Did You Make Any Craft Goals This Year?

I'm wondering what craft goals, if any, you made for this new year. I actually made several-- I have quite a large stash of craft stuff. My goal now is to use it! I figure, that without buying anything else (other than thread to sew with), I can keep myself busy 2 or more years with just what I have in my stash. Originally I thought I would work on only one project at a time, other than my sewing. I just can't do it, I get bored too easily with just one thing LOL So far I'm keeping with this goal--making it into my craft room to work on sewing, even if all I do is cut material or do some ironing. A goal that I didn't have in mind came about when I ran across a blog with a granny square a day 2012 challenge. What a way to use some of my yarn stash and I hadn't crocheted a granny square in years! It's going to be one big blanket by the end of the year, that's for sure. Marsha

I had a little help with creating my goal for this year. My son announced that he's going to be a daddy around the beginning of August! So, needless to say (as a fellow crafter you already know what I'm going to say), I have dozens of projects swimming around in my noggin right now. I'm working on the first project now and should actually finish it today so I can get onto the next. Like you, I get bored just a bit too easily. lol I'm finishing up the first of many baby blankets (knitted) and plan to add a baby bottle cozy and tissue box cover to go with it as soon as it's finished. Next will come the first of many layettes. But, along with the knitting and crocheting, I'll also be sewing baby clothes. I "invented" a diaper when my oldest son (the daddy-to-be) was a baby and they worked great so I'll be making a few dozen for the new baby. I also found the cutest baby bonnet pattern and hope to be able to use it, if the baby is a girl. (The pattern is too frilly for a boy.) I also have patterns for baby shoes (cloth), bassinette and crib accessories, nursery wall decorations, etc. that I'll be making, hopefully all before the baby comes. Well, some after since I don't know if we're going to find out the gender until after it's born. Anyway, aside from that, I've been trying to work faster on some things I've created that are nothing more than gag gifts, mainly geared for men. I've been selling these things and am getting more and more orders so I've had to get busier to increase my stock. I may have to hire people to help me if it keeps up but I'm not complaining. lol Good luck on your huge granny square blanket! That's quite an undertaking. I want to ask you what that blog is called but I'm almost afraid to since I already have way too much going on.

Care to share your diaper pattern. I have seen some, I would like to make some for daughter. She would like to use cloth although her hubby and my hubby do not like the idea. I think it would be helpful for them to do as it would save money. So far she gets to stay home with the kids because she is very frugal.

Sure! Let me get some photos as I make one because it'll be a lot easier to explain. I ordered some printed flannel (that's what I make the diapers from) and, supposedly, it's in the mailbox right now so I'll be starting on these tonight if all goes well. I'll write instructions along with taking photos. Give me your email address and I'll send them to you when they're ready. You're right about them saving money. I don't understand why more people don't want to use cloth diapers, especially in this economy. Sure, it takes more work to rinse the poopy diapers and wash/dry them but in the long run they could save hundreds of dollars, if not thousands. Besides, cloth diapers were all there were not too long ago and we all did okay. Also, they use Velcro so no more finger prickz from those pins! I can't tell you how many times my finger got pricked by those pins which is one reason I came up with my design. I got them patented way back when and have renewed the patent but haven't sold them on a large scale. Maybe I should! Still, I'll send you a copy of the pattern, no sweat. After all, we're (myLot) family, right?

Sounds like you are super busy and congrats on the new grandbaby coming! The blog is called Hooked! A Crochet Addicts Blog---just in case you do decide to check it out. I really need some ideas for gifts for both boys and men that are handmade. I had a post here in mylot and got some suggestions. I've put up a linky page on my own blog for others to link up ideas, instructions, or gifts they have made. I'm really hoping it continues to grow. There is a lot of link ups already and it's only the 23rd day of the year. Now if I can just keep my own goal and get in there and find some of the things that I can make and get started on those hand made gifts. All I've made so far are a few gift bags--that was just an experiment to see how they would work. Marsha

Mine is similar to yours - to use up my stash! I mostly knit and I have so much yarn that I decided not to buy any until I got it down to a reasonable level. So what happened? A friend sent me a box of yarn! So I can't buy any at all probably for the whole year. I have a lot of knitting to do.

