I was totally shocked at the price of crackers yesterday! I have heard of bread and rice going up, but crackers? A regular box of crackers (a brand called Premium) was $3.79! A gallon of gas here in SO. CA is $3.79! I would have bought a cheaper store brand, I have not noticed a big enough difference to spend twice as much, but my husband demands this brand and it isn't worth the battle, but good grief! $3.79!?!?! ANd then I looked at ones like Ritz and the other little speciality styles - over $4.00 a box and for a small 13oz size box!!! I could buy a New York Steak for that or even less on sale! And for crackers!?!?!?! I am just floored! I was happy to see the 10/$10 things tho - my grand daughter loves green beans so I stocked up on those and got some for her to take home to. But $3.79 for a box of dry old crackers????!!!

Everything is skyrocketing. It's insane, I guess this is what they would call a recession. Pretty soon noone will be able to afford anything. It's ridiculous.

And right after the recession comes depression. Thing is, at least I , have not heard a single word as to WHY the gas is so high!

Yeah, I heard that but why is the cost per barrel rising? They just say "it hit an all time high per barrel today" ... what made price per barrel go up today? They never tell you that part!

The only answer we get is the cost of the barrels is skyrocketing and that is the reason for it. Pretty poor excuse if you ask me. The gov't should do something about the taxes imposed on the gas but they keep uping those too. We will never get a straight answer on this situation. We are just supposed to accept it, pay it and move on. It's a sad state of affairs!

Cold cereals... I went to Dollar Tree and stocked up on some cereals. Malt o Meal brand - and they are really good. THe ones that "resemble" Lucky Charms is better nutritionally than LC and has more marshmalows! But their captain crunch equal is really good - and all just $1.00 a box for the large box! And yesterday Kelloggs Rice Crispies and Berries - 18 oz box for $1! Also marshmallows for a dollar and I have rice crispy cookies!

Oh yeah, I have noticed that some items are going up fast and it's gonna get worse. This is what we old timers call the domino effect. If one item we depend on goes up in price then everything else will follow. When I was in the store this weekend I overheard 2 women saying they were now at the point where they were eligible to get food stamps.
With the cost of food going up and people losing their jobs there will be a surge of people signing up for some kind of assistance. This is dragging out economy down and if we don't get someone in office that can override what "Bill" Clinton signed when he was president we are doomed. We have plenty of oil but because of the environmentalists and the papers he signed we can't use it.
If things don't change soon the USA will be owned by the Oil Cartel. Yet we spend more on foreign countries than we do here....Go figure!

I have noticed that the prices have increased for almost everything.
Hubby usually stays back to pay when we go to the supermarket because I'm better at putting the things in the cart in a way that they al lfit, but last saturday he didn't go and I was the one paying. I almost had a heart attack!!!!!!
It's interesting that just today I was watching a program in TV about that - among other things - it was quite an intersting program.

Yeah, as it comes out of that wallet - that is when it really hurts! And gets scary! Thing is the more you actually see the money going, the more likely one would be to work harder to make savings - sales, coupons etc. What was the program?

The price of everything will go up as the stores have to offset the high price of gas by raising the prices on food plus flour and wheat products have gone up to so anything made with flour or wheat will be going up in price.

Yeah, just a snowball rolling down Mt McKinley. Gas fusls this country. We go where it goes. Why don't they get that? Well, I guess they get it, they just don't want it so they give it to us!

i won't buy things at those prices. i will leave them right on the shelf where they belong. someone in our government has to do something about this. this country is in a crisis and nobody seems to want to do anything about it. people cannot afford to live like this. we have not even paid our mortgage for may yet or our real estate taxes for the quarter. it is so worrisome i cannot even think about it.

I buy generic these days on many things as prices have gone way up on many things. And yeah those 10 for $10 arent always such a deal its funny who people see it in an add and assume its a good price.

Kraft is the best... I have tried the others and they just don't have that flavor - but I always watch for sales - and stock up. Reg $1.50 a box, and on sale for $1 and often at Walgreen's for less - last week it was 59ยข a box. But generic I often buy on most things, or at least store brand

Today oil soared to 123 a barrel, which means the price for everything will continue to go up. I was told that flour, bread and anything in that line of food product would be going up. I have been trying to stock up on things in hopes that I can save a little.

That is what I have been starting to do. I stocked up on dry cereals at Dollar tree yesterday too. I bought tortillas instead of bread as they were cheaper this week and works for me! I like burrito style sandwiches!

I buy as many store brand products and generics as possible. Sometimes the store brand is just as good and if it's not, well splurging on names brands on occasion is not too budget-busting.
The main thing is that if you stick with the store brand for a while, you won't notice any difference after a time. Most of the store brands are made by big-name food companies anyway and licensed to the store via contract.
As long as you know you are getting good food quality, there's no reason not to lower your food bill with some choice store-brand substitutes for family favorites.

You got that right! Just spice or season them up and they are often as good. I have noticed a few things that are not as good generic vs. name brand, but like you said, work with what you can and splurge from time to time.

I know, it is getting ridiculous lately. A gallon of milk cost more than a gallon of gas where I live. There are a lot of things that I will not buy unless they are on sale anymore. I need to check out the pantry and the sales fliers since I am going shopping tomorrow morning after my son heads off to school.

I only buy what's on sale and figure a menu out once at home. ONly way to save money. I only bought these to save a battle, but if it was up to me, I'd gotten the lesser priced ones. But it is the only splurge item I bought.

In NJ where we live... a gallon of gas is $3.45 and a gallon of 2% milk is $4.29. My tax rebate check will go towards putting gas in my car and food on the table!
For the government to not admit that the economy is in a recession is just crazy.
The costs of essentials goes up every month, the housing market is in shambles and watch how many reports you'll see in the coming weeks, about people who are having their gas and electric shut off, now that the winter is over.
And all those companies that supposedly give cost of living raises... I don't know anyone who is receiving raises to combat the soaring cost of just living...I know I haven't!

There are companies that give cost of living increases? You're kidding!!! Where are they! I want one! LIke that is going to happen! Businesses and cost of living increases so seldom ever met they are strangers.
I know city employees and such get one but us in the "private" sector never get them... at least, like you, I have never gotten one nor known anyone that did. All I have ever gotten was more work to do cause they fired a co-worker saying they had to "cut back", "down-size" or whatever the buzz word for the new century, and then they just dispurse that workers work amongst the ones "left" until they do it again. Multi-tasking - just means one salary for the work of 3 workers.

Wow! That is a terrifying way to put the price of gas into perspective. Sheesh! That is infuriating! I rarely even take a lunch break anymore because I don't want to afford the gas. Which means I work straight through the day without a break as there is nowhere else for me to go. If I don't get in my car and go somewhere, I can't just be at the office and not answer the phones. Really infuriating!

I wish there was somewhere I could walk to but, anywhere I could walk is through some questionable areas and it is just safest in my car. And, I work in a small office. Just me and my 2 bosses so, there isn't even anyone I could have lunch with or walk with to feel a little safer by numbers. So, my lunch has to be taken at my desk...no separate room in the office that I can take it either. So, until the gas prices drop, I am pretty much screwed as far as my lunch hour goes. It sucks but, there is nothing I can do about it.
