As if Walmart is closed on Xmas Eve...

So I went to Wal mart tonight to find that it was closed before 7pm. As if they are closed. I wonder why they aren't open till 11 at least or say 9 o'clock. I think that's dumb. It's not like I haven't shopped and left everything to the last minute but I did have a few things to pick up, like floor cleaner laundry soap and dog food. All the things I put to the side to make sure I had everything for Christmas.
Did any one else run into this today? What stores were closed around you that you wanted to go to? What things were you going to buy that you couldn't?
We also tried calling a few of the bigger chains for pizza just now and they don't seem to be open. But we tried a locally owned store and they are open until 3pm!!!

So you think that these stores that are open 24/7 all year long and only close on Christmas Eve and Christmas are dumb? Why? Do their employees not deserve to have at least one holiday where they can actually be home spending time with their loved ones? What I think is that everyone who ends up waiting until Christmas Eve to get their Christmas presents when they have all year to be working on it need to start planning better so they aren't stuck on Christmas Eve without being finished with their shopping. Come on. These people work day and night and keep the stores open for all shifts. They don't take other holidays off. But they get this one--Christmas. Or is it that the people who think that they should stay open just don't care.

When Christmas is the only day out of the entire year that the store is closed, I would think people could respect that and make sure that they have everything they need ahead of time. It's not like they didn't know Christmas was coming.

I think stores stay open TO LONG On christmas eve! I mean, those people want to be home with their families too but they have to work. There is so much time before christmas, that most should be able to shop ahead of time and let the store close at 6 on Christmas eve - go home to your families and spend time with them! I think stores should close earlier and let those employees go home like everyone else. IT is after all... Christmas Eve!

You are so very right on that one! I work every Christmas. I do my shopping around my work and it is all done. If I forget something then, I am very grateful to the little convenience store that is open. I refuse to go to a major chain on Christmas eve. I think it is family time and they should be closed. If everyone stopped waiting until the last darn minute for their shopping, it would not be worth it for these stores to be open and the workers could be home with their families where they belong!! Some are forced to work or risk losing their jobs. People should stop making it so darn profitable for these places to stay open at this time. I'm actually impressed that Walmart took a stance and closed its doors.

I went to one of the Wal-Mart Supercenters yesterday (Christmas Eve). This store is normally open 24/7, 365 days a year. So I was shocked to find out that they were closing at 6pm. Fortunately I got there an hour before closing time, so I was able to get all my regular shopping done.
I noticed other businesses were closing early too (some were already closed). The bank I go to closed at 3pm yesterday. Home Depot closed at 5pm. I got there 15 minutes before they closed. Whew! Talk about cutting it close!
The only things I noticed that were open today were gas stations and Jack In The Box (Jack In The Box's drive-thru is always open). That's about it on Christmas Day.

I worked at WalMart back in the mid 90's and they always closed Christmas day. It is the only day of the year that WalMart closes. As far as I know it has always been that way regardless of location. I think it is corporate policy as it is with other stores that are open 24/7 every day but Christmas. It should not be so shocking to anyone. Why should anyone have to work on Christmas? It is bad enough that medical facilities have to stay open so people can be cared for, such as hospitals and nursing homes. Stores shouldn't have to be open for people who didn't plan their shopping well and waited until the last minute. It isn't an emergency.

Really? Walmart has heart for it's employees that also have families? I am a bit surprised really but I think it is great. The workers also have families to be with at this time and shopping to do etc. I work in a store and I always work Christmas. I love the ones that come in and act like they feel so bad for me having to work Christmas. Hmmm....we would not stay open if it were not such a busy day for business for starters. Obviously if they really really cared, they'd plan better and I'd get the day off. I used to really hate it but I've been doing it for years and my family and I have adjusted and rearranged our christmas so to be there for you guys that procrastinate and forget things. I have actually learned to enjoy it. Most people are really nice. Some even bring me in a card or a homemade box of cookies to show that they appreciate me working on the holiday. We shut down at 10pm instead of 11pm. It is announced a week in advance. Still , come 10pm, there are those that will come beating on the door. I am a sucker. I let them in and did not get out of there until after 10:30. For all of you who are fortunate enough to have the holidays off with pay, please be considerate of those of us who do have to work. Check the store hours and be kind. As for Walmart...I am sure they announced their hours early on. It's the holidays...seriously. The workers are people too. You are fortunate that you weren't one of the ones that had to be at a job.

