Do you can eat rice with the chopstick ?

Yesterday i went to a new open Japanese restauturant.. its been our monthly recreation, to eat with the whole my big family to celebrate someone birthday or just to do meeting between big family. And you all must be know that in this Japanese Restaurant, or another japanese restaurant (except Hoka2 Bento) only give us a pair of chopstick to eat.. i was shock and i'm afraid i can't eat with that.. but i'm too ashamed to ask for a spoon because almost all of my family (except my little sister, she use spoon because she order a miso soup) can use the chopstick smoothly.. so i try it.. at the first i still can take the rice on that small bowl.. but on the second it started to freaking me out.. and then i try and try again, i only can take one or two grains of rice.. oh my God, i think i'm f*c*ed. i can't hold it anymore so i stop eating, i raise my hand and ask for a spoon.. i get my badmood and can't enjoy the food anymore.. How about you dear Mylotters ? do you ever have an experience like this ? Hello my fellow my lotters .. please share your thought here :)

Oh that was bad experience. i think they should give spoon also since people coming in the restaurant may not be used to chop sticks like me and you. I have hardly used chop sticks. I have 2 pairs with me but i have not tired. hubby was in Japan for some time so he knows to eat with it very well. Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day ahead.

Yeah you right...but maybe they don't give a spoon to make it more like a real restaurant in Japan.. Lol So your husband and you ever live in Japan ? How does it feel ? Comfortable ? Do you can adapt well with the food there ?

He went to mount FUJI and all. I have pictures of him from Japan. He adapts well in other countries and me too. he was in Oman for 4 years and knows Arabic fluently. I am in India for sometime and I know hindi fluently.

It depends on the rice, some rice I can and some I can't but since we are in Canada we get spoons more than chop sticks anyhow.

I have never tried using chopsticks, so I suppose that it is reasobale to assume that I would have great difficulty. It does not look difficult, but considering how many people do find it hard then I imagine that it would be. It might be fun trying chopsticks, but it seems a little unreasonable to supply chopsticks only without asking the customer first. If you are paying for a meal, which I doubt will be very cheap, then you certainly deserve to be given a chance to enjoy it. If I was given chopsticks and no offer of an alternative then I would not be very pleased. It makes me wonder how they can run a business with little concern for their customers.

Yes, I realised after making the post that I had made a definite error, because you had said that you had not asked for a spoon. Oh well, I can live with my mistake because I am quite used to feeling stupid.

yeah you should try to use chopstick sometime.. just to be your experience in case sometime you need to use chopstick well... LOL its not unreasonable.. its just the theme of the restaurant is like that.. its like when you go to the pizza or pasta restaurant you will not given spoon but only fork and knife..

Most of the oriental restaurants in this area offer western style eating utensils. Some offer chopsticks wrapped in paper in a container in the middle of the table. I have a hard time eating with a fork, so chopsticks would be impossible for me.

you should try it.. fork is different with chopstick.. eventhough you have a hard time with fork, maybe you don't have it with the chopstick :)

I can eat rice (noodles too) with chopstick, but you can pick up very much at one time with them. I like eating with chopsticks and always ask for them when I go to an Asian restaurant. I have them at home also and sometimes use them to eat other kinds of food.

As a Chinese, I was asked to learn how to use chopsticks when I was young. I am not using the chopsticks in the correct, my mum didn't correct me, as long as we can use chopsticks, she thinks it' fine. We always use chopsticks to eat rice or noodles at home. Sometimes, there are no chopsticks provided for the noodles when I eat outside, and I have to use fork and spoon, I actually find it more difficult to eat.

I think its just because we used to use something to eat and when it has to change we must adapt to it... Like me who adapt to use chopstick and you adapt to use fork and spoon.. I actually a Chinese too.. My grandma and grandpa ever live in China.. But because i and my parents born in Indonesia, we are already used to use spoon and fork.. We are very seldom to use chopstick..

we are not chopstick users here in our country so i feel more comfortable using spoon and fork while eating. sometimes i use one for eating noodles but for rice, i think i will not be able to utilize it too.

Same to me almost everyone in my country also is not used to use chopstick.. The traditional one even use just the hand to eat (without spoon or fork).. But in the main city we usually use spoon too..

Yes I can and I like it as well. My kids can eat with chopsticks as well. For me it's hard to understand why others can't or why you get a bad mood because of some sticks.

Its not because some sticks only... Maybe i angry because i'm so hungry that time, and i almost can't eat anything.. And it just like i angry to myself for not learning how to use the chopstick from i was a kid.. My parents ever teach me once or twice but i'm the one who don't want to seriously learn.. And now i regret it...

I don't know how to use chopstick. So the first thing I'd ask would be a fork or a spoon. I don't even eat noodles using chopstick, let alone rice...

Well, yes I experienced it many years ago when i am working as a Japanese tourist guide here in my country but now i can able to use chopstick after a few weeks of practicing. I am glad that my sister taught me the proper way of handling the chopstick and i easy learned it. Before i always ask for the pork and spoon whenever we eat in a Japanese restaurant and i feel ashamed too but i am glad that most of my Japanese friend understand me and just ignored when i am using spoon instead chopstick.

you do the right thing there Bhebelen14 for asking for fork and spoon .. (i see that you are mistypo about fork.. you type pork.. LOL) i have done it myself.. because i'm shy i don't ask for spoon and i can't enjoy my meal.. next time i promise to myself i will not shy and be like that again.. LOL its better to use spoon and can enjoy the meal naturally then must using chopstick hardly and can't enjoy the meal.. just ignore what other people say :)

Hi,there,i can imagine how hard it is for you, just like the fork for me. As a chinese,it's a very common tableware, and i learn how to use it when i was child. So ,you know,it's very easy for me.But when you ask me to use a fork and knife to eat,i have to admit i am not good at using them. HahaO(n_n)O,have a nice day.
