I love thrift stores!

Does anyone out there love thrift stores as much as I do? I love going through everything from furniture to clothes to crafts stuff to see what's worth buying. Finding a special item that has no nicks or scratches makes my day. How about you? If you go to thrift shops, what do you like buying the most? Or, do you, like me, absolutely have to check out everything?

Is there any term above "LOVE" for thrift shops? If there is it describes me!! I can't stay away from them. I have a regular route that I follow looking for almost anything. One of the top items is anything that has been made of ultra suede. I recycle the ultra suede into paws and soles for the teddy bears. A jacket nets me from 1 to 3 yards of ultra suede depending on the size, if it's a men's or woman's jacket, and the style of the jacket. I love scoring ultra suede woman's suits because they are lightly worn and have the most fabric in them. I also look for collectible stuffed animals. I have found expensive ones in bags marked for $1.91 at one of my favorite thrift shops. I also love the outlet thrift store that Goodwill maintains in a town that is 30 miles from my home. I have found wonderful items for next to nothing. I found a 1950's bread box that I got for $2 and sold for $50! Yes, I am one of those dreaded dealers, but I try not to step on peoples toes when I shop. I go through every inch of the store to make sure that I didn't miss anything that might be great. Like a string of freshwater pearls that I got for $10 and resold for $30. I think going to thrift shops bring back the primal urges for "hunting", only in this case it isn't for food but for that special bargain that you can brag about to your envious friends. I definitely can't pass a thrift shop! Bill even spots them for me so that I can feed the need. He even will find things for me just in case someone else might spot them and buy them out from under me. When we took our trip back to Ohio, he was patiently making room for all the thrift shop goodies that I picked up along the way. Fortunately it was all small stuff that was easy to stash away in little spaces. I would love to make another trip east to do thrift shops! My next favorite thing is going to auctions. I have one scheduled for Sunday and I am going to preview it tomorrow to check out what all they are going to have. There is a jewelry armoir that I am interested in, and maybe they will have another lot of bulk jewelry. The last lot of jewelry I bought at $100 I netted over $400 from the sales. I'm hoping!

I forgot to add that Bill wasn't seriously hurt in that crash. I can still visualize him sailing over the hood of the woman's car.

Would I ever love to go shopping with you! I know a few things to look for, but mostly if I find something great, it's pure luck. With Bruce ill, I would love to sell on the Internet, but getting out to find items is next to impossible, except for the little store about five minutes from my house. If I'm there, I know I can get home asap. I need something to keep me busy other than my writing. You are a pro and you have Bill helping, to. I love it! Hugs, Maggie

How about garage sales? Love those, too! My son found a Waterford chrystal picture frame for a dollar and original record disks from Thomas Edison, also at a dollar each. Me? I love to find pretty jewelry. Hugs, Maggie

I visit thrifts stores once in a while. Usually I look for trinkets that seem to be unique and might cost more if I resell it. It's actually like treasure hunting :) Well, thrifts stores here in my country are really an assortment of stuff so it's really fun to rummage through all the stuff being sold.

I love shopping in thrift stores because I can get great deals. I sometimes buy books and clothes. I love to save money and buy so shopping at thrift stores gives me a chance to buy and save. I also love shopping at garage sales because one can get bargains as well. I just bought a dresser for 18.00 and will be painting it. I love buying furniture and giving it a whole new look. I check everything out when I go into these thrift stores.

It's fascinating to see what everyone wants from these shops. It seems each person is differentin what they look for - it may just price or maybe they're looking for quality of an item. The main thing is, however, everyone wants and celebrates a good bargain! lol Hugs, Maggie

I love thrift stores also. I collect costume jewelry so I always look at the jewelry and other collectibles. I really love grab bags. When I need clothing, I check out thrift stores for that particular item but otherwise do not do clothes shopping at thrift stores. I am interested only in small items. I have found that thrift stores have gotten expensive. I prefer yard sales or church sales but because of my schedule can not always get to them.

My sister waits until an hour before the yard or garage sale is about to close and then goes in offering pennies for items she wants and usually gets a boatload of goodies for a couple of dollars. I keep trying, but don't quite have her knack yet. Hugs, Maggie

That sometimes works but I have found the best yard sale items go fast. Or the things that I really like go fast and go early. Costume jewelry is one of the first things to go. When I get to a garage sale late, I find only the stuff that no one else wanted. Of course, I am looking for only small items and collectibles. Every so often, I buy some clothing. I do not drive so I have to stay in my neighborhood and look for items that I can carry or put in my bag. Your sister probably drives and takes everything available away for a few bucks. She is getting a great deal and doing a favor to the people having the yard sale.

I, too, decorate my house from thrift shops. At the one near my house, I bought a beautiful sofa and loveseat and found perfect matching tables. There were no scratches on anything. The arms on the chairs were protected by covers, so even those were in perfect shape. The whole setup came to a grand total of $175.00. My friends think I bought them new! Looking for a good dining room table and chairs now. The one I have has seen its last days. Hugs, Maggie

I know you miss it, so I'm gonna do my best to shop for you. Since my husband has gone under the care of hospice here at home, I don't get out nearly as much as I would like, but he's worth missing a bargain or two. Hugs, Maggie

Love your name for Goodwill. They have some great items in there. When I lived in Florida, we had a huge Salvation Army store and they had the best furniture! What was great was the manager was willing to bargain with you if the price was too high. I furnished a condo we were trying to sell with mostly items from that store. It was beautiful! Hugs, Maggie

I really do like to visit thrift stores but I don't have the opportunity to do it nearly often enough. When I visit one, I like to be able to look at everything and when you are shopping with children, it is virtually impossible to give things the attention that they need to make sure that they are the perfect item. However, I will admit that nearly none of the furniture in our house was brand new when we got it, we either purchased from friends, had things given to us, or bought at thrift stores and yard sales.

One thing about thrift stores, they prove you can live on a budget! It's a whole lot different than buying all things new from stores. And some of the ritzy namebrand bargains are awesome. Hugs, Maggie

I love going to thrift stores. Buying Thrifty stuff makes me happy. It's because it made me realize that a thing need not to be expensive. It made me realize that we can stretch our money through Thrift stores. Most of my clothes and shoes were from Thrift stores. I make sure that I can never buy a stuff that worth $1. I also make it a point that those that I purchase do have a better quality.

I've never had the pleasure of going to a Japanese thrift shop. How I would love to visit one! When I worked with the Oceanographic office in Maryland, a lady always asked the folks going on trips overseas to bring her dolls - the collectible ones in cases. Those from Japan were by far the most beautiful. Hugs, Maggie

I LOVE going to thrift stores but i only seems to get things for my kids and books. i am not into buying the furniture because a while back there was a bed bug outbreak and i am not ready to have the chance to get them. even the clothes that i get go straight into the washing machine when i get home. there is nothing like it when you go to a thrift store and you come out with 1/2 your christmas shopping done and it looks like you spent a whole lot on everyone :) no one ever has to know :)

Hint for buying furniture. Buy it on a sunny morning. Leave it out in the sun all day, with cushions and pillows laying out on a sheet. The heat from the sun kills any bedbugs that might be hanging around. That's one reason our moms used to put mattresses out in to sun all day in the summer. Any space that can't be reached by the sun can be reached with a hair dryer that has the special narrow nozzel. Turn it up high and run it over seams in chairs, etc. Hugs, Maggie
