Columbus day observed!

No I didn't get the day off. And I don't do anything for it but I'm glad we don't get mail that means no bill's for me. I like it one day off from oh that bill. Your friend onlydia

Since I don't work outside of the home I am off. hahaha I do think our bank is open today, they are a bank open 7 days a week. I celebrate the traditional Columbus Day on the 12th since that is my b-day but as for the celebrated day when places are closed it is just another day here since my husband works on that day. Have fun shopping and I hope you find some great sales. Enjoy your day off.

I do not get ANY days opff. I am my fathers caregiver and thats a 24/7 job. My wife did not get today off either as she is in the food industry. No plans for me but to sit here tending to dads whims etc. Ughhh! Sigh. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I am so glad I saw this discussion. I am multi-tasking while I myLot, trying to get somethings ready to go to the post office. Thanks for saving me a trip to the P.O. Early in my career I worked in the financial world and always got Columbus Day off. But that was ages ago.... I always seem to forget these days. My son still had speech therapy and preschool today as well as Kindermusik this afternoon, so no I don't have the day off. Haha (I have the greatest job in the world!!)

We didn't do anything to celebrate it. My son still had school. I spent most of the day making my toffee orders to ship out the following morning.

I agree with you about the bank employees having a day off and some even had a 3 day weekend. And the post office employees having time off as well. I didn't do anything different than the usual laundry and things at home. I only work part time so am not paid for any holidays. My hours have been cut to one day a week right now but that's fine.

I don't really do anything special for it.Sometimes it falls on the 12th,which was my grandmother's birthday.This year it fell on my son's birthday.He turned 25.I even forgot it was a holiday and my daughter and I started walking to the library and then I suddenly remembered it was closed! OOPS!

Anyway, hubby has no work every Monday due to 10 hours for 4 day work and I really forget about the holiday! hmmm....thanks for posting this and Now I have an idea why we don't have a mailman yesterday! Hi jillhill. Happy Columbus Day to you also. Our banks and post offices are also closed. Hope you have a great day of shopping. I do not do anything special for Columbus Day. I did get the day off because I only see patients on Tuesdays and Thursdays for now, given the recent economic downturn. I used to see enough people to work 3 days a week, now I am down to 2.

I am still yet to figure out WHY we celebrate Columbus day. He didn't DISCOVER anything, because there were already people living here when he got here... And furthermore...the poor bast@rd was LOST when he got here....He thought he was in INDIA for God's sake...that is why he called the Native Americans INDIANS... SO...he got credit for discovering something that someone else had already found, and he had no clue where he was to begin with...yet we still name a holiday after him? Anyway, to answer your question, I don't get the day off. I work in a restaurant, and restaurant workers don't get holidays off, because the restaurant owners all know that the ones of you who DO get the day off are going to be wanting to go out to eat, so they make their employees WORK on holidays so the rest of you don't have to cook. So do us all a favor and stay home and eat a sandwich on holidays...and maybe someday we will be able to have holidays off too if no one goes out to eat and the restaurant owners don't make any money on those days.
