Governor Sanford, the bottom of things..... |
|
So now it's out, The south carolina governor who went "missing" the past week was aparently involved in an afair with a woman in Argentina. Though he has resigned his position of chair on the governors council, he is apparently not resigning as governor and also plans on attempting to reconcile with is spouse. Does anyone see this as being a death blow to his governorship? Should the governor resign over this?

The Governor for a few days lied as to his where he actually was,he has now admitted he was out of the county in the company of another women. As I have said in the other cases I respect the fact the gov did step up to the plate and admitted he had lied and had cheating on his wife. Far as his affair if it near took place in his public office or if he did not use tax payers money to fund his affair in anyway then it is between him and his wife. In my opinion by his choice he has marred his trustworthiness as governor and he should step down NOW!!!

anniepa (9276) | 7 months ago | What's to respect? He didn't "step up to the plate" he was SHOVED up to the plate after being MIA for nearly a week. It's sad that he had an affair to begin with but that should have been a private thing between him and his wife but he MADE it public by the way he handled himself, leaving the country without letting anyone know where he was. Well, for one thing, Annie, he didn't let it get so far out of hand that he got impeached over it! He didn't lie under oath like BJ Clinton did. I guess Rose can respect that part of it.

thegreatdebater (1056) | 7 months ago | Kenny, he didn't "step up to the plate", he left his state with NO leader and no one else with the power to make decisions, he cheated on his wife, and then he tried to sneak back into the country. He also didn't resign, if he did that I would say that he was stepping up to the plate. If he didn't leave his state with no one else in charge than it would only between him and his wife, but this isn't the case. I am surprised that you of all people would be so open to him serving out his term as govenor. If this was a democrate would you be so open?

sassy28 (221) | 7 months ago | Being a SC resident, I feel that he should resign. Not for his affair, but for the way he handled it. He should have left the Lt Govenor in charge, someone should have known about his plans. He could have just told them he was going out of the country to get a break. What happens between him and his wife is there affair, I do not agree with it and feel that it is wrong. It seems to be the normal for politicians to have affairs. If he would have left the state in someones hand and knowledge of his return date, none of this would have happened and noone would have known about his affair.

2. Taskr36 (4645) | 7 months ago | Well it certainly wasn't what I expected. Most politicians do a better job of hiding their affairs. I can't believe he felt the need to abandon his job to do this. That's what it is too, job abandonment. Many jobs would fire an employee for that.
I don't know if it's enough for his constituents to ask for his resignation, but that's their call. I don't know enough about his record to know if they would forigive him or not. I do think this will end any reelection hopes he may have had.

sassy28 (221) | 7 months ago | Lately his record has been the pits to say the least. I made the comment yesterday before all this came out about his affair, that he has dug his political grave. I feel that the state will be asking for his resignation. As far as his run for president in 2012, I think he messed that up when he refused to take the stimulus money from the federal government and had to have a court order him to take it, and that was just a few weeks ago. I think he will have to go back to real estate development.

3. anniepa (9276) | 7 months ago | It's certainly a death blow to his Presidential aspirations, isn't it? Even without the affair the fact that he'd gone "missing" for five days had pretty much taken care of that but now this is really a shocker.
I guess it should be up to the people of South Carolina whether he resigns as governor or not. I wouldn't say he should just over the affair, that's between him and his wife, but the way he handled it, the way he took off for all those days with nobody knowing where he was, that shows a kind of irresponsible behavior that isn't becoming of someone who is supposed to be running a state. There will likely be more things coming to light about this. He's obviously been traveling out of the country to be with this woman so how many trips has he taken and has anyone else been aware of these trips? Annie

From what I understand, and I could be wrong, but his wife has known about the afair for 6 mos. and she knew where he was. Now as for being AWOL from his job ..... that's another story. If I didn't show up for my work for three days and I didn't notify anyone I would just as well be abandoning my job. I'd be fired for it.

sassy28 (221) | 7 months ago | From the news this evening, he has gone to meet her 3 times, but has known her for 8 years. They have been involved for about a year. His wife did not know that he went to Argentina, just that he took off. They did seperate about 2 weeks ago, and were planning on trying to work things out, but after this, she may be reconsidering taking him back.

