I Was Going To But...

I was thinking about getting a night job at a gas station since it is right down the block from me. But my husband said no way. I asked him why he does not want me to work and he said its not that, the gas stations are just dangerous... I didn't believe him until today... I saw a story on the news where 3 people got robbed at 2 different gas stations. One got shot and is in the hospital from severe injuries... I am glad my husband said no to me working there!

Being a mom I would be terrified if one of my girls took a night job at a gas station, lol! I'm on your husbands side on this one for sure. Way too many people get hurt, not only women, but men too. Did you ever think about babysitting other people's kids during the day? I mean, I know you have 3 yourself, but maybe one or two more wouldn't be all that bad and it would be extra money for you. I know this one lady next door to my sister who was making over $1000 a week babysitting during the day for people and she started when her kids were little. She watched about 6-8 kids I think, somewhere around that. She did it for years and they always had new cars, paid off their mortgage early....it worked for her.

Oh that stinks! I'm not sure what a modular is but I guess it's not good? I think I might have mentioned this to you once before as your comment does sound kind of familiar. But I don't recall you telling me you used to watch children..how sad for you now as you can really use the money. I feel bad and I wish I could help you somehow.

It is kind of like a trailer but instead of nothing underneath, a modular has brick under it. Its kind of like a double wide trailer but a little nicer. But there are trailers down the road from me so people assume its a bad place! =( I wish I could still watch kids, I am CPR certified and everything. Took plenty of courses for it and I have so much experience since I have been babysitting since 14 years old! I would love to move so I could watch kids again...But with no money that is not possible for now. If I knew people would not let me babysit anymore I would never have moved here but it never occured to me that people would judge the way they do! I guess because I am not like that so I don't think others will be either, stupid I know.

Yeah it is dangerous as I am finding out. I have done babysitting for 13 years but the house I live in now people judge it because its a modular so I cannot get anyone to watch until I move out of here. People judge others because where they live...sadly. I used to have a Preschool in my home too, but not in this house... I absolutely love watching children and I really miss it! Hopefully we will figure something out...

It depends on the area, I worked 8 years on midnights out in the country. I would perfeer to midnights, now we only got robbed once by some guy who the polcie were actually looking for. I gave him the money, and noone got hurt, he did have a knife though. I wouldn't say all gas stations are danagerous nor nights, my friend worked 15 years in a gas station and never had an issue. Most gas stations lock the doors, and only pay at the pump or through a bullet proof window. If not it's clear they don;t care about their employees. I know here this is the case, and nothing happens around here.

Here it is really bad. This one by my house does not have a window or anything. People go in the store at all times during the night! So, I guess they really don't care about their employees. How sad. The one lady that works there said this is the 3rd time they have been robbed in a month!! You would think the owner would have made it more safe for them... She just recently quit because she said this job is not worth her life and she has young children at home.

No, especially when it's minimum wage jobs. I know I see on The First 48 all teh time people being killed at gas stations. In a few towns over the fast food places such as Tim Hortons will lock their doors after 12am, as we use to get a lot of drunks for their safety, one night a guy got stabbed in the bathroom. Where I worked they would laugh and say who cares.

I've thought about it before too, but like your husband, mine won't let me work at one either. And it is true, that working at gas stations are so dangerous. There are so many stories that I hear on the news of the gas stations getting robbed and people getting killed there. I wouldn't recommend anyone work at a gas station. Good thing your hubby told you why he didn't want you to work there.

Not every gas station is dangerous just like not every bank is but I would agree you shouldn't work there as there really isn't anything you could benefit from except a paycheck. It is not a place where you can learn new skills and grow in the company.

Well this one IS dangerous. I never said they all are, I was talking about the one by me... Right, not all banks are dangerous either. I am looking for something that can pay me, nothing else. I am not looking for a career, just a part time job to help with Christmas... I love being a stay at home mom/Home School teacher. I just want something at night so I can make some extra money too. =)

Definitely a good call. Night attendant jobs are notorious; there are several horrible cases every year, especially of female attendants being molested/injured during the robberies.

Yeah it was bad. There were 7 incidents in the last month at the gas stations in this town at night! So, I am glad I did not get a job there. It is NOT worth the $7.50 per hour for that!

Yes I used to work late as a chef and if I stayed for a pint or two it was very late by time I got off the bus home and it dropped me outside the petrol station nearby my house, there was plenty of times I saw trouble and all I wanted was a packet of prawn cocktail crisps.

Good for your husband. There have been a lot of things like that happened around here. My daughter worked at a 7-11 a few years back and I was on needles and pins all the time she was at work. Luckily she found a better job shortly. It's not worth the risk.

