Beware! This site is cloning myLot. Read this or else... |
|
Good News: myLot is an angel. Bad News: myLot has an evil, identical twin brother!
I just found this site called MYLOTANSWERS through the whois record of myLot: http://whois.domaintools.com/mylot.com
Mylotanswers is entirely, completely, and definitely a myLot clone! I don't know about you but I consider this one as a Phishing Site - a site that is designed to clone a legitimate site for the purpose of harvesting or collecting personal information such as usernames and passwords.
See for yourself (click the links below):
This is a link for the ORIGINAL mylot frontpage: http://www.mylot.com
This one is from mylotanswers (FAKE): http://www.mylotanswers.com
When you click the original, you'll probably see the member's frontpage since you're logged-in. But when you sign-out and visit the two domains, you'll notice that they're completely identical. Only the domains aren't the same.
I also tested it in myLot profiles: (You can also try this one with your own profile URL)
Example is my profile page (Original): http://www.mylot.com/ronreyes
And this one is mylotanswers': http://www.mylotanswers.com/ronreyes
Now you'll see a big difference because the one from mylotanswers has a "Page Cannot Be Found" warning.
Something smells fishy huh!?! Well it really fits since it is a phishing site.
And here's an addition to the smell. I also found out that the site called TRYMYLOT http://www.trymylot.com is basically doing the same thing. Personally, I think it's also affiliated with mylotanswers and was developed by the same punk who are trying to hack other people's accounts.
What shall we do now: 1.) Report it to the myLot police. Let's contact myLot and tell the administrators about this phishing activity. They'll be the one who will request this site to be taken down. 2.) Spread the news. Tell the people about this especially the ones that are under your referral (you can forward this discussion to them if you want). They should be aware.
Tips to avoid hacking in myLot: 3.) Strictly myLot. Before logging-in, make sure that you're in the right domain. Look at the address bar of your browser. Make sure that it's mylot.com, NOT mylotanswers.com, trymylot.com, or any other domains. 4.) Type it yourself. It's a good practice that everytime we sign-in to myLot, we should type the real myLot domain (www.mylot.com) by ourselves. As much as possible, avoid clicking a link from other sites or blogs that tells you to log-in using that particular link.
* You can also apply the same tips and process for your Paypal account, Adsense account, E-mail account(s), PTC account(s), Social Networking account(s), etc. This will help us avoid wasting our efforts and hardwork due to the fact that our innocent accounts was hacked by a no-life freak.
Anyway, this is just a friendly reminder. I really think I should post this one for the benefit of all members.

thedogshrink (685) | 1 year ago | The whois database tells who OWNS a domain name. Both mylot.com and mylotanswers.com are shown to be BOTH OWNED by the same one, MYLOT, LLC. That means they are BOTH my lot -- mylot just has different domain names pointing to the same site -- it is common. Mylot probably did that to PREVENT someone setting up fakes. They set up fakes not to phish but to divert mylot's traffic to their site -- like petco.com is a BIG pet store website and if I was starting a little pet store online and I put a name like petsco.com it would be a devious way for me to get the traffic of people who mistype petco.com.
Now, phishing is different:
That would be if you got an email inviting you to go to your paypal account, clicking the link in the email, but the link will show some words like "click here to go to your account to correct this info now". But if you click on it you are not taken to paypal.com, but to maybe something like paypals.com -- just one letter different, like the s on the end. And then if you enter your paypal password or credit card number, they could steal it.
But it is common for websites to own several different domain names for the same site to help get more traffic and to keep others from diverting their traffic.
But this mylotanswers.com is OK. IT is mylot. And I went to godaddy.com to check the whois thru them, and it is the same, so no one hacked that whois website.

39. hildas (2130) | 1 year ago | Thank you for this. You have went out of your way to warn us all on here. This site is legal isnt it? I have just set up my paypal and I am in the middle of completing it. Now I am weary too about this.
I save mylot on my favourites and refresh it everyday. Is this ok and is this safe? I use a website often where I buy a lot of stuff from, a catalogue. I was on it one day and I just knew it was not right when I tried to pay for my order, so I did not.I canceled it. The next day I got an email to say that a clone site had been set up.
I am not really clever with computers and scams and phisling, but I know a site is not right by just the way it opens up and the letters in the web address are usually way too long. Thank you again for this. Keep us informed on the outcome or further news about this.

adihindu (1193) | 1 year ago | Yes hildas, it was a good way to keep them in favourites. So we won't misspell at any time. Moreover it was not at all good to depend entirely on them. We have to cross check the address too. The best example for these sites is to www.alertpay.com and www.aiertpay.com. . These are same when the i was written in capital. But www.aiertpay.com is a phishing site. In mozilla 3.0 and internet explorer 7.0, they made special feature to identify the phishing sites. When we are surfing in these site, the will show a message regarding the security.
So it was all ways good to use updated versions, even they had some backs. Thank you.