No, I'm not complaining about free. My sister in law gave me two big trash bags of yarn a few years ago and I'm still working on that. Most of it is worsted acrylic, though, so I've bought yarn here and there for certain projects. Our Goodwill here doesn't give us much of a price break on yarn, but I've bought it at garage sales for almost nothing. The antique washing machine is in weekly use. I grew up using a wringer washer so I was thrilled when my brother in law said I could buy this one from him.

You sure can't argue free though. I would guess over half of my yarn stash was given to me by a few church members either cleaning out their own stash, or their mothers. I also can't pass up buying a skein for half the price if I see them at the Goodwill store or other second stores...or at yarn sales. Very little of my stash did I buy new, and the only reason for that was that I needed a certain color for a project. Marsha p.s. I love your icon with the antique washing machine.

Hey, what neat ideas. I make intentions, not goals, but it is the same thing. My intention is to finish the projects I got started. I could make a list of maybe ten to finish. That would make my progress something that I could check off, and would let me see the progress I am making. I may run to notepad to make a list right now. If you can do two years, I could probably do ten.

I seen several in their blogs that have made lists of crafts they want to complete. It's not a bad idea at all to make a check list. I have a quilt started but I'm so afraid that I'm going to run out of the material before I get done. Only time will tell for me as I'm no good at measuring and such to see. If I do run out I sure hope I can find some like it to finish it up. It's going to be pretty. I want to start a quilt as you go with my scraps----I need instructions! I hope someday you can stop by and show me in person how to do it. Marsha

I haven't made any goals but like you I have a HUGE stash and several projects begun and not finished. There's heaps of fabric, knitting and crochet projects, painting and drawing projects, photography projects, home decorating projects...I even have a caravan I got hold of to clean up and decorate. I'm just not into sitting down and doing a project from start to finish in one go. I have a home and garden and several pets to look after and of course the Internet so I have little free time. What I have done though is taken up a new hobby...how silly is that?? I've begun beading and already spent several hundred dollars on supplies with so many ideas filling my head. By the time the goods arrive, I've forgotten what I was going to do with it. I'm learning as I go too. It's apparently a very addictive hobby and I must say, I cannot stop myself from spending hours daily just looking at all the gorgeous beads and other things available at very reasonable prices. I've made a few things and I figure I will have to start selling some soon or else I will be broke with lots of jewellery.I have no idea how to market my stuff. Sounds boring to me.

I would like a new hobby of scrapbooking but gosh, I know that's not cheap--and I would want someone to scrapbook with. I bet that if I check the scrapbooking shops they have meeting times or something. I've learned about a lot more times I can go out and sew at other places. I almost have to take part in those to get any sewing done since when I am home I want to be in front of the computer more than I really want to be in front of the sewing machine. Actually I want to be in front of the sewing machine, but my wanting to earn money on the computer gets in the way. I don't market myself well at all. Most of my orders do come from others that I have met online at this website or another. Marsha

My goals are a lot like yours. I want to use up the materials I have now. I have signed up at a few places on the internet and I hope to start selling my items on them. I would really like to get things built back up to the way I had them years ago.

One month in to the year and using up materials that I already have is already proving to be a daunting task! I wish you the best of getting things listed online. You will have to message me on one of the other websites and let me know when you start listing things. Marsha

I have a few projects in mind for the New Year. I did 5 cross stitch pictures and want to get them framed. I want to crochet a blanket for my bed. I have made many for others but never one for myself. Next is to get more of the kids scrapbook pages done before I forget what happened and when. And finally get my new craft room more organized so that things are at my fingertips without searching through boxes and bins to find what I need.

I ran across a box in my mom's basement just full of school work and pictures from when my kids were younger. I have a thought that I would love to put them each together a scrapbook for Christmas this year. Problem is that I have never done scrapbooking. The other problem is that I bet it's not cheap to scrapbook! Marsha

Scrap booking can be very expensive. I have all the cutters, scissors for decoration of the edges, stickers, papers photo albums. Sadly...ive moved to digital scrap booking and getting my albums printed online from blurb.com and it actually saves me money on it takes a different sort of crafting skill. If i didnt enjoy my computer as much I'd go back to the paper way!

