Is selling in yard/garage sales really worth the hassle? |
|
Just this weekend I sold some of my stuff in one of my friends garage sales. Since I was selling my stuff at her place I helped her set up and work the garage sale Friday and Saturday afternoon. This was my first time selling anything in a garage sale so I wasn't really sure what to expect from the seller's end. I must say for the time I put into it I don't feel it was really worth it. I made $56 with the 2 days combined. Now don't get me wrong, I wasn't expecting to strike it rich or anything. I just feel like with the time I put into sorting through all my stuff, pricing everything, taking it over to my friends house, and spending a good majority of my Friday and Saturday afternoon $56 just wasn't worth it. I ended up loading a bunch of stuff back in my car that I swore I wouldn't bring back home with me. I guess now I'm going to either set up one of those online yard sales or sell it on Ebay. Anyone need 2T clothes? hehe So do you all think selling in yard/garage sales are worth it? How do you make money on the stuff you are trying to get rid of?

2. angelface23 (1643) | 4 months ago | I had one yard sale before and it was pretty cool. I like getting rid of old stuff so if there is a chance people will buy it then I think the work is worth it. Even if I don't make that much. I will always try to sell something on ebay before I take it to the Goodwill.

There are alternatives. You mentioned one, Ebay auctions. Of course you have to make up your auction, monitor it and stay on top in addition to having one for each item. The other alternative that I find most rewarding is donating to charities. My favorite is an animal sanctuary who uses the funds they get from selling items donated to their organization. I am an animal lover and I see my donations being put to a good cause which I can support. I also am able to write off all of my donations as tax write offs come year end.

6. Thoroughrob (5449) | 4 months ago | It is alot of work, and unless you have alot of things to sell and some higher priced items, I don't think it is worth it. I set the clothes out on tables and make them .25 a piece unless they are marked differently, which very few are marked. We live on a main street with lots of traffic, so we have good luck.

7. Hatley (10825) | 4 months ago | Having a yard sale is just not worth it to me as you make very little and spend a lotof time doing that too. I would much rather spend that time going to a yard sale and picking something I wanted for little or nothing. lol

8. jdyrj777 (609) | 4 months ago | I think we all feel that way after having a garage sale. LOL! We give really good deals real cheap just because we don't want to deal with the leftovers later. Online is a good thing. I live in Denver. We have one of the largest flea markets here. I used to go everyweekend. Sometimes you make money, sometimes you don't. I no longer have a car. So i have done a little online. I have a room full of stuff to get rid of.

9. idowrite72 (863) | 4 months ago | I remember having a couple of sales years ago and I never made much at all. My sister has had them and made hundreds of dollars. I can remember going to one last year and I spent about $50 as did my daughter and mostly all on baby clothes and we barely made a dent in what the woman had. She had other things for sale as well but she had wonderful prices and the things were like new. She had a huge yard full of things and she had to have made a lot of money in the days that she was selling. I was wondering where all the things came from. I have also seen those houses where the women drag the same things out week after week. I can't imagine that they have nothing better to do and it seems that people have caught on the fact that they have been there week after week. Some of the things that they have out are old, too. I have found many different things at the sales that I have gone to and have been lucky already this year and the summer has bearly begun. My sister and I like to go and shop for our grandchildren. My daughter was just telling me that she is having one in a few weeks and I just took some things to a thrift shop a couple weeks ago that I have had at my apartment for a year since I was tired of looking at them in the laundry room!!

10. carlaabt (3075) | 4 months ago | I've never had a yard sale of my own, but my husband says I have to before we move again. He says we have way too much stuff, and he's probably right. I know when we moved last summer, it was a mandatory local move (They were rebuilding the houses in the area on base that we lived in), so the Air Force paid for us to move our stuff, no matter how much it weighed. It weighed approximately twice what they would have paid for if we were moving across country. I guess that means that I have to get rid of half of my stuff before we get stationed somewhere else! Anyway, when I was younger, I helped my best friend with her family's yard sale every year. We usually did pretty good. We had it open for about 5-6 hours a day, two days, and probably averaged around $500 or so each year. It really varied, though, depending on what all we had for sale. The setting up wasn't too bad. We usually put stuff together in areas, and just labeled that everything on this table was $5 each, everything in this box is $1, etc.