anniepa (9276) | 7 months ago | Rose, "the people" did NOT call for Clinton's impeachment or resignation! You said yourself you weren't into politics back then so obviously you don't know what went on then. The majority of the American people stood behind their President. That's NOT to say they condoned his infidelity but they certainly didn't think he should be removed from the office in which he was doing a pretty darn good job because of it. Of course there WERE those who were out for blood and ironically among them were the two most recent GOP philanderers, Mark Sanford and John Ensign along with veteran cheaters Newt Gingrich, Larry Craig and Mark Foley.
Sanford most certainly did lie for about a year and his wife supposedly did NOT know he'd gone to Argentina to see his lover. If you want to believe he'd have confessed if he hadn't been caught at the airport and if he hadn't been warned of the emails a South Carolina newspaper had that had been passed between him and his "beloved", be my guest. 4. momiecat (498) | 7 months ago | As far as the question of resigning as governor goes, I think it would depend on the fact that if his personal problems would affect his ability to do his job. I personally do not condone his behavior in the least and I feel it is a joke to expect the wife to just forgive him in an instant and for them to reconcile. Hillary did not do it and I think she was stupid for not divorcing Bill. They have no marriage now. It is just to keep their political careers in the spotlight. Once a man strays, usually he strays again. I say for the wife of the Governor to kick him to the curb!

sassy28 (221) | 7 months ago | They do have 4 sons, and this must be heart breaking to them. Especially for their dad to take off over Father's Day. I have 2 boys and Sunday was a big day for them. Wanting to do everything with dad. This type of situtation is always hard on kids.

5. Latrivia (1579) | 7 months ago | If it were just an affair I wouldn't see why he should resign as governor. Being an adulterous b*stard doesn't necessarily make you a bad politician, nor will it effect your political work. However, just up and leaving without telling anyone where you're going? What if something had happened to him?
I don't know if he should resign or not. I don't know much about this governor, if he's a good governor or not. I do know that if his constituents don't like the disappearing act, they should know better than to re-elect him come the next election.

6. spalladino (9049) | 7 months ago | I believe that he should resign, not necessarily due to the fact that he was having an affair, but because he took direct action to lose his security detail and disappear. In this day and age it's not wise for anyone to do that but it's especially problematic when it's someone who's in a postition of responsibility like a governor of a state. You don't abandon your responsibilities like that and expect to keep your job.

9. lilwonders456 (1930) | 7 months ago | As a south carolinian this is heart breaking. At least to most of us. I know the democrats here are probly dancing in the streets about it. I am extremely disappointed in Gov. Sanford. I do think he will be preasured to resign. This is the bible belt. Add to that the democrats that are still calling for his blood over the stimulus money fight and he will have a lot of preasure put on him to step down. This is the death blow to his political career.

sassy28 (221) | 7 months ago | I heard today that the democrats where having a fund raiser in Charleston this evening. Of course, this was all planned before all this came out. I was talking to someone that will be there, and he said the hop topic will be Sanford. I am curious to see what will come out tomorrow.

lilwonders456 (1930) | 7 months ago | well they tried to get a bill through in the last session of the state house to recall him. But it got stuck in sub-committee. They wanted to recall him over not taking the stimulus "bail out" money. You can bet they are going to jump on this big time and use it to run him out of office. And Sanford can only blame himself. He handed them the reason on a silver platter. He abondoned his state without giving the Lt Gov. the power to take care of things while he was gone. That is what they get him for.

10. thegreatdebater (1056) | 7 months ago | YES he should resign, and YES his office has been tarnished by his actions. This isn't just another polititian having an afair, he left the country with no one else in charge of his state. And, this isn't the first time he has done this. I can't believe that no one is asking for him to resign, his actions put his state in danger, and all of this to be with another women. What a guy!!

|
|
lilwonders456 (1930) | 7 months ago | Well I agree his actions are horrible and he will probly have to step down...lets not blow it out of portion. How exactly were we in danger? He was gone for a few days. Sure he left the country which was stupid but if something major would have come up we do have a Lt. Gov and other elected officials that could have handled things til he got back. The state house is out of session right now and there is really not much going on here in the state right now. The state does not stand still or do the people who live here just because the Gov. goes on vacation.
| |
|
|
anniepa (9276) | 7 months ago | Lil, you're absolutely right that "The state does not stand still or do the people who live here just because the Gov. goes on vacation" but from what I've heard on the news if there had been a disaster in your state only the governor could declare it as such unless he'd given the Lt. Governor the authority or at least could be reached. I think when you add up his hypocrisy because of the way he was one of the most vocal critics of President Clinton during the Monica scandal, the fact that he abandoned his responsibilities and the fact that he apparently took some of his trips to see his lover using taxpayer funds while trying to keep the unemployed from getting stimulus funds all together the sum is the end of his political career. Annie