You are right...scrap booking can be expensive if you go for all the little frills. The things that you need to start is a scrap book, glue dots and some background sheets, plain scrap booking sheets and possibly some stickers and an acid free pen. Put the background paper down in the book. Cut the photos out and frame them with the plain paper. Use stickers or just the acid free pen to add notes to each photo. Later on you can get some plastic stencils to use to cut out plain or decorative paper and place the photo inside. Then if you want to do a fall page you can cut out leaves or a pumpkin to glue the photo on instead of purchasing die cut sheets with the patterns already punched out. Doing a book for each child is great. Then when they leave they can take their book with them and remember all the great times shared with you and their siblings. Happy crafting!

I am going to knit a lot of Christmas gifts, as well as some diaper covers because we are cloth diapering. I plan to knit 2 things per month so that at the end of the year, lots of presents are done. I was planning on trying to cut down on my stash, and then I went out and bought a lot more yarn. Fortunately I should be able to use the new yarn fairly easily.

I actually do have some goals. 1. Crochet four hats monthly. I have done so far this month 8, so I am off to an excellent start. 2. Organize my craft room always a challenge. 3. Market my business as much as possible. 4. Use up all fabric scraps. I think all my goals are doable.

I'm impressed at your find, also slightly envious! Luckily the knitting itself doesn't take much space in the way that sewing, for example does, so I can knit about anywhere, but it would be nice if I had someplace to put my yarn and supplies other than a bunch of plastic totes.

Yes, they sound very doable for sure. Over the summer we hit several yard sales. At one I was able to buy a whole box of fabric for $4. At another one I picked up 3 boxes of fabric for only $10. I ended up with a whole other box full from the other sales that day. I've gotten those down to 3 boxes now. This was on top of the fabric I already had. I so want the cubby storage units to organize my craft room!! Right now I have to dig down through boxes and totes to find what I am looking for. I was so fortunate to find a crafting desk at a yard sale for just $5. I'm still in awe of it. It's solid wood with the 2 leaves that fold out. When it's all open it measures about 3 feet by 8 feet. There is a top drawer on each side as well as 3 drawers on each side of the sitting area. I do have those drawers filled. I also found that when I set up one of my folding tables it's the same height at the desk so another plus! Marsha

My craft goal is to be able to finish the cross stitch that I have started last year and to get it framed. I am also thinking of getting my other finished cross stitch work framed. I have like two that haven't been framed yet. The reason why they're not yet framed is because it is expensive. If I get a little extra then I would get my work framed. I was looking at regular picture frames but none seem to fit.

I'm having a hard time getting started on that goal of getting started on making the gifts. If I can finish up all these cross magnets I am working on and baby blocks I am telling myself I'm getting started on what will be gifts. I am getting more things listed online with the thought too that what doesn't end up selling will have those things to choose from for gifts as well. Marsha

I have a general goal of doing more knitting this year, in order to accomplish several related goals. 1) Like many of you I need to decrease my stash. Although I've gotten more selective in my yarn choices the last year or so, several years ago I got a lot of yarn on clearance at Walmart when they were scaling down their craft department and I just hate to see it go to waste. So lately I look for projects I can make with yarn I have rather than ones that will require a new purchase. 2) Continue last year's goal of giving handmade Christmas gifts. Start earlier than I did last year! 3) Look for opportunities to make items to donate. 4) Make items to sell. Look into Etsy and other ways to sell my work. 5) Develop my knitting skills. I'm what I guess you'd call an experienced beginner, so I need to learn some new techniques and become more proficient.

As I said, I know how to knit, I just don't care to do it. For me crocheting is so much easier. I seem to have pretty good luck with etsy. Over half of the people who have ordered something from me have come back and ordered more or put in special request orders. I don't like paying out the fees. I found zibbet through another online crafter. At zibbet you can list up to 50 items as a free member and there are no fees. So, once an item expires on etsy I am working on moving those over to zibbet instead of paying the listing fee again on etsy. I wish you the best of luck if you start at etsy. And, if you do, message me with your store url and I will go and add you to my circle. Marsha

No, I just started quilting again. Last september, I just decided that I wanted to start quilting again and although my Singer of 25 years did just fine... I thought I deserved something new every 25 years whether I needed it or not..so I bought a new Singer...Love it so much! I wanted one with a larger arm opening, but couldn't afford that, so the one I got has tons of stitches and things and I am now quilting up a storm. I just learned about some new techniques and even bought online some fabric, charm packs and templates and such. I finished a t-shirt quilt for one GD and gave it to her for Christmas and am currently finishing the same for the other GD to give to her before the winter is done and she can't use it! In between there...beacuse I started watching the quilting shows on TV and YouTUbe and learned some new things, I made (so far just the top) a quilt with strips and squares and triangles, and another one nearly done with pinwheels and have another one in the planning/designing stage for another GD of Strawberry Shortcake. I guess maybe I do have goals...as many quilts as possible this year! i just bought some charm packs called "Battle Hymn" which is red/white/blues with that rusty tone to them.. like Civil War era colors and will make a quilt for my son... he was a Civil War buff when he was in school...probalby still remmebers alot of it today and he is a Sheriffs Deputy so the theme still fits. Anxious to get that one started to!

