If you're a Christian, do you feel bad for not reading the Bible? |
|
Some people say it's allegorical, others say it's just a collection of fairy tales, some people don't believe in every word that the Bible states, while others say it's the most boring book ever - with no pictures and has some unusual words and grammatical forms that are completely unacceptable in their part.
I'm a believer (you can call me Christian if you want) but I'm not sure if the things mentioned above are true. Although I agree that the Bible has no pictures and I also think that some parts in the Bible are allegorical due to different interpretations made through the years.
But there's one thing I won't agree about - that the Bible is the most boring book ever.
For me, it's not boring at all; I'm loving every chapter of it. Now I'm not promoting the Bible to you (whether you're a believer or an atheist) but I think it's one of the greatest book ever written. It's an everlasting source of love, hope, and courage.
The book itself is considered, specifically for Christians, as the greatest remembrance of God for men. However, I know that a lot of Christians out there are not paying special attention to this book. Some may have read it but only half-finished, and some won't even bother reading the rest of the Old Testament or the New Testament. They prefer to spend time reading and collecting Harry Potter books, various kinds of magazines, tutorials on how-to-draw anime, etc.
Now, the question is... WHY? If you're a Christian, do you feel sorry for not reading the Bible?

12. 2minicoopers (116) | 1 year ago | I try my best to read the bible every day, usually before I go to bed at night or if I wake up in time in the morning before the kids get up. I don't feel Guilty for not reading if I can't, but I do notice a difference in my day. When I start my day off with God it tends to go better and stay on track...when I don't it's a tougher day.

13. book1962 (14554) | 1 year ago | hi ronreyes I dont really feel sorry for not reading the Bible. Normally I am an avid reader and when book is thicker it wont scare me. However when I got into contact with evangelical folks in my teens I bought myself a Bible when I was 18 and started reading it the way they do. Unfortunately I never ever felt that this was interesting. I was and 30 years later still am questioning what that has to do with my everyday life and I can only say, nada, zero, zilch. I stopped reading the Bible long ago as it seemed a task and chore for me and I think in my work life and private circumstances I am having more than enough chores and tasks and I dont need another one.

15. mibngold (1525) | 1 year ago | No, I do not feel bad about not reading the bible & I get really annoyed with people who try to shove it down my throat. Just like I don't feel bad about not going to church, I think I can have my own beliefs without having to sit in a church with a bunch of people that I don't know and listen to someone preach to me.
| |
| |
|
|
ronreyes (609) | 1 year ago | And what are your beliefs?

mibngold (1525) | 1 year ago | It would be a lot easier for me to tell you if I actually knew for sure! Trust me, I'm not holding anything back from you, I just have a lot of questions that can't seem to be answered! Like, as much as I want to believe that there is a god, I also would like to know why I have to live in pain every day of my life. And why I have had to go through some of the horrors that I have gone through! It just seems to me that I was never meant for happiness and my life was meant to be so damn hard...and I want to know why! I don't hurt people, as a matter of fact, I go out of my way to help people. I am nice to everyone..I am just an all around good person & yet, life hands me sh1t, constantly! Even my friends are always saying, "It could only happen to you" because if something is going to go wrong, it goes wrong! Nothing ever goes right! Does any of this make any sense to you? And does it answer your question?

|
|
ronreyes (609) | 1 year ago | Two words - That's life! You said that you're a good person. I think that's enough reason for you to be happy. People may not appreciate that sometimes but what's important is that you know you've done a good thing for them.
I've heard a lot of stories regarding this matter. There was this man who told his story in our church. Although he had a cruel past and a cruel family (his parents prefer him to sell rags than for him to go to school), but he still remain as a good and loving kid. He never complains about it. As he grew up, he learned a lot about dealing with business. He started selling more things such as slippers. He managed to save money and eventually used it to grow his business (selling more kinds of stuff) and for him to attend school at the same time. He said that he graduated from college at the age of 32.
Right now, he's one of the most successful and richest businessman in our place. His parents were very sorry on how they have treated him. But since he's a very loving person, he managed to forgive them easily. Everyone in the church gave him a standing ovation afterwards.
In your case, whatever you may believe in, just keep doing what you think is right. In the end, if you found out that God does exist, them I'm sure He will be proud of you and will give you the reward you truly deserve.

16. eyewitness (1143) | 1 year ago | I do feel sorry when i don't read the Bible.I always have an excuse not to read, which is not good. The bible is such a beautiful book.If people look at the fact that the bible is a romantic book, scientific, pshycological and so much more. Every genre in this world is written in one book the Bible.Scienticians are using the bible for scientific researches and some have even confirmed that God excist.I have difficulties in reading because of concentration problems so i bought a calendar which has for every day of the year a verse from the bible. So i can look it up in the bible and still read the bible for maybe 5 minutes or longer. I'm glad God gave us the bible because it gives so much love and support but it's also confronting, which is good so we can learn from situations in life. Though i do think not everything in the bible is translated well in the past but i do know God gave us this book as a guidance for our lives.Live as much your life in the way God wants us to and you will have a blessed life.
Thanks for bringing this up.

