Racoon |
|
I live in the midwest, Missouri to be exact. When I travel people always think I live on a farm. Not all Missourians are farmers. Was driving this morning and there was a beautiful racoon walking in the middle of the street. I've been here all my life and couldn't believe this is the very first time I've seen one that was alive and not splattered all over the road. The markings were absolutely astonishing. Have you seen a live racoon?

1. tyc415 (2548) | 8 months ago | I am in Texas and also see so much road kill but I have also seen many beautiful (and not so beautiful) live wild animals. I have seen racoon, opossum, armadillo, deer, javalina, wild hogs, skunks (yucky) both dead and alive. In my back yard I see squirrel almost daily and some times opossum. By the way, when I hear that someone is from Missouri I don't think farmers, I think beautiful state and of course Branson.

carolbee (4137) | 8 months ago | I've never been to Branson. I must lead a sheltered life...lol I'm in a large city and there aren't any farmers here that I'm aware of but it's funny because others always think I live on a farm. I see tons of roadkill but never anything as pretty as this racoon. Thanks for responding.

2. tiffiny (734) | 8 months ago | I live in Washington and we live in a huge city and the racoons will just be out walking around. It's nuts. There was one that walked right infront of my slider so we got our son out of bed to see wild life. Lol They are weird and scary I think.

3. ljegbers (5699) | 8 months ago | All the time. I can walk out my back door in the fall and see mom and her babies climbing trees and such. They come up to the house and kill my outside cats to be honest. We have a reasturant locally that you sit on the deck in the summer and feed your scraps to the racoons. They're tame and come right up to the deck and eat. It's really a great attraction. I don't know what you mean by the missconception that because you live in the midwest you're automatically live on a farm. Years ago I was in Philidelphia and (dressed differently) a person asked where I was from and when I said Nebraska, you could see their whole face just cave in. She actually asked me if we were still fighting the Indians. I was shocked, then she went on that being in the big city sure must be different than back home because they had running water and electricity. What?!?! I couldn't believe this. Doesn't anyone know anything? So I concocked a story that I was visiting an Aunt because the family didn't know what to do with me. My parents had been killed by Indians in a raid of our still and in all the bloodshed the still blew up the farm place. I left her there in shocked horror....Man!

carolbee (4137) | 8 months ago | Seriously, we were in Hawaii vacationing years ago and when I mentioned we were from Missouri they asked if we lived on a farm. Guess I had an odd look on my face. Our city is huge and I've only been on a farm once to visit someone and that was in Illinois. I guess racoons can be a terrible nuisance but this one was just gorgeous. The markings around the eyes were amazing. Thanks for responding.

4. lightningMD (5537) | 8 months ago | i used to live in Michigan,on the family farm no less. We used to see racoons all the time. Also deer, turkey, badgers, foxes and opossums. I think most animals in their natural habitat are beautiful. My husband just interviewed for a job in Missouri if he falls into place we will be moving there soon.

carolbee (4137) | 8 months ago | It's cold today in St. Louis but not freezing as it generally is in January. The racoon I saw this morning looked confused but was walking in the very middle of the road. Good luck with your possible move to Missouri. Thanks for responding.

5. jillhill (6239) | 8 months ago | Many years ago my sister who has three boys and I decided to take our kids camping at a state park near where my parents lived. So we had a total of 6 kids and we borrowed my dad's van which was fixed up for camping and fishing and we brought a tent too for the kids! Before you go to bed....when you are camping you need to take all your garbage and throw it or put it up out of reach. The kids had tons of toys they brought with so they were laying around our camp site. Well we forgot the first rule and left our garbage sitting in a garbage bag on the picnic table! We awoke in the middle of the night to four racoons eating our garbage....one was playing with a beach ball and one was standing on a skate board! It was the cutest thing....but they can be very dangerous! We didn't have a camera but surely wished we did~!

carolbee (4137) | 8 months ago | I bet that was a cute sight. How interesting. I was close enough to this racoon that I saw all the features and the very black rings around its eyes. I was excited and was safe in my car. I had to stop to let it decide which way to go so I looked at it and it looked at me and we were parellel to each other...lol Thanks for responding.

6. Katlady2 (3978) | 8 months ago | I used to work in a State park in the mountains over by the California coast, and we had raccoons galore! There was one that I even named...Spook...because he would sneak up on me every night at the headquarters and scare the daylights out of me. He was huge, and he was also hunch backed and he would get stuck in the garbage can every time. I would hear the can rattling, and when I walked out all I would see were his back toes hanging on for dear life. I would have to lay the can down and pull the lid off so he could get his roly poly butt out of there. Of course, then I would have to share my apple with him as a treat. LOL

7. RLFinNash (5750) | 8 months ago | hello carolbee wow! i know how that you feel about seeing the racoon. they are beautiful animals. a few years back, i was outside sitting on my Mom and Dad's back porch, it was late in the afternoon, on a nice summer day, and all of a sudden from up over the hill, as we call it, my folks' property is three acres and the back yard goes down into an embankment and if you slipped at the edge of it, no telling how far you would slid down it. but anyways, i was sitting there on the porch and all of a sudden a racoon came up and headed slowly towards me.:0 oh my god! was he or she ever beautiful! i sat really still, the racoon came within feet of me and i spoke to it and the racoon took off running back over the hill as fast as he or she could. beautiful thou. have a wonderful day!

carolbee (4137) | 8 months ago | I was too close for comfort but was in my car. Had I been on foot, I would have moved faster than the racoon. Prettiest animal I have ever seen. You sat there and didn't move? I would have been fine once I went inside and changed my underwear....lol Thanks for responding.

8. caroliewrites (133) | 8 months ago | Hi Carol, We live in the Northwest and have lots of racoons. Although they are cute and amazing to watch, be very careful as they can be vicious. A very large racoon attacked our large dog last year and did a lot of damage. Be careful.

carolbee (4137) | 8 months ago | I know they can be mean. I was away from our house about 10 miles and don't see racoons in our immediate area but will remember should I run into one again eye to eye. Is your dog ok? That's sad. Thanks for responding.

9. lilybug (7862) | 8 months ago | When I lived in St. Louis I saw raccoons all the time. Running across the road or across my yard. Now that I like out in the middle of nowhere I do not see them anywhere. Now I see opossums, and turkeys, armadillos, and a BUNCH of deer.

carolbee (4137) | 8 months ago | I've never seen a racoon. This was the first. I do see dead opossums on one of the main streets in our area all the time. You get to see a variety of animals. Thanks for responding.

10. Modestah (7402) | 8 months ago | yes, many times. I also live in missouri and we have our share of roadkill for certain - but it is also not uncommon for us to see raccoons... whole families of them, on our property trying to devise a way to get at the chickens. we've trapped many of the cute vermin. I am astonished that my post as originally written was rejected by mylot. you can not use the acceptable shortened form of raccoon!
| |
| |
|
|
carolbee (4137) | 8 months ago | The shortened form of the word racoon has always been used as slang when referring to the animal but think I understand why it was rejected. I live in St. Louis in the suburbs and we just don't see racoons. Probably because we are in a heavily populated area. Thanks for responding.
