If you're a Christian, do you feel bad for not reading the Bible? |
|
Some people say it's allegorical, others say it's just a collection of fairy tales, some people don't believe in every word that the Bible states, while others say it's the most boring book ever - with no pictures and has some unusual words and grammatical forms that are completely unacceptable in their part.
I'm a believer (you can call me Christian if you want) but I'm not sure if the things mentioned above are true. Although I agree that the Bible has no pictures and I also think that some parts in the Bible are allegorical due to different interpretations made through the years.
But there's one thing I won't agree about - that the Bible is the most boring book ever.
For me, it's not boring at all; I'm loving every chapter of it. Now I'm not promoting the Bible to you (whether you're a believer or an atheist) but I think it's one of the greatest book ever written. It's an everlasting source of love, hope, and courage.
The book itself is considered, specifically for Christians, as the greatest remembrance of God for men. However, I know that a lot of Christians out there are not paying special attention to this book. Some may have read it but only half-finished, and some won't even bother reading the rest of the Old Testament or the New Testament. They prefer to spend time reading and collecting Harry Potter books, various kinds of magazines, tutorials on how-to-draw anime, etc.
Now, the question is... WHY? If you're a Christian, do you feel sorry for not reading the Bible?

51. suspenseful (17069) | 1 year ago | Well since I am a Christian, I would feel bad if I forgot to read the Bible. I have Esword on the computer and I read a chapter in the morning and one in the evening. One time it got so late that I closed the computer down before reading it. So I turned the computer back on just to read the chapter. I believe the Bible is the true word of God. And it is not boring, it is very exciting hearing the word of God from creation through past the end of time.

53. mjmlagat (1980) | 1 year ago | I neither ignore nor underestimate the the great teachings of God through His words on the Bible but honestly speaking, I feel so guilty that I didn't give much time of my life reading it that I missed lots of opportunities to be a better person than I was before. But I know God never closes a door to us men and I believe it's not yet too late for me, I have been reading the passages of the Bible for years now and I'm so happy and blessed to have such an enlightenment.

54. WhatsHerName (1726) | 1 year ago | I don't believe the Bible was inspired so we should read it over and over from beginning to end. I also don't believe we are supposed to memorise it so we can look more Godly by quoting scripture all the time. It's kind of a personal book yet written for all who chose to believe. I don't physically pick my Bible up so much anymore but I constantly listen to and seek out different scriptures. No anime or Harry Potter for me.
Before I gave my life to Christ it was if it was all in another language. 26 years later I'm still amazed at how much I have learned and still want to know. It's complex for the deep thinkers or more mature Christians, yet at the same time it's simple message of "Love Thy Neighbor as Thy Self" is easy enough for anyone to understand.

| 56. locke49 (57) | 1 year ago | I am a Christian and attend a Catholic high school. We are taught in our religion classes that "All of the Bible is true, and some of it actually happened." We are told that the Bible contains religious truth and only some historical truth. The Bible needs to be interpreted so that we can understand what message the scripture writers are trying to convey. This makes sense to me - the Bible is not a text book full of facts and therefore should not be read like one. I don't feel bad for not reading the Bible - I only feel bad for not making the effort to understand its meaning.

57. positiveminded1977 (4517) | 1 year ago | Is this only for Christians, Ron?? You are one of my Mylot friends, so all your discussion come to my inbox, and I can't resist any discussion on religion.;)
The Bible is not everybody's cup of tea, Ron. Not everybody feels refreshed and inspired by it. The Bible sure did not inspire me. When I reached the end of Judges, I was so upset that I quit reading it. I still haven't got the guts to pick it and start reading it again where I stopped, that is, the end of Judges. So, I can say, half of the Bible was enough to drive me away from Christianity. However, I do respect those who say they feel inspired by it, though I don't understand how. The only thing I understand is this: What inspires one upsets the other. This is life.:)
Cheers and happy mylotting

ronreyes (609) | 1 year ago | I think that's why God gave the Ten Commandments to Moses - it's because of the wicked acts of mankind.

positiveminded1977 (4517) | 1 year ago | This is another thing they never discuss in Sunday school and don't even mention in sermons. Of course, they talk about ten commandments, but nothing about what happens immediately after Moses received them from God. Here is what happened:
1. Moses comes down from the mountain holding the stone tablets in his hands. They are holy because God himself has written the commandments on them. When he reaches the base of the mountain, he sees his tribesmen dancing around a golden calf and having a gala time. He gets so angry that he throws the tablets and breaks them to pieces against the base of the mountain.
Question: Is this the way to treat a holy thing freshly received from God himself? Isn't Moses being just as disrespectful to God as the people dancing around the calf idol? Something as holy as the stone tablets, written in God's own handwriting, and Moses, in a fit of anger destroys them? Why destroy the tablets when they have, in themselves, done not harm? Why destroy them when he knew they were holy, given by God, on which God has himself written?
2. Moses has a conference with Levi and together they kill around 3,000 wrong doers, his own tribesmen!! Note that they KILL, and thus break one of the ten commandments!! And that too hardly a few hours after his chat with God on the mountain!!
Question: Now, when one of the commandments is "DO NOT KILL!" why did Moses kill? Is it ok to kill then?
Strange are the ways of the Bible, but Sunday school teachers never talk about these things.
Cheers!!

| 60. renestl (62) | 1 year ago | Hey Ronreyes,
I consider myself a Christian and yes I do feel bad "sometimes" about reading the bible. I say sometimes because it doesn't really weigh heavy on my mind unless it's Sunday. I don't in any way, shape, or form think that the Bible is boring or a collection of fairy tales. I do believe that the Bible is here for us to find answers and to understand things better. Not everything in the Bible will concern us, especially not in the Old Testament. I do feel that I should read it more: (1) because it needs to be read by me (as I am not trying to push it on anyone else) and (2) because from what I know and have read, there are things in my life that could be better or could have turned out better had I just paid attn to examples given in the Bible. As for interpretations, that is not anything that should stop a person from reading the Bible. Everyone has their own interpretation of everything, so that's not really an excuse. Just because someone said one thing doesn't mean you can't go find out for yourself. To people who don't read the Bible because there are no pictures, that's just weird thinking. Not all books have to have pics to get a point across.
Back on topic, I don't really have a reason for not reading the Bible when I think about it. I during the day, other things seem so much more important than they really are and are taking up time that I could be reading. I've been working on it but I'm not up to where I should be in reading the Bible.
