hurricane expected tomorrow

I really cannot believe it. I met a GF this morning for a coffee after I had dropped the twins at school and before I went to my part time job. She said that she had just heard that we are having a hurricane tomorrow. I was not happy to hear this! So I went to an ATM to withdraw cash as the electricity may be turned off - more than a possibility. I bought some staples and lots of water then headed to my job. The Villa I manage is right on the sea so this is another task to get organised as it has to be batttened down etc. Then I went to my usual gas station to fill up as a full tank is a necessity if the electricity service is disrupted. Just heard the news and the Island is prepared by putting heavy duty machinery in place Island wide so that the main roads can be cleared quickly plus the airports are now closed. People are being evacuated etc and all seems to be in place to cope with the hurricane. Everyone except me. Just cannot get my head around this. The whole year had been more than challenging and now to cope with both water and electricity disruption? I'm a grandmother but right now I really need a mother! However, as my son will be busy in the constituency tomorrow making sure that those who have been evacuated are okay etc, and my DIL is off the Island, then I will have to be all grown up and cope with the twins throughout the day. So, I had better start loading the washing machine, fling a roast and veggies into the crockpot and make a list of necessities to buy first thing in the morning. Do you ever have days when you wish that you were not grown up?

I hate when a storm is so severe we have to prepare to the full extent. It can be scary as well. Here in NC it's really only the snow storms that we do this with. Working at a grocery store when snow is being called for, it isn't always fun. I hope that you and your family stay safe and have plenty of provisions until the power is restored. We will miss seeing you post here though. Don't forget to charge your cell phone and anything else that needs a charge.

Thank you my dear. I have charged my kindle and downloaded some books and games for the twins to read and play. The main pronblem is that my stove is electric. i know that I have a two burner table top gas ring somewhere but need to find it. I was away for 7 months and can't find anything. I will charge my phone and laptop now. Thanks for the reminder and your kind words.

The hurricane may be heading up the East Coast of the U.S. as well--they are saying that if it stays on track, it will hit NY/NJ either on Halloween or the day before (hopefully) and that it may hit New England just like the "perfect Storm" did in 1991. So you may need to prepare as well especially if you are near the coast. It will all depend on what track it takes in the next day or so. . .

Hurricane Sandy is on her way, it is going to be a big one and everyone should expect to receive rain fall and more than one hundred mile of wind coming their way soon along the Atlantic Ocean. Just sit tight and be ready.

It is expected to carry a heavy punch to the east coast region, with plenty of rain, strong wind and cold chill possibly with some snow too. The weather station call it 'Frankenstorm' of one it kind, it is an unprecedented event. Not small at all.

Please try to stay safe tomorrow. I can't imagine living in an area where there are hurricanes. Where I live the most we have are tornadoes and really there are not bad ones that often. There are many days when I wish I was not a grown up. Sometimes the stress of it all just seems to be too much. Some days I just want to curl up in a ball and sleep adn pretend I am a little kid with no worries at all.

The twins were a little scared so are asleep in my bed. I just want to snuggle them and pull the sheet over my head. Hard being grown up sometimes isn't it? It is not a large hurricane but we are so small and if it passes over slowly then it will cause so much damage t the Island. I live higher than sea level so am fine - unless a tree falls down

This seems like the perfect time to wish you weren't grown up yet! I know how you feel--I lost my mother when I was 34, and have lost my father and my mother-in-law too, and even all of my aunts and uncles. So even though I am not that old, I have no one from the "older generation" to rely on anymore, and I always have to act like a grown-up even when I really wish I had a grown-up looking after me! But we do what we have to do. . . Good luck and stay safe. Maybe the predictions are wrong and the storm will weaken before it hits. Hopefully everything will be ok.

No apologies needed, you been through a horrible storm, and though you said it isn't as bad as what some states here got, it did more damage than I ever experienced. I did see your update and so glad you are safe...

Thank you for responding and apologies for not answering your very kind thoughts. Got back internet yesterday and today the water has gone. Have stocked up though so all will be well. What the US went through was so much worse than us.

