Bland Recipe

When was the last time you tried a new recipe, but it wasn't as tasty as you expected it to be? Not because you messed up the recipe, just because the recipe itself wasn't all that good. This happened to me tonight. I found a recipe for a sausage stuffed pork roast, which looked fantastic, but the result really isn't all that appealing. I'm really not used to such bland tasting food, and the sausage mixture does nothing to dress up the pork flavor. But I will use this as a learning experience. Next time I make this recipe, I will use an apple glaze to add some flavor.

I don't really use recipes too much. I am a cook by memory or experiment cook. Last week my mother in law asked me to make this pork chop and rice recipe. She said it was delicious and I made it just like hers. I thought it was rather bland and was kind of disappointed. I think it's a matter of personal taste.

I'm the same way. I use recipes to get ideas about a meal, because I get tired of eating the same thing over and over. I really only use the recipe as a guideline and follow my own senses to decide how much of something to add. Most times I will just create my own recipe, especially when it comes to rubs for roasts. My husband hates that because if he really likes one, I haven't a clue how to do it again because I paid no attention to what I put on it, lol.

I have had a few recipes that I have tried not come out tasting nearly as good as it sounded in the cookbook. I think most of the time it could have been better if I had used more spices in it. Sometimes a recipe does not call for enough spices to suit my tastes.

I never follow the recipe's exact orders for spices. I go by look and smell. The problem with this pork roast was all the spices were in the stuffing and not on the pork itself. When you serve the roast the stuffing falls out, so you're left with a bland pork roast with a rather tasty stuffing on the side. I think a glaze is just what this recipe needs.

Thanks for BR! How do you make you apple glaze by the way? It sounds like it would be good on pork.

hi katsmeow1213 when that happened to me with a new recipe I then turned to my herb counter and picked out what would' go with this particular dish, added the need herbs, and a bit of minced garlic, reheated and the dish was just great. It takes a bit of ingenuity and and a dash of faith. Usually pork will take any kind of fruit to pep up its flavor and rosemary is a great herb to add to pork dishes. I am surprised that the sausage didnt add flavor, maybe the sausage needed some herbal help along with some garlic or onion.

The sausage mixture had italion seasonings, garlic, onion, and italian flavored bread crumbs. The sausage mixture was fine, just not the pork part of it.

Most recipes don't have anywhere near enough garlic in them. I've actually seem recipes that call for 1 clove for 6 servings. Hello people that's a joke. At least 3 or 4 or more cloves per serving.

I usually don't follow recipes too closely anymore. I like to tweak things to suit my tastes, so I just take a recipe and adapt away. What I toss in depends on what ingredients I have laying around, too. Sometimes, I don't have a couple of the ingredients anyway, so I need to change the recipe to fit with what I have on hand.

If I find a recipe that I think my family will enjoy, I'll give it a shot. I'll follow the directions to a tee the first time. If they seem to like it but it seems to be lacking flavor or there's something about it that needs improvement, according to our tastes, I'll try it again but this time with some changes and hope for the best. It scares my family when I tell them I'm experimenting. LOL