I'm sorry you couldn't get the things you needed -- and I hope your dog will have food until Friday!
But, really, Walmart is always closed on Christmas Eve around 6. Almost all stores, always, for my whole life (I'm 51) have closed early on Christmas Eve and remained closed til the day after Christmas.
Once in a while I'll see a KMart or somewhere open til 8pm, but rarely. Walgreens keeps their 24 hour stores open even on Christmas Day (maybe go there for dog food, so your doggy will not be hungry for Christmas
). That's about it. But it's only the Walgreen's that are normally open 24 hours a day -- the others will be closed.
I'm surprised you didn't know they'd be closed. Live and learn, I guess.

I meant to add, a lot of people have Christmas Even church services, or family gatherings, and many even do the main celebration on Christmas Eve (don't know why but they do) -- so that is why stores, and restaurants, are always closed early. Christmas Eve is considered the start of the actual Christmas celebration.

We do our celebration starting on xmas eve...its tradition. We all gather and have food and drinks and the kids get to open one gift. In the morning we all have breakfast and watch the kids open gifts. I used to work the holiday and show up late on xmas eve. got status now so I get xmas eve off and do not go in to work until christmas afternoon. It's not so bad anymore. I feel bad for those that have to work. I understand gas stations, nursing homes etc. There really isn't a choice. Walmart? come on now. Those workers deserve the night off.

Well we had stores that were open all night until 6 o'clock this morning.
Guess they were counting on having a lot of customers who had to do some last minute shopping. I don't know if the Wal-mart near me was open or not but the fast food places were open and crowded. The only one that closed early (6 PM) was Arby's.
Since I live near Walt Disney World most of the restaurants will be open today as will some malls. They try to make every extra dollar they can so today will be a big day for them.
Wishing you a safe and happy holiday

In Australia (oh well I can only speak about Melbourne) on the 25th nothing works except for petrol stations and few other stores and we get a list in the paper what is open and that works fine with everyone it is anoying if you need something at the last minute but we are used.

keely, Wal-Mart was locked up tighter than a drum around this area as well. Even if you had a dollar you would not have been able to spend it last night. I think they may have been trying to cut the budget by closing on Christmas Eve. My daughter went out looking to buy potatoes for salad and found nothing open. Personally, I didn't have two nickels to rub together so it didn't effect me.

I didn't need anything at any stores today. Besides, I knew that the only businesses that would be open would be the gas stations. I use to work in the grocery store industry, and I knew that stores closed early on Christmas Eve.

hi,
you cannnot blame anyone here...
working late on christmas eve is like hell....
no one will be willing to do that.....
but the shop owners must have some alternatives to keep the people happy...
maybe less staff on that day..or anyone who is not a christian(i hope i am not offending any one)
so this is a tricky problem for everyone...even for a mastermind9just kiddin) like me.......
bye...
merry christmas...

I guess we have come to expect stores to be open now when we want them to be. When I first immigrated to Canada many years ago, nothing was even open on a Sunday and the stores closed for half a day on Wednesday. Even the farmers did not plow the fields on a Sunday. I suppose it is nice to shut everything down and let families celebrate on Christmas Eve, but if you want to do that you should pick your profession very carefully. Hospitals, ambulances, police and some essential service workers have no choice to work otherwise we would not have their services an others like snow plowing and electricity.
I was out with my brother doing some last minute shopping and the grocery stores were super busy in the afternoon, we decided to go for a coffee after and the local Timmies were all closed early at 3 pm, a little early in my opinion. I assume they are all closed today as most retail shuts down.

I tried to go to Walmart tonight and got there around 7 and was surprised that they were closed. Target was as well and all of the stores at mall were closed too. I just wanted to pick up some last minute items. Pajamas etc. Nothing that couldn't wait but last year most of the stores were open until 11pm. We went out to dinner before going to Walmart and most of the restaurants in our area were closed. The one restaurant that was open was jam packed.
