Franken May Be the Comedian but the Joke is on Bachmann! |
|
You may have heard that Representative Michelle Bachmann, the two-term congresswoman from Minnesota's Sixth District, has said she will not fully fill out the census form, a misdemeanor punishable by up to $5,000. This isn't really anything new for the fear-mongering conspiracy theorist who had previously called for an investigation into "anti-American activities" of members of Congress and had more recently spoken of Americorps as planning "reeducation camps" for our young people. However, this time she could just be fear-mongering herself out of a job!
http://www.startribune.com/opinion/editorials/49237132.html?page=2&c=y
"The 2010 census will likely determine whether Minnesota loses one of its eight U.S. House seats; population determines seat allocation. Political experts agree that a few thousand people not filling out census forms may be all it takes for the state to lose a congressional advocate in the nation's capital. If Minnesota were to lose a congressional seat, Bachmann's district appears to be candidate for absorption."
Gee, who will get the last laugh if that happens!
For the purpose of discussion, how could the same state that voted for Al Franken also vote for a clown like Michelle Bachmann?

1. irishidid (3023) | 5 months ago | I see nothing wrong with only filling out what is required by law. I don't think it is so much the census itself but who is conducting it this time around. I myself will refuse to answer any questions an Acorn worker asks me. Their honesty is highly questionable. Let's put this into some perspective, we as citizens should not be against each other but stand together to make sure that Obama and the rest of government do the right thing by the people. So far that isn't happening.

anniepa (9161) | 5 months ago | The point I was making is that if even a relatively small number of people from her state do what they think she is telling them to do and refuse to fill out the census it could have a negative effect on her state and on her own job. I agree, we as citizens shouldn't be against each other but Michelle Bachmann is probably the most divisive member of Congress. Annie

2. bobmnu (2640) | 5 months ago | Rep Bachmann has never said not to fill out the Census but that you don't have to fill out the questioner. They are two different items that are being done at the same time. It will be interesting to see what states gain and what states lose population and which gain. Then cross that with the taxes in each state and see if people are moving to avoid taxes.

anniepa (9161) | 5 months ago | I only heard her talk about the census and I wasn't aware there was something separate from the census. anniepa (9161) | 5 months ago | From the article to which I linked:
"Bachmann has been careful to say that she's willing to tell the census how many people live in her household, the basic information that will determine whether Minnesota keeps a congressional seat. But that's a message that's easily lost in her fear-mongering; Beck didn't help when he pantomimed flushing census documents down the toilet."
The thing is, those who would follow any advice of Bachmann's would possibly also be fans of the likes of Beck which would lead me to believe there MIGHT be some who would actually do what Beck suggested and not fill anything out at all.

3. ParaTed2k (4586) | 5 months ago | It is the responsibility of everyone in the US to tell the census bureau how many people live at their residence. There is absolutely no Constitutional mandate to answer any other questions they ask.
There is no Constitutional backing to any law that requires us to answer a bunch of questions that have nothing to do with a count of the people. The only Constitutional purpose of the census is to count heads for Congressional representation.
The census takers are under the obligation to conduct the census in a legal and Constitutional manner. In the 2000 census, the people who came to my door wanted me to lie about where I lived on April 1, 2000. I told them that no one lived at my residence on that date, but they kept re-asking the question in different ways, trying to get my family counted. What good is a census if the census takers don't care what the facts are?

You know, probably if I looked hard enough, I could find a picture of Franken dressed as a clown!
I don't know what to think about the people of Minnesota. It was a tight race so half of them aren't fools. I guess the other half (the fools) who voted for Franken must have thought ...... well, in the words of Stuart Smalley:

8. lilwonders456 (1901) | 5 months ago | it is about privacy and our right to it. THey can use the information about how many people live in the house for the congressional seat. It is not decided by how much you make a year but by how many people are in the area. So as long as people just fill out that part it will not hurt her at all. that is all I plan on filling out. A court has even ruled that you don't have to fill out the whole thing.why? because of privacy rights.

lilwonders456 (1901) | 5 months ago | your right that she is a menance. But I would rather her get voted out than the people of her area loose their representation.
| |
|
|
anniepa (9161) | 5 months ago | The people of her area won't lose representation but they could end up being a part of a different district if the state loses one or more districts which would result in the boundaries being redrawn. That happened in Pa. several years ago when the GOP was in control of Congress and it appeared gerrymandering attempts might have cost my Representative, Paul Kanjorski, his seat depending on how the new districts were drawn. As it turned out, that didn't happen but his district did change a bit. He got some areas he didn't have before and some places that had been in his district were put in another one but it didn't affect my immediate area. Typically the party in power will try to do whatever they can to benefit their majority and take away from the minority. Annie

