man sues over concession prices

I am so glad someone finally has the cash to take some action on the movie theater industry. The cost of going is already plenty enough with out being robbed at the concession stand. And you know if you take your kids you have to have some sort of snack. Between ticket prices and concession prices (let alone not having a purse to hold enough for everyone ), who can afford to go? http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2012/03/michigan-man-sues-movie-theater-over-high-price-of-snacks/ One would think if they charged prices like regular retailers and restaurants do their sales volume would increase and it would draw more people to the theater instead of away from it.

Except it would a more productive to sue the studios. My theater, if we're really lucky, get a dollar a ticket. Significantly less when major films are released. We then have to rent the copies of the films from the distributors and buy all the posters and 3D glasses. Then there's the building's rent, utilities, renting the projectors, staff. I've been working at my theater for almost five years and I make a quarter over minimum wage. Concessions pay for everything the tiny ticket profit doesn't. No one likes charging people that much, but it's what corporate makes us do to even come close to making a profit. I'm not even sure my building was profitable this year. Long story short, the studios and distributors are the main reason the concessions cost so much.

that's a ridiculous thing to tie up the courts with though. you don't like it,just don't go. i wait for things to come on cable-i refuse to pay the price of movie or food at those places.plus there's the wailing baby factor for those prices.. if enough people stop going,i guarantee you they'll drop prices.

Good. I hope he wins his case. Their prices are just crazy ridiculous. I used to sneak snacks in but you know when you have kids with you, they always want to buy something regardless of how many snacks you bring. And their popcorn smells so good, it's hard to resist.

That is true too. There will never be enough snacks or a big enough purse to make everyone happy. Once I see the prices I can resist easily!

I know how expensive it is! I had 2 kids and I'd buy a large refillable drink and we'd all share it. I'd bring snacks from home in my big purse. But if you have more than 2 kids that would be problematic unless you could train them to sit 2 hours with nothing! On the other hand, films (CDs now, I imagine) are more expensive than ever. I know they have employee costs, maintenance, leasing the building, utilities, etc. But I decided to look up the expenses involved n operating a theater and here's what I found: http://themovieblog.com/2007/economics-of-the-movie-theater-where-the-money-goes-and-why-it-costs-us-so-much/ It appears that they make their money mainly on concessions since sometimes the studios take everything they make in ticket sales depending on what movie they are showing. It's a really messed up business model, made worse by stars' and directors' exorbitant salaries and people not being able to afford the theater anymore. If I want to see a movie nowadays I either rent it from RedBox or wait till it comes on TV and tape it. I, like so many others, can't afford the theater anymore.

Rafiholmes, I always carry a purse or wear a jacket that has room for a 16 ounce bottle of water. I buy them on sale for my emergency supply and when I use one I refill it dozens more time with tap water. Very economical!

Thanks for that insightful link there Dragon. That's soooo sad! I guess I can understand why they charge it but they don't make it affordable to keep people coming in. Like you said it's a very messed up business plan.

I think that it is about time that someone do that simply because of the fact that it is enough to make a person sick that they have to pay five dollars for a box of candy at the concession stand at the movie theater that they can go to Wal-Mart and buy for a dollar or less. Then there is the cost of popcorn, heck I can buy a twelve bag pack of microwave pop corn for less than half of what I pay for an order of popcorn there. They would definitely make more money in the long run to lower their profit margin and increase their volume.

I know a lot of people who would. Buying a drink is $5 now, and buying a bag of popcorn is $6 or $6.50. It's ridiculous! And it's not just there, this is happening at a lot of places. My boyfriend and I make it a habit to eat before we go to the movies because we wouldn't be able to afford to go otherwise.

Most people take their purse and bring their own snacks. I know we've almost always done that because the price has always been high. I treated my nephew to the movies and wasn't going to buy him anything at the concession but my grandmother said he'd expect it, so she gave me a few bucks and I still had to cover most of it. It's ridiculous how they rob you there.

That's funny.. but I don't think he'll be successful either. We live in a democracy where businesses are allowed to set ridiculously high prices. It would be nice if there were cheaper options though since they do not let you bring your own food and drink into the theater. We can't avoid it though.. when we go to the movies hubby HAS to have the movie theater popcorn. We get the largest size popcorn and the largest size soda, both usually come with free refills so we refill them before we leave and hubby has a snack for the next day. Popcorn is one of hubby's favorite foods, and he has tried everything he can to make his taste similar to the movie theaters, and he just can't do it.. not that I think it would make a difference. He'd still want popcorn while watching a movie. But needless to say, that is part of why we never go to movies. Not only is the ticket too expensive, so is the soda and popcorn, and it is not always worth the money since it could be overcrowded, other people are loud and rude and talk during the movie or a tall person sits right in front of you. 90% of the time I'm content with waiting for the DVD and watching the movie at home.

Concession stand prices are outrageous. Ticket prices these days are also outrageous. Unless a movie is really good I wait for it to hit Redbox. In years past when going to the movies I did pack our snacks in my purse and would purchase a refillable drink and popcorn for us all to share. My eyeballs might jump out of my head if I stopped at the concession stand these days to look at the prices.

I think it would definitely draw more people to go see the movies if they were reasonably priced. I have no idea how they justify an $8 coke! Plus the fact that you can't bring your own stuff. I think it's funny that someone is suing them too. At least it will make them squirm a little even if the claim is not won.

It really is no wonder that people smuggle food into theaters with the prices they are charging for snack.

Best thing I learned a long time ago..... when going to the movies, use coupons provided by reward programs and buy snacks from the bulk section of any grocery store. The movie theatres dont check bags, and once the lights go out it is easy to pull out of your bag. I agree that movies are way too expensive, but I think that it is partially attributed to all of the free media available online.
