I always forget about the Library as a resource!

the library as a resource - The library as a good resource

Our local library is such a good resource. My son who’s in first grade, has started reading Geronimo Stilton (have you heard about this character?) He found an old book of his big brother and when he read it, he decided that he wanted to read more of the series. We went to the library and we were able to get a few more titles. While we were there, I was also able to get some old movies that I haven’t seen. It just amazes me that I often overlook the library. It is such a good resource for some family-oriented fun. So, have you gone to the library lately? Have you gotten a gem out of there that you or your family was able to enjoy? Will the library being a good resource prevent it from being overrun by e-books? Do you like Geronimo Stilton?

I am a big fan of libraries, and we have a nice local library. I have started going there again on a somewhat regular basis. It has a nice selection of materials, and it is in a good location that is convenient to other places. If I had children, I suspect that I would spend even more time at the library--especially since I would likely be home schooling them.

There's a good selection of children's books in our library. And I often notice the same people and children there. Maybe they are being home schooled too. And just using the library as their resource. Thanks wilsongoddard.

I used to love going to the library. Just the smell of the books & the rows upon rows of books was enough to get me excited about finding a few good reads. Sadly nowadays I do not go to the library as much as I used to. Whatever spare time I have is spent on my laptop. After reading your post though it got me to thinking about visiting our local library & getting out a few good books to read. Sure they have ebooks now that make reading a book much easier, but as for me I'd much rather have a book in my hands with actual pages that I can turn.

I forgot about the library too! So, if I could remind people here (just like you), of how wonderful the library is. And maybe getting something entertaining or informative, then this post has done its job. Thanks for dropping by liviaslife!

We'd go to the library regularly. I enjoy reading, as do the kids, and I'd often borrow movies as well. However, when we moved I misplaced a library book so was never able to return it. I know I have to pay for it, but don't know how much, and haven't been brave enough to go find out. Chances are it isn't much and I keep telling myself that when I have some money I'll go find out, but then I forget until I'm broke with nothing to do.

That's the one thing about library books and movies though. When my kids borrow a few things, I'd constantly make sure I know where they are. I would ask them all the time because they have a tendency to loose stuff. I'd also hate to pay for stuff that were otherwise free. Thanks kat!

I always kept good track too, and we'd visit the library so often (and books can be kept out for 3 weeks) that we usually wouldn't have a problem. That one particular book just happened to get lost while moving. I thought they were both in my car, but one ended up in the house and the other disappeared. So one was returned late and the other never made it back.

Hello bounce58 I do love libraries I go each week. I try to encourage kids to pick a book too. But as they have the school library they prefer it. I love to pick up books for my husband and I. When my father was mad with me, he closed my door and he threw by a book... read it!! He shouted, while closing the door. My mother also loves the local library. I took her there once, and she loves to go over again, to watch old movies, to take some books and to hear classic music concerts. I don´t know Stilton Blessings bounce lol .... dainy

Oh yes bounce and it`s very helpful to have health finances. On saturday my daughter asked me for a brand new book at the supermarket, so I remembered her that she can access to big nice libraries at our town. I think sometimes is laziness or time that stops us from visiting libraries. Isn`t it? I`ll encourage my daughter to look for a book this thursday. lol Blessings bounce... dainy

Hi dainy. My kids also have school library books. They are also encourage to borrow from their library. It's just great that the local library offers a wider selection as compared to their school. Thanks.

I go the library at least once a week. I check out so many books that I practically wear out my library card. The only thing I hate is when I am 200 on the wait list for a book I have on reserve. The wait for the book just about kills me.

That sucks! When you're # 200 on the list. And knowing that some people would take their time to read that particular book. And even go to extend when they're not finished. But I guess when there's a great selection, you could read on something else while you wait. Thanks merylinkid!

my sister could borrow toys at their library, which for me is a great idea since kids lose interest quickly. of course, these are traditional toys, not gadgets! she also borrowed videos featuring different countries for my mother to watch after dinner. geronimo stilton seems to be an adventure series that reminds me of the tintin comic books we had growing up. anything that hooks kids into reading a real book, improving their vocabulary, and firing their imagination through words is something i'd encourage as long as i can.

Although I didn't read Tintin while I was young, I am familiar with the character as I've seen the movie. And yes, Geronimo Stilton is similar (I sometimes read to my son). I think books still rank way higher than video games in terms of firing kid's imagination. Thanks!

Never heard of Geronimo Stilton! I do love libraries especially reference libraries so that I can read history to my heart's content. Here in the U.K. regretfully, as a cost saving exercise so many libraries are now open for just a few days a week. This is so sad as a library should be there to serve the community and be open in the evenings to facilitate people that work. E books willnot destroy libraries - there will always be so many people who like to hold a book and turn the pages of it.

That's sad that libraries there are open only at certain times. Like me who hold regular work hours, it's a treat for me to find the library open at times when I don't have to work. And yes it's a great resource. Thanks cynthi!

I am not at all familiar with the character Geronimo Stilton. However, I have to admit that like you, I am a person that is guilty of forgetting about what a great free resource the library is. Not only can you visit the library for books that you can bring home and read, there is also a wealth of research resources that you can refer to when doing a research project. One thing that I think is interesting is that in today's society there is the availability of checking out e-books from our local library.

I think I've heard of that from our library too! Checking out e-books. But I just a bit skeptic still. Or maybe I just like the feel of holding a book. You should look up Geronimo Stilton! I think your little one might like it. Mine sure does likes him. He can't get enough of it. Thanks!

We go to the library as much as we can! You're right it's a good resource for family fun . . . and it's FREE! We live in an area where we have a lot of libraries to choose from - so the kids love going to various ones! Oh gosh, we've gotten a lot of gems . . . I can't even pick just one! Right now my little one darts for Eric Carle books (everyone knows The Very Hungry Caterpillar). My daughter likes those cooly illustrated Graeme Base books (Animalia, The Eleventh Hour). A movie we all enjoyed (an re-enjoyed) recently was Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (the original Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka one) . . . Roald Dahl has always been one of my favorite childrens' authors. I sure hope libraries will always be here to stay. As much as e-books are apart of our generation, in my heart, nothing will ever replace a physical book. I wonder if libraries have expanded themselves beyond books (with videos/dvd rentals, story/movie time and other activities for the kids, volunteer reading, shows/events, great book sales, meeting spaces) because they need the community to keep coming to the library and show their support (to keep them alive!)! Why do I not know Geronimo Stilton? I had to look this up because often I will have seen the covers, but I still don't think I've seen this series. (Did you see this website? NOT A REFERRAL LINK . . . http://www.scholastic.com/titles/geronimostilton/ - has some games and things for your son!)

I haven't heard about Gernimo Stilton. We also love the library and go there often to get books. Buying books has become extremely expensive.

Hello daisy777. Yes, buying books has really gotten so expensive. Specially when you think that you'd have to keep it when you're done reading it. It's really better to get books from the library, where you can return it, and let others read it as well. Thanks.
