Have you ever undergo an operation in your life?

I've been under general anaesthetic 3 times so far but didnt notice any effect on my memory. I think most peoples memory function deteriorates with age but i've not heard of anaesthesia making it worse. I hope it doesn't as I'm expecting to need another op soon!

I have never heard of anything like that as far as anaesthesia goes. However I do know that in the aging process the human memory does tend to get a little wonky and forgets things more often than it used to! But there's things you can do to "excersize" your brain to help it out! Like playing memory games on a nintendo DS, or doing crossword puzzles and word finds and things like that help the memory.

Wow! been tough huh! I have not experienced any major operation...(knock the wood)LOL!
Anyway, I do know if that is really the effect since I am very forgetful too..Sometimes I am just looking my comb and only to find out it is just on top of my head! LOL! I have been having anaesthesia several times for my teeth..Maybe it is..LOL!

I Just has surgery this year for cancer,it was a cancer operation and I came out of it just fine, I was in the hospital for four days, I was suppose to be in there just over night, I started running a fever and they kept me.

it happened ten years ago, it was a major operation since i'm having cancer in my gland, but thank God that i've been healed till today, about ur problem, i think i had it too, but in a different way, i just felt that my body get tired easily, some peoples said that it's the effect from having major operation, our body won't be as strong as before, don't whether it's true or not, but i do feel my body is weaker that before, but as long as i keep the healthy life style i think i can overcome it

I have never heard that. I had surgery in Oct and I don't think I've had any long term affects from the anaesthesia. I know that as people age, their memory is not as good as it once was.

I had a c-section and I dont think it did anything to my memory, but that is the only surgery I had other then when I was 5 and almost died. So I dont remember much as I was so young. I wonder if there is any scientific proof?

anesthesia does cause memory loss/block
but, only for the surgical procedure itself.

anesthesia provides a two-fold job. one is blocking pain. one is
short-term memory loss so that if you would not remember "hearing" or
"feeling" (not pain) at the time of surgery.

many people in orthopedic surgery "feel" and "hear" the necessary banging of the no-bounce hammer to affix the hip. that memory is short lived.

it may be a reaction to the synthroid you are now taking because of your thyroid removal. i would check with your family doctor.

If thats true, then it explains my forgetfulness, I'm very forgetful..to the point where its costing me money..lol. I've had two major surgeries in my life, I've had two open heart surgeries, I've never heard of anesthesia messing with your memory, but if so, I have an excuse now for being forgetful, anytime my husband says anything, thats what I'll tell him...lol. have a good day

I had major surgery when I was nine years old. I would say my memory is pretty good. It is probably better than average for most things. I dont think I had any lasting effects of anesthia and actually I never heard that before. i hope you are ok now. Maybe you are just becoming forgetful because you have alot on your mind.