I have a lot to learn in the area of quilting. I've made lots of them, but nothing close to be as awesome as what the gals at Quilt Guild bring for show and share time. I took one this last time to show--I was a little embarrassed to show it, but we do earn entries in to the yearly prize drawing for participation. When you say charm pack, I don't even know that that is. It's not been all that long ago that I seen my first fat quarter. I would love to see your quilts as you get them done! I participate in a weekly WIP blog post with the Freshly Pieced blog. I see so many great quilts being put together. Marsha

I'm so bad about picking up more craft supplies at yard sales and second hand stores...and some that is given to me. My daughter has just one scarf that she's been knitting for 2 years LOL She learned basic knitting while at a youth convention a few years back. They even gave them the knitting needles and yarn. I'm getting a knitting know-how book to review. Since I don't really like to knit, I plan to pass it on to my daughter after I get done with the review. I do plan on trying out several stitches though as taught in the book and posting pictures of my work along with the review. Marsha

Knitting makes me feel like an old lady. I used to knit when we had our babies. We had very few money (that hasn´t changed so much LoL), and I used to knit at 1 am in the morning, when my husband and our new born babies were sleeping. I needed to knit new born sweaters and vests for them. But they were so small clothes that I finished them in a week. LoL. Since them, I let my mother knit all what she wants for us!!! Now all day long I´m in a rush. I like the country wooden crafts, and the cross stitch, because I can spent in them just few minutes and let them for another peaceful moment. Blessings!

I have goals for the year but not craft-related ones. I don't really craft; my creative outlets tend to be writing and photography, rather than sewing or knitting. However, I am thinking that I need to learn to crochet or knit this year.

I've been doing crafts since home-ec classes in school--mostly crocheting. I most always have something going on my lap while I'm on the computer. Right now I'm working on a coaster for a set I am making. I love to take pictures and if they come out well I enjoy trying to make them in to products over on zazzle. I have trouble getting the sizes right so get frustrated easily. Marsha

I am buying a house and I am planning on organizing the room so that I can do many more Native American crafts (that I sell at pow wows and flea markets as well as on a web page that is being built). The room will be larger and not as crowded as the small room that I use now. I will be able make many new and unusual crafts in this room. Also I will have a fish room where I will have several central filtration systems for many tanks. This is usually called a hobby but is is a craft also. I have to craft the stands to put the tanks on plus drilling the tanks and putting the plumbing into the tanks and the filtration systems.

I was thrilled when we bought this 3 bedroom house, giving me a bedroom all my own to call my craft room! For a bit we let my daughter and her 5 children move in. I had to give up my room for a bedroom for the 3 granddaughters. But, they are gone now and I have re-claimed my room again. Now if I can get that cubby storage that I want and get things in order I would be super happy. Then there is the problem of finding the time I WANT to be in the room. The fish room sounds too cool! We love fish....however we've not had any luck getting them to live for whatever reason. Marsha

My goals for this year craft wise are to use the the yarn, wool, and fabrics i have already purchases before buying more. I was shocked the other day to find that i had a box of wool for projects i had completely forgotten about - i make a lot of dish clothes and i wondered where my wool had gone! So now i need to use it up before i buy more. I also have several quilts worth of fabrics purchased to go with patterns that i need to finish before i buy some more. I probably have a couple hundred dollars at the very least invested in projects ive never finished or started.

I am learning how to make jewelry so I can start selling it online. I have already learned how to make earings and next month I will learn how to make a necklaces and bracelets. I am hoping to learn these skills so I can make extra money for my husband and I. My husband is out of work due to a foot injury and I am his caregiver so it is hard for me to work. I have a few craft items that I am not sure if I will use, but if I do not use it I will sell it on amazon. It is hard for me to do crafts because I do not have a room of my own since I moved in with my parents.