17. 1hopefulman (1348) | 1 year ago | I try (yes, I try, but not always successful) to read a bit of it daily. The Bible is the world's best seller so it is only logical that everyone should read it at least once in their lifetime, no matter what conclusion they reach in the end.

Here is something all may find interesting. The sixteenth president of the USA, Abraham Lincoln, never joined any church, yet he was a Bible reader. He made this statement: “I believe the Bible is the best gift God has ever given to man."
| |
|
|
ronreyes (609) | 1 year ago | That sounds very interesting! I searched Abraham Lincoln in Wikipedia and learned more things regarding his view on religion. I think it's pretty interesting. http://en.wikipedia.org/w... the end, "These scholars maintain that Lincoln was a man of deep faith."

ronreyes (609) | 1 year ago | It is! It's nice to know that these political figures such as Lincoln may not be religious at all but they know how to manage their faith in God.

18. Arkie69 (1098) | 1 year ago | I have to admit I have never read all the old Bible and probably never will. However I spend a lot of time in the New Testament. I see the New Testament as the information we need for today's world. I know there is a lot of good information in the Old Bible but I see it more or less as a history book. I do know this. There has been enough changes in God's plan in the old Bible to confuse a person if they try to mix the Old Bible and the New Testament.
I do not agree with the way most people try to use the Bible in the churches. The Bible is not man's teaching tool. It is God's teaching tool and much too often man just tries to use it to back up his opinion or his lifestyle. God Very often uses the Bible to back up some of the things He shows us. Or to explain something we are seeing or hearing.
I use the standard King James version of the Bible. I just figure it has been messed with less by man than some of the others. I don't find it hard to read at all because of the different words used when it was written. Even with it I have compared bibles from different publishers and find slight differences. I have only found one that was important enough to be concerned about. Some red letter is left out of some Bibles and people very often think it is God speaking when it is actually Jesus doing the speaking. That's the reason for the red letter addition of the Bible. Both God and Jesus spoke to different people in the New Testament and we need to know exactly who it is speaking. The 10th chapter of Acts is a good example. Both God and Jesus spoke to Peter. This little fact proves we are dealing with two different Holy Spirits today. In that scripture Jesus was doing the teaching and God was doing the guiding.
There is another thing I handle a little different about the Bible than most people do. Most people love Paul's writings and believe every word he wrote. I don't. Even the best of men that do as much talking as Paul did in the New Testament cannot help but make honest mistakes. This is what the death of Jesus accomplished. It gave God a tool He could use to teach mankind that doesn't make mistakes. The Bible calls it the Holy Ghost. At this point in time God does not use man as a Christian teacher the way man is doing it. This type of teaching ended with the death of the Apostles. Man is supposed to be teaching his kids to reach a point where God can Anoint them with the Holy Ghost. When that happens God personally takes charge of their teaching and man's teaching job with them is finished. One of the reasons for the Holy Ghost is to remove man from between God and man. All this is in the bible if you can read it with God's help to understand it. You won't find it though unless the Holy Ghost is assisting you as you read it.

19. dragon54u (9527) | 1 year ago | I've read a lot of the Bible but not the whole thing, probably not even half. I know the ten commandments and have read a lot of the New Testament and consider myself well versed in what God wants me to do and how to live my live in a constructive manner.
So much of what the Bible contains was made for people that had no understanding of science or the world outside their little villages. While this doesn't make the messages null, it does set the stage for misunderstandings when we read it today.
I would like to read the whole book, and probably will in the next year, but people need to realize that the audience it was written for was nothing like us and many of the situations it describes would be changed now. For instance, no loving parent (like God) send his or her child to a lake of fire for eternity.

ronreyes (609) | 1 year ago | We'll know it when we die. That's the nice thing about death.

|
| ConfusedW (17) | 1 year ago | Dragon54u, I agree with you! NO loving parent sends his child to a lake of fire for ANY duration of time. The first question I ask anyone who tells me that is, Where can I find that teaching in the Bible? I have still not met anyone who can find it in the Bible. If that was part of God's plan for man, would he not tell us in the Bible? Even a judge would not send a criminal to prison without first telling him, or her, what the outcome of the trial was. Humans are certainly not more righteous than God. After reading for myself in the Bible, such scriptures as Psalms 30:5, and Revelation 20:13,14, among many others, and reasoning on these scriptures, I am convinced that the teaching, of a literal place of fire where wicked persons will be tormented, is false. I believe to the contrary, what is stated at Psalms 37:9,20,34. To me, it is much more in line with the personality of God, as described in the Bile
