I really like wildflowers, even the ones that people call weeds.

When I visited Minnesota, I noticed lots of dandelions, more than usual. I get back here, and i see lots of flowering clover. I also took pictures of some lovely violets. They are darker than the ones we have in Kansas. I liked the fact that Minnesota was not putting out massive amounts of poison on their dandelions, and in our environment. How do you feel about dandelions? Do you have a favorite wildflower? We have often wished that we could have a yard full of cool, green clover.

I love alot of things people consider to be weeds -- dandelions, when made into tea are actually very good for your heart and immune system! My favorite weed would have to be creeping charlie, otherwise known as ground ivy. They have purple flowers, and at least here in northern america, you can usually find them in your back yard ^_^ I use their leaves to make head-ache tea.

Is that what they also call "Gill over the ground" ? There is a houseplant some call creeping charlie, but it is not an herb to use. I will do some research. I bet I have it here in Kansas.

I think there are some plants anyone else might call a weed, that are flowers at heart. It is sad to poison something that grows in innocence, never sensing the heavy hand of man. I love Lily of the Valley, Forget me Nots, Indian Paints and Buttercups.

I have to admit that I'm like that too. There is this weed in Australia called 'Salvation Jane' (botanical name 'Echium plantagineum). It was originally introduced from Europe in the 19th century. It has a bad habit of taking over whole fields etc and I must admit that it looks absolutely magnificent when it does. But it's a real pest to farmers etc. You can actually see it at http://www.ento.csiro.au/biocontrol/patcurse.htm

I am not sure, but I think I have seen those as a potted plant in the US. Very pretty. Wonder about the name.

Weeds are just plants that are growing somewhere that you don't want them! I love dandelions, but only because I can pull them up for mt rabbits who enjoy them amoungst their greens. The thing I enjoy most about the wild flowers is how they change. One day the grass will be full of pink flowers, but the next week they will have all gone and been replaced with purple ones, or yellow. At the moment our area is covered with a bright yellow flower a little like a large daisy. Gorgeous! My favourite though has to be the occassional wild orchid that I spot. They are purple and so delicate. Unfortunately a lot of them get cut when the council clear the road edges to protect against fire.

After I lost my cable for the camera, I was able to get a "card reader" that would read my digital media cards. It cost about $20 US, and I got it at Wal Mart. Hope that helps.

I think my favorite wildflowers are the trillium, and partridgeberry. Trillium comes up and you know spring is coming, and partridgeberry is just pretty and you can grow it in a little terrarium-type bowl and keep in inside to enjoy it too. (I like to do that over the winter.) On the other side of my wood fence that separates the fields from my lawn, there's this stretch that is loaded with thistle. I know most people get rid of it, but it sure brings the birds in the fall and to me it's worth keeping just because of that. My back yard used to be part of the one field, I never put in special grass seed, and there is a whole lot of clover in it amongst the grasses. In the summer I enjoy when they're blooming because of all the little frittilaries that come and land on the lawn to suck up the nectar. Frittilaries are very small butterflies that look like a miniature monarch butterfly, they're only about an inch or so long. Sometimes when the clovers have their blossoms the yard is just covered with those little butterflies, it's so pretty to see! You know, when you think about it, almost every weed is pretty in it's own way. Once people classify it as a weed for some reason they no longer think it's pretty or has any value.

That is a good observation. In one English gardening book I have seen dandelion as a garden plant. The clover this year smells heavenly to me. Each "weed" seems to have its purpose, just like each person.

I love flowers and yes, what some call weeds. They ae beautiful. I love daisies and others. All of them! I have lots of dandelions in my yard. I also have a field in back and love to let the "weeds" grow there. It is beautiful when flowering. I'm glad I live in one of the states that uses them and flowers along the highways.

Since we do not have a yard and do not have to worry about "volunteer" plants I love dandelions and purslane, too, which most people regarded as a pernicious weed until it was recently brought to light that that "weed" is very high is Omega3. Yes, I love clover too! I have a "signature" I use on my favorite gardening forum that reads "If it is edible it is not a weed!"

The wild flowers are lovely, they are equally as pretty as the cultivated ones.My favourite maybe would be the cowslip...I love them...they remind me of being young and goingoff on nature trails ...but here in the UK its become illegal to pick many of the wild flowers, they are protected by law...talking about clover,Mums lawn has a large thick patch of clover about half way up the garen...and it is lush underfootits like a really thick deep green carpet, like walking on a piece of foam.Dandelions are fine, but each time they grow in our garden I always wished that I ha a rabbit that could nibble at the lovely tasty leaves. But Hubby isnt too keen on the dandelions..he likes to try to dig them out..and get right down to the roots to get rid of them permanently.

Hi GardenGerty! Here in Texas we have alot of beautiful wildflowers but since it wasn't a rainy season we didn't have much along the highways. We have usually bluebonnets that are so pretty mostly blue and now some are pink and white. Love the dandelions!Good herbs for you to eat!

I love wildflowers too! Often I have wished that I could plant my entire side yard with wild flowers. The only thing that has stopped me is thta I'm afraid my spouse would mow them over with the lawn mower thinking they were weeds. We have weeds really bad in our part of the country, so we have to be careful and mow the grass often. I love the look of wild flowers, especially the purple ones. I am somewhat allergic to wildflowers, so I have to avoid them, but they are certainly beautiful. Thanks for the love discussion.

I am enjoying reading all the responses, and learning about new wild flowers. It feels really good to see all of these responses. I have wildflower seeds, one of these days I WILL plant a whole section of them.

I live on the coast and some local people have actually complained about 'weeds' being allowed to grow on the beach. These are actually quite rare wild plants and flowers which only grow in a maritime environment and when they become established they encourage butterflies and nesting shore birds. In some nearby areas landscape gardeners are now planting wild flower seeds and so meadowland plants which have become rare in the wild are now blooming again in profusion. I like to see wild violets. They grow in a few places locally and I know of a some grassland areas where wild orchids grow. They always fascinate me.

We have a lot of dandelions and I don't mind how they look. I think they're kind of pretty and wouldn't mind a backyard full of them. We do try to keep them under control somewhat though because our neighbors spend a lot of time on their lawn and don't like the weeds. What qualifies something as a weed anyhow? One weed that I think is really pretty is goldenrod. We have some that comes up just behind some purple flowers I have. It makes a very nice backdrop for the flowers.

I was amazed at ow few wildflowers there are in Kansas, I hav grown up here and movd away for the last five years. When I was growing up I seem to remember seeing way more. I just movedback from Texas and they have tons of wildflowers growing everywhere, it is beautiful. In fact their state flower grows wild alogthe roadsides and it is illegal to dig them up. THey are truely beautiful. I think all flowers are lovely even dandelions.I must mention the cutest picture that I just took last week. My hubby found a dandelion while we were at the park and told my son to give it to me. In the picture he is holding it out tryin to figure it out with a scrunched up face! So Cute, Had to share.

Welcome back to Kansas, and to myLot as well. We have lots of clover here in McPherson and some other things in bloom as well. I have blue flax out by the street today. Dandelions of course. You may find that there is more in different parts of the state. I have driven down to San Antonio and seen the flowers on the roadway.