Hope everything is okay with you. I've been hearing that we are going to be getting a very bad storm in the next few days here. Even we are taking emergency precautions, and we don't normally get storms that bad here. Everyone's talking about how the storm might cancel Halloween. The way I'm feeling right now, that would be fine by me. Not only do I dislike being a grown up.. I dislike being a WOMAN! Why does everything have to be our jobs? I'd love it if all I had to do was go to work then come home and do nothing like my husband does.. or go to school and come home and do nothing like my children do. But no.. I go to work, then I go to school, then I come home to the cleaning and chores. The kids have chores but making sure they get done is a full time job which I have no help with. I came home from work today exhausted. I went to lie down for about an hour, but couldn't rest because the older 3 children were being loud.. and honestly they should know better. So that just makes my mood that much worse. Then to top it all off I have to be up early tomorrow on my Saturday to take my kids to some soccer games that will last for 5 hours because each of the kids has a soccer game one right after the other starting at 9am and it won't end until 2pm. I've also been invited to a party tonight.. but I'm honestly thinking of just staying home and going to bed early instead. I think I need rest more than I need a few drinks.

I used to wish I would go back and do some of my childhood over but what good would it do? Responsiblities are too much sometimes aren't they? But if we were children we would be afraid, stressed and etc. So I think I would rather be the adult with the experience and responsibilities that the child who is scared of the unknown.

Hi cyn~ I hope by now that the hurricane didn't hit you hard or passed over you. I haven't really heard much about it since I have been "in my own world again". I did finally "wake up" yesterday to read about it because my bf told me it was headed to Florida and asked me if I spoke to my Mom, which I hadn't. And then I read that it was on it's way to NY after the weekend! Well, that woke me up a bit! It's supposed to get here Tuesday when I have a Drs. appointment, of course. So please let us know if you and your family are alright. Sorry I've been not myself. Still worrying about my Mom and my possible upcoming surgery. Please take care~Les

hi dear Cynthie, yes, believe me there are more than a few days when I wish I wasnt grown up, wont have to get to work and battle the adversities there. I hope no damage at your place or your loved ones place from that hurricane, and I hope you were able to get to everything that needed to be done before it struck Jamaica. How are you and your family doing?

Sit tight. Hope it doesn't cause you a great deal of trouble. We went through Hurricane Earle a couple years ago. Had downgraded to a tropical storm when it hit. It really didn't do the damage feared. Most hurricanes don't make it all the way to us. They run out of gas before they do. There are days when I wish I could just be a kid.

I wish all the time that I was not grown up. Oh, cynthiann, I'm reading about that hurricane and am so worried about you. I see you know how to prepare yourself. You must be an expert at it. Bad weather like that frightens me. The worst we usually have here (Northeast US) are blizzards in the winter and those can be scary. In June 2011 there was a tornado that went through. That's uncommon for this part of the country. It caused major devastation. The report I'm reading says it should hit Jamaica around noon tomorrow and that right now the winds have reached 50mph. It's moving north-northeast at 6mph about 260 miles south-southwest of Kingston. You probably know all that. I just don't know what else to say. I'll pray for your (and the twins) safety and please come back often and let us know you're okay. This has not been a good year for you I know.

I am usually prepared with enough food for a week etc and water too from the beginning of the season. But having been off the Island for 7 months - nothing has been done. We will survive my dear and thank you for your best wishes as well as an update. I will have to leave the house early to get everything done before noonMany thanks for the prayers

I just read an update on the hurricane. You have been hit hard with much rain and 80mph winds. Oh, duh, as if you didn't know. I am praying harder than before. I'm worried as to whether you and the twins are alright. I keep coming back here to see if you've been here. The news said it struck at 8pm last night and that power was out on 70% of the island. So I realize you probably have other important things to do. I hope more than anything that you are safe.

Thank you for the BR! I really appreciate it. I've read that you survived! VERY glad to hear it. None the worse for wear, I hope. I think, in your place, I would hide in a closet and cry and pray. Praying and crying are what I'm good at. Welcome back from the storm!

No electriciyy or phones. Am answering from blackberry. Not sure it can work this way. Small hurricane but it moved slowly so did much damage. My house was flooded and one window smashed in on us whilst we huddled in bed but we are fine. So many have it worse. Still have water. Charged phones at Villa. Blessings
