Boy with long hair banned from kindergarten. |
|
http://www.chron.com/disp... http://www.cnn.com/video/... I was kind of shocked by this story, this 5 year old is supposed to start school in the fall, but the school board won't let him attend because he has long hair. Apparently their dress code says boys hair has to be above the collar. This little boy is a native American, and they believe a man's hair shouldn't be cut. I don't know exactly where Needville is, but, I think they're being unreasonable. Should he be allowed in school?

1. NuclearRabbit (276) | 1 month ago | They could put him in a better school, one that doesn't believe in turning people into little carbon copies of each other. Schools are too nuts about little unimportant crap.

2. Transdisc (13870) | 1 month ago | I agree with you, bonbon. I think that the school is being unreasonable. Even if it wasn't for religious reasons, the boy has a right to wear his hair long. People may disagree with hair length, but it's still a person's right, and it's not a private school. I know that educators have a lot of crap to deal with these days -- tons of crap --but I also think that schools have been given too much power in some ways and it's simply frightening.

bonbon664 (2120) | 1 month ago | Did you watch the CNN video? The guys applauding for it the loudest are old white guys who obviously don't have kids in the school system, they just revel in the "Leave it to Beaver" ideal of their little town where everyone is exactly the same.

NuclearRabbit (276) | 1 month ago | I don't know though, IF I had a kid and a school told me that they didn't want him there because of HIS HAIR, I wouldn't want them teaching him.

Transdisc (13870) | 1 month ago | Good point, NuclearRabbit. I didn't watch the video, bonbon. I only read the other link. Now I'm really frightened to watch the video.

bonbon664 (2120) | 1 month ago | Trust me, you'll be amused by the video, especially when one woman stands up and says, "People may think we're backward".....yah think??!!

Transdisc (13870) | 1 month ago | Well, I took your advice and found the video very revealing. For one, I see why they live in a place called 'Needville.' They need a life. I must say that after watching the video I am of the opinion that they hair rule has its roots in racism or some other -ism.

Transdisc (13870) | 1 month ago | I also thought that the little boy was adorable and I hope that he is harmed in some way through this experience.

NuclearRabbit (276) | 1 month ago | Trans, don't you just wish they had an edit button somewhere?????
| |
|
|
Transdisc (13870) | 1 month ago | That would be a nice feature, although some would argue that the 'edit' button serves that function.

3. ayumitakashi (2025) | 1 month ago | I think it's really stupid that something like this is happening. It is unreasonable what this school is doing. I think that sometimes schools take it too far when it comes to uniforms and things like that. They seriously need to think about the consequences in situations like these. These people are different and do things that are different from us. They should not have to change themselves or change what they believe in. I do hope that he is able to go to school.

5. pyewacket (8065) | 1 month ago | This really irks me no end. Don't these jerks realize that long hair is a tradition amongst Native American people? When my mother used to work at a chiropractors, one of the clients was a Native American....he also happened to be a corrections officer and he got the same flack...he had to cut his hair (which was very long) or else..he took the issue to court...and guess what? He won...the only stipulation was that he had to tie his hair back in a ponytail...so why can't they allow this boy to do the same? After all these centuries sounds like the "white man" is still trying to make Native Americans "white"

6. Bd200789 (1342) | 1 month ago | That is horrible! They are going against the First Amendment. They can't ban him from going to school because of his hair if that is part of his culture or religion.

7. bmorehouse1 (359) | 1 month ago | Are you serious? Thats just plain ridiculous! Aren't there better things to be worrying about - like maybe giving the kid an education?! They should honor the Native American tradition. Afterall the Native Americans were here before we were!

bonbon664 (2120) | 1 month ago | I think they do everything else that's considered "American" whatever that is. I think they're pretty assimilated, it's not like they're new immagrants or something. In fact, they were the first Americans.

9. coffeebreak (2466) | 1 month ago | There is probably some law they could use to defend themselves, but no matter what happenes, if the little boy goes to this school, he'll always be treated badly. Sorry, that is the way it is these days. And the thing is...at least in the area of SO CA I live - schools need to stop and think about the teachers appearance - the schools allow them to dress like they just crawled out of a rag bag! I'm telling you, I walk my grand daughter into school every other week and am just appalled at what I see teachers wearing. They are the adults, the ones the kids are taught to respect and admire and they look like that? When I was in school they dresed in skirts and dress shoes and men in slacks and ties, okay so that might be a bit overboard for the style these days, but flip flops (and the kids are not allowed to wear them) and shorts and tank tops (kids are not allowed to wear them) and literally just junk looking crap. Capris and t-shirts, and there is one man teacher and he looks like we just walked out of the "little critter" story books! Where is their personal esteem? Where is their personal values? Yet ALL of them walk in their junky, sloppy attire with a huge cup of coffee in their hands (the kids aren't allowed to have anything to drink in their possession) Guess I got off topic, Sore subject with me!

10. twallace (2141) | 1 month ago | That is wrong for them to do something like that. I know that the young man really feels out of place because of this. They could over look it for him. Something like this is not a dress code policy. This is saying your kind can't be in this school. Now I read the article and when it comes to religious reason, they can't make the boy cut his hair. That would be wrong of the board and it would make them look bad. They have to allow the boy to go to school for that reason alone. If nothing else, so they can't do that to him.
