Believe it or not! Barber in trouble with the law for cutting hair on a Monday!

Hello All,
You're not going to believe this! Talk about a ridiculous law!
While perusing the C.F.I.F., Center for Individual Freedom's website, I stopped to visit the "Jester's Courtroom". Where, much to my surprise, I found a reference to a May 2008 criminal complaint filed against a Houma, Louisiana barber for cutting hair on a Monday.
(You've just gotta' read this.) http://www.houmatoday.com/article/20080521/ARTICLES/805210332/0/SPORTS
Yup, you read that right! A barber has been cited for openning his barber shop on a Monday to cut the hair of some young men who were scheduled to attend their High School Graduation ceremony that night! And, the worst part is that the Barber, Clyde Scott, is facing up to a $500 fine!
"Scott said he is consulting a lawyer about the ticket, which could result in a fine of up to $500."
"The law is likely a vestige of "strong-arm union tactics" employed in the 1950s and 1960s by the Louisiana State Association of Barbers, Cosmetologists and Allied Industries, Adams said."
"The union formerly set hours and prices and picketed barbers who wouldn’t get with the program."
Here is the link to CFIF -- a very interesting source:
http://www.cfif.org/htdocs/legal_issues/legal_updates/jesters_courtroom/tales.html
So... what say you about Clyde Scott's 'run-in with the law'?

Looks like someone forgot to pay the "Legitimate Businessman's Protection Fee".
Seriously though, he should sue the city over this. That type of practice is completely illegal. the sergeant who ordered the ticket written should be demoted to janitorial work at the police station. In this country we have a right to work any day and at any time we please.

Hello Taskr,
I only wish that we, in the USA, had the right to work whenever we so choose. Hubby is a Union member, and heaven forbid he violate the current contract outlining the hours of the job. Moreover, if he were to get caught doing 'side work', the penalties can be quite severe!
I'm completely on board with the Sergeant being re-assigned to janitorial duty. But wait, then the Police Union and the Municipal Workers Union would go to war over it! Oops!

Good point Ladyluna. I know unions can be terrible. Florida is a right to work state, so even if unions strike, workers have the right to continue doing their job. Doing that of course will likely get them blacklisted by the union, such as with the SAG strike, but I guess that's the way these things are. Especially since this law was started by a union.

Good grief, I'm tired of business groups of all kinds using the law to promote their businesses. From chemical companies to barbers! They all get the lawmakers in their pocket to pass laws short circuting the competition provided by the free market that keeps prices down for consumers. Wake up people and don't alow this to happen anymore.

Free enterprise, the market place, and competition regulate prices better and more fairly than anything else ever divised. At one time it was the job of government to insure these 3 things existed. Then price regulation took care of itself.

Hello Red,
Pretty insane, huh?
Yours is a warning that I hope is heard around the world! You're absolutely right that this represent(ed) an effort to abolish competition. This is what initially noble union efforts have disintegrated to. Pathetic, isn't it?

it is ridiculous... i never heard of such law before that you will get fined for cutting someone's hair... the barber is only doing the job and i don't see what's wrong with it... i don't understand why such a law is being created at the first place... i pity the barber... i think the cost of hiring a lawyer will be more than $500... take care and have a nice day...

I can't believe that in this day and age that a barber would get a ticket for cutting hair on a Monday. I do know that when I was growing up the barbers were all closed on Monday and Sundays. This is just bizarre. Since the surrounding store had no problem with his being open and the young people hanging out there someone had it in for him. This is one of those It is a law left over from the past that needs to be changed. Some people just have nothing better to do than stir up trouble. I hope he gets off with it then goes to work to change the law. That is as bad as the Sunday blue laws here in South Carlina. In certain counties. store can't sell any thing but groceries until after 1:30 on Sundays. I guess they thought it would make people go to church if they couldn't shop until then.

Hello Deebomb,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this.
Yes, I definitely agree that this is downright silly! I have not had the opportunity to follow up, to learn if the barber had his day in court, and any possible outcome, but this is truly ridiculous.

DeeBomb, maybe that law is set up so that people wouldn't show up in church drunk!

I remember reading that a few months back.
This is just another one of those insane outdated laws that someone with nothing better to do tries to enforce every so often.
The guy that wrote the citation should be fired.

This is absolutely ridiculous, I support the barber's action by hiring a lawyer appeal against the ticket.

Well hey there, Titaniumsoul,
How are you??? Let me apologize, I have been remiss in spreading out my time on MyLot of late. With the election just a few months away, politics has definitely taken up the lion's share of the little bit of time that I can dedicate here. So, let me sinerely thank you for stopping by to visit!
Ya' know, ridiculous is a perfect adjective for this nonsense. I also support the barbers efforts to vigorously fight the citation.
Thanks again for stopping by, Titaniumsoul!

How about there is a union for Barbers, Cosmetologists and Allied Industries whatever that is. I guess there is a union for everyone. I do wonder why the barber could not just turn right around and sue the union. The Louisiana State Association of Barbers, Cosmetologists and Allied Industries crealy cost Clyde Scoot 500 dollars. If it had not been for them Clyde Scott could have been allowed to cut hair at anytime or anyday. Is it illegal in Louisiana to cut hair at your house, or do you have to do it at a barber shop. If it is not illegal to do it at your house then the state of Louisiana has no ground in prosecuting mister Clyde Scott. I wish that some lawyer would be willing to take up mister Scotts case to the Louisiana Sumpere Court. I do believe that he would have a case against the state to get this law overturned.

Hello Gewcew,
I do not know if it is illegal in Louisiana to cut hair in one's home. I imagine that one would be required to pay for a permit, and be zoned accordingly. Though, that's a great question!
I share your enthusiasm for Mr. Scott efforting himself to see that the law is overturned. Though, who wants to take on that kind of a hassle? Isn't that the primary argument against such righteous activism? I wish Mr. Scott the best, when he has his day in court.

Yes there are still some very ridiculous laws out there. Some are very old and were never revised, some were created for the convenience of certain groups which I don't really agree with.
I can glimpse at the reasoning for it without agreeing, of course, but lifestyles are different now and maybe things should be different as well.

That one certainly rides high on the list of stupid laws and I hope that barber makes a big stink and wins. Laws are supposed to serve the people, and as you suggest, that one seems designed only to enrich a few at the expense of the many.
Furthermore, strong-arm tactics like that should only result in more and more people getting sufficiently fed up to check out the technology offered by a brilliant escapee from Communist Romania who came to the US in 1977 and founded the Robocut Company in 1984. Now he is making them in red! I have been using it for over ten years. Before that I used Flowbee, but the Robocut is way better:

Hah! Mine is white; if it ever breaks I guess I'll get a red one!

No wonder I always see barber shops and salons closed on Mondays...I really had no idea there was a law against it.
