and I go for them too. The example I used was to demonstrate the sort of over-the-top stupidity I am talking about. Lash

yes, but responding to the unreasonnable has to be a question of judgment. as awinds is right when she says that you become somone's prisoner if you allow yourself to get too angry. but on the other hand if there is an opportunity to effectively make a point, that is going to make a difference then its worth doing, but its not worth getting sucked into a discussion full of people who all agree with each other, no matter how absurd what they agree about is, as under those circumstances its just a waste of energy.

Not in so many words. If someone says something that makes them clearly look stupid, I might be one to make a correction which tells all other posters this person is an idiot without directly saying it. I think it's more fun to poke fun, even if it sounds mean. I mean if it's an innocent error, I will politely correct them, but if it's something that's just plain dumb, that's where I like to have fun with it.

when someone says that i am stupid, then the first thing that comes to my mind is: "Did i do something wrong? and i did it wrong because we can't see our own faults, but other's can see if we are changing that were not suppose to be now compare to our attitude yesterdays" it is like very easy to give advises to your friends but when we are now the victim, it is hard for us to advice our self, then we need the advises of our friends...