Yeah, glad he saved me on that one. I was just thinking that it was so close to our house and everything. It really isn't worth the risk, that person got shot and is in the hospital now. For what? Making $7.50 an hour! Poor woman. =( I hope she recovers soon.

I hope she does, too. I'm not sure that kind of risk is worth any amount of money, but certainly not minimum wages.

Oh, girl. Do you not watch any of the crime shows? The scripted ones but mainly the the non scripted ones? I'd get a job at the gas station at night as the absolute last resort.

Yes working at night at gas stations is a dangerous job. Gas stations around here are always getting robbed as well. Not in the exact town I live in but not to many miles away. The one in town has been robbed twice I believe. I'm glad that your husband didnt allow you to do this because if you had been working there that could have been you in the hospital now. Its a scary thought.

Yeah I am glad too now that I know how dangerous it can be. I really didn't think about that part I guess. I was just looking for something at night so I could still Home School my daughter. But I am so glad I am not in the hospital right now over a job! I hope that poor woman heals soon...

oh my g LovingMyBabies do n t dont ever work at a night job in a 7 /11 or a gas station. Last year a friend of my son was working a night job in a 7/11 and two gang members came in , robbed him then made him kneel, and they shot him in th heas execution style. I was horrified as Tustin has always been a city with little vicious crime but that just made me sick.He was just 25 and a good decent kid working at whatever job he could get because of our economy and they did n ot know him and he did not know them., they were hoodlums looking to kill for excitement I guess. I do not blame your hubby for being frightened for you. Working alone late at night just is not safe any longer.

That is SO sad and horrible! I do not understand these kind of people that do these horrible things to others. I just don't get it. I am so glad my husband made me realize. I was just thinking about working at the closest thing to us and being home during the day with my kids so I could home school my daughter. My husband was definitely right. After hearing this, I cannot blame him at all. I hope that woman heals quickly and will be okay, I feel so bad that it happened to her, all over a little bit of money. She has young children at home too... =(

I think your husband have the right to stop you. It maybe good to have a part time jobs but if there is danger in such case. Better to find more jobs online so that you can stay at home. There are many work at home jobs online and it will be better for you and your family. Since your husband prevent you to work outside...the better way is to work online.

Yeah I am glad he said it was not a good idea. I could have been the one in the hospital instead of the other woman. I cannot find any online jobs, I have no idea where to start with that or I would definitely do something online.

here where i live, a gas attendant got run over because the guy that filled up had filled up and was going to leave without paying for his guy. the gas attendant ran after him and the thief ran over the gas attendant and killed him. apparently, the rule of that particular gas station was that if someone left with out paying, the money would have to come out of the gas attendants pay! so naturally, the gas attendant didn't want to pay out his own pocket (nor should he have to) so he started chasing the car. the company has since been looking at their policy. i am not sure if they caught the thief but this was early in the year when this happened. i am glad your husband said no too. it can be a pretty dangerous job for sure.
• Valdosta, Georgia
4 Dec 12
Oh my! That is absolutely horrible. =( If it was me, I never would have ran after the guy. Even if it came out of my pay, my life is worth more than some money! I understand money is tight and no one wants to lose it but life is too precious for that. Yeah, I'm glad I didn't get a job there either. My husband was right for once, lol.

I do think it is a high risk job especially in this economy....with so many needing money I think anyone who works in a gas station or convience store might be at a higher risk of robbery's....he is smart not to let you. I am sure there is safer places to work.

I'm surprised that you had even considered such a job. There are routinely stories on the news about convenience stores being robbed--even in generally "safe" areas. It isn't unheard of for cashiers to be injured or even killed during these robberies. One particular story still haunts me almost a decade later--a young man murdered at a convenience store. He was young and ambitious, working hard and saving up money--trying to build a life for himself. It reminded me too much of someone I knew at the time--who had also spent some time working at a convenience store in a rather dangerous area. I don't believe that they ever caught the young man's killer, either--unless he was picked up for some other crime.

I follow local news, because I want to know what is going on in my area. I will say, though, that it can be a good way of knowing who is looking to hire more employees. So, you may want to start keeping tabs on the local news.

Yeah when your as broke as I am you will pretty much consider ANYTHING. My kids will have no presents under the tree this year so yeah I am thinking about doing anything right now to make that happen for them... You do what you have to do for your kids... I don't watch the news, ever. I am depressed enough. I was just surprised to hear of it where I live thats all.

I really do feel that your husband really did talk you into making the right decision with this one. I know that there are a lot of jobs that people can mention that are more dangerous than working night shift at a gas station. However, I really feel like there is a lot of danger in having a job at a gas station because of the fact that they are so frequently robbed and I think that you would be in even more danger from night to night being that you are a woman.
