Etiquette, when and after you eat, should you lick their plate?

Canada

I've seen my share of people slurping and generally being messy but, is licking your plate really that bad? I mean it could actually save money and resources, Right? Think about it, when you lick the food off your plate aren't you saving money? It makes washing the dishes afterwards easier and therefore saves dish soap, when you aren't having special guests at home perhaps this is a viable means of saving money. What are your thoughts on this?

Lick the plate? - Not this man...(actually me many years ago during an "elegant" phase")
I think it's perfectly fine to lick the plate when you are eating alone, but not in front of others: even close family members might be put off by someone doing so in front of them. I would suggest cleaning the plate with bread as an alternative to the tongue. Surely the amount of dish soap saved is minimal.

I was in a particularly humorous mood when I wrote this, since my dad encouraged me to post something and, my sense of humor being what it is, I figured that this might be a funny and interesting topic worth being explored.

Why lick your plate when your dog is only too happy to do it. Saves water and energy too. Why wash the dishes when the dog has done such a nice slobbery job on your dinner plates?

No, I would never do that. I don't care much about it can save money and resources, I think that was inappropriate to do. You can still use the spoon and fork to grab every little bit of what's left on your plate, but not licking it.

Even a spoon and fork will miss slivers here and there. =)

You know, when I read this it all started making sense to me. Actually I'm sure that you intended to be funny. You certainly don't have a dry sense of humor though. I did a little research on the subject and found an article from someone who shares your point of view. They even give you instructions on how to do it right. Give it a read at: http://picodoll.hubpages.com/hub/How-To-Properly-Lick-Your-Plate

That is why I always make sure that my family knows which plate I used ^.^ I don't profess to be perfect but I practice good etiquette where it counts.

never done it in public such as in restaurant and even at home i rarely do it. since i could use my spoon to get all the food so there is no need for m to lick it especially on the plate. i only lick most of the time ice cream and food that need it but not on the food directly. it is unethical but i know n some culture they are acceptable.

Welcome to Mylot Jollygoodwot! To be honest, i laughed out loud when read this post. It is no different with how cats/dogs lick their milk bowls clean. I have never seen anyone do this. I guess it is because it is kinda gross? Furthermore, whatever is left on your plate is considered fat. I have never considered saving dish soap by licking my plates clean.
• Canada
5 Feb 12
I don't think I could stand the fat myself, glad to hear that you laughed I thought it had a funny side as well My dad suggested I post something in food so I tried my hand at it. I wouldn't let other people see me licking my plate either and I guess that would be why you haven't seen it before, thanks for the welcome! I appreciate it.

Gross...lol in no way is this ok. if u do it regularly i would think it would become habit an by accident u would end up doing it in public. If id see someone in a resturant lickin thier plate id be grossed out an probably loose my appetite...at the very least id probably laugh an make fun..but still hoggish...lmao

Well unless you are at home and your companions in the house are fine with you doing that then I do not see anything negative in it. I do that at home depending on the meals that I have recently taken. I also do not think that it saves dish wash soap because when you wash the dishes, you still ensure that you are able to wipe every area of the dish. It all depends really but never do it in front of friends(if they are not accustomed to something like that and would not laugh) and guests. It would really be a turn off for people as that is very poor etiquette.

Yes, I wouldn't do that in front of friends either. But, I think if you lick off your plate there is less debris to come off in the water therefore you change the water less often and save soap, if you get what I mean.

No need for me to read the comments any further. Dididogo response is probably the best one for your question. They answered it with politeness and thoroughness of all that needed to be addressed. ~Stjarntydarna

Hi, Jollygoodwot, you have a wonderful sense of humour . But it seems that some fellow myLotters take this too seriously. I'll admit that sometimes I lick my plate if I'm alone at home. I do it when I enjoy the meal and don't want to waste a drop of it. But as a woman who does the dishes at home, I agree with you that this saves dish soap and efforts.

By the way in my language there is an old expressions which means literally "to lick one's fingers". When you like a meal very much you can say: "It is so good, that I licked my fingers!"

Whether you decide to lick your plate clean or not, I am not bothered by how someone else eat but I believe it is not a way of cleaning the plate because you will still have to clean the plate later on after eating.

If it works for you then there is no problem in doing it. You are not hurting anyone by licking your plate.

I don't leave it at just licking the plate, just making the whole process easier when it gets to the sink but, thanks for your concern :).

hi jollygoodwot, I know this is a ligit question but are you serious...There is never any reason to lick your plate,,,When you use a plate, it has to be washed for sure, with dish detergent. You have got to be kidding trying to justify reasons to lick your plate and its ok...It very very bad manners..If you want more food get more food...What is the purpose of licking your plate and you can believe it saves on water and dish detergent.. For some reason I just keep believing this is a joke question....

Lick your plate is definitely not ok. I mean I might save a person 5 dollars a month but at what risk? You have no idea what sort of sickness a person can have and dishwashers don't always get rid of all the bacteria on a plate. If I were at a restaurant or at some one home that would be the last time I ate there and I probably won't even finish my food.

hi welcome to mylot jollygoodwot. oh my g licking your plates. You] mean people do that? I can see dogs and cats doing that, but people? oh come on now, thats gross, disgusting, unsanitary and thinking about seeing someone doing that makes me feel queasy. yuck to me this is totally wrong and disgusting.

I think you could actually finish off your food on your plate without actually licking it. It really just depends on how you had put your food on your plate in the first place. Sometimes the amount you put makes it easier to finish. I mean, small servings at a time are easily finished off. There's also one way to clean off your plate if the food you eat is soupy or have gravy or stuff like that. You could always use a piece of bread to wipe the remnants off clean and then eat the bread. I think it's more proper-looking than licking it :)

That would be the way I would do it if I were to have guests come over, I think that's a great idea and I will keep it in mind. There isn't always bread handy or perhaps the food doesn't taste good with the bread that you have, it all depends really. I don't want my friends to see me lick my plate so I wouldn't do that anywhere besides home, since my family really doesn't mind.

I don't think that you will save money by licking that plate. I mean, you will still wash it even if you lick the plat. You have too. It is just unsanitary if you wont. I guess you can lick your plate when your home alone but I think it is not so good if you lick your plate in a public area. People will just look down on you.
• Canada
5 Feb 12
Yes I don't think its a good idea to lick your plate in public either or at a friends house. I don't always lick my plate even at home, now if the food was particularly good like if there was very tasty gravy or if I just had Ice-cream then I will probably lick the plate.

I never saw anyone lick his plate and I been in many countries where people at in all different ways. I think it depends on where you live if it's allowed or permitted. Personally I don't like people who don't have manners while eating (and this has nothing to do with using a fork and knive or not). Also I don't understand why you have to slurp or eat messy. Licking your plate won't sva dish soap since it still has to be washed/cleaned. Every heard about bacteries? But feel free do do it with your own plate and don't forget to drag it around with you always, to use it again, and not let others use it.

You've been young one time I'm of it. I did lick my plate I confess and did find it alarming because when you are young you think that its all right to do it. But I know my mom didn't like it. Don't forget that discussion is to have fun not to get troubled about it.We are surely not going to lick somebody else's plate, please.

Yes in private or with people who don't mind I'd say yes it's okay to lick your plate. As for saving money on the dish soap. The stuff still on that plate won't be floating in the dishwater if licked off and therefore you don't need to change it as often. =) Good one! ^_-

Ha haa a big no for me. When you do it in the house you will find yourself doing it in public because you are used to. As long as you don't leave food on the plate there is no need to lick it