lilwonders456 (1901) | 5 months ago | a lot of people all over this country are not going to completely fill out the census. Fill it out yes. Just not completely. Some of the information is none of tehir business. Especially with ACORN involved.
| |
|
|
iriscot (733) | 5 months ago | I understand what you are saying. I was a census enumerator for the 1990 census and the 2000 census. We never asked anyone a question that would put them in jeaopardy or be embarissing to them. I only had a couple or three who were reluctant to give me the required information.
As a genealogist, I have researched many census records going back to 1830 just to find information about my ancestors. Important information that helped me find my roots, such as names of spouce, children's names and dates when they were born, and where they were born. In the 1880 census you could even find out whether your ancestor was in the military or not. All of this information is very important to a genealogist. As time goes by future genealogist, be it family genealogist or one who is paid to do research for you will appreciate knowing these important facts.
Census information doesn't become public until 72 years after it is taken, the 2000 census won't become public until 2072, so I don't know what some people are worried about? The 1930 census became public in 2002. I believe the 72 year waiting period was chosen because most people will have passed on by then, at least during the time when that time frame was chosen.

anniepa (9161) | 5 months ago | ACORN's role in the 2010 Census has been greatly exaggerated by Michelle Bachmann and others on the right. Here's a WSJ.com article about it:
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124623459227366517.html
Here's an excerpt from the article linked above:
"Acorn, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, signed up in February with the bureau to be a "2010 Census Partner," which includes, among other things, identifying job candidates, encouraging its members to participate in the count and distributing literature explaining the importance of the census."
The article goes on to say:
"Census Bureau officials said Acorn is one of 40,000 participants in its partners program. Other partners include Target Corp., Goodwill Industries and Telemundo, the Spanish-language TV network. The partnerships, Mr. Buckner said, are meant to promote the count and boost the number of responses among traditionally hard-to-count populations. Mr. Buckner said Acorn represents some hard-to-count communities."

10. xfahctor (5115) | 5 months ago | Title 13, Section 221 (Census, Refusal or neglect to answer questions; false answers) of the United States Code reads:
(a) Whoever, being over eighteen years of age, refuses or willfully neglects, when requested by the Secretary, or by any other authorized officer or employee of the Department of Commerce or bureau or agency thereof acting under the instructions of the Secretary or authorized officer, to answer, to the best of his knowledge, any of the questions on any schedule submitted to him in connection with any census or survey provided for by subchapters I, II, IV, and V of chapter of this title, applying to himself or to the family to which he belongs or is related, or to the farm or farms of which he or his family is the occupant, shall be fined not more than $100. (b) Whoever, when answering questions described in subsection (a) of this section, and under the conditions or circumstances described in such subsection, willfully gives any answer that is false, shall be fined not more than $500. (c) Notwithstanding any other provision of this title, no person shall be compelled to disclose information relative to his religious beliefs or to membership in a religious body.
So we see the fine is 100 to 500, depending on the section violated, but not 5000. But the important issue here is what exactly does the constitution call for in a census?
"Representation and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers ... . The actual Enumeration shall be made within three Years after the first Meeting of the Congress of the United States, and within every subsequent Term of ten Years, in such Manner as they shall by Law direct." -- Article I, Section 2 of the Constitution of the United States It apears the constitution merely calls for a head count and this is the general school of thought among those who study the constitution. As to Mrs. Bachman herself, this "fear-mongering conspiracy theorist" who has "called for an investigation into "anti-American activities" of members of Congress" I have been called a conspiricy theorist myself for some of my beliefs, among which is the belief that many members of congress should be "investigated for anti amreican activities"..., to which I usualy respond, "so then, does that make you a coincidence theorist?" I don't know a huge ammount about Mrs Bachman, but what little I do know, she is one of the few left in congress who seems at all concerned with being part of and maintaining a constitutional government. This alone makes her a pariah among her peers and exponentialy more so among her democratic counter parts. In fact, her main crime among democrats seems to be that she isn't a democrat and an anti-statist. She was about the only one durring some of the hearings on T.A.R.P. abuses to ask the treasury secretary to cite the text in the constitution that gave him the authority to do some of the things he was doing, or for the law being considered that would "retro-tax" benfits paid to executives.....to which he could only stammer and studder. I try to look past the fact that she is a republican, much the same way I do with Rep. Ron Paul, in fact, I wish both of them would just up and leave the party, but there they are. What she is calling for and encouraging is civil disobedience it would seem. Would you have called Martin Luther King or Ghandi a "fear mongering conspiricy theorist" annie? When government goes to far, as it often does these days, I feel it is not only propper, but the reponsability of those with in it to stand against such things. In the beginning of any revolution, the patriot is often ridiculed, looked down upon and in the minority. Such is the lot of the patriot and we accept it with pride. "how could the same state that voted for Al Franken also vote for a clown like Michelle Bachmann" I wonder the same thing myself. How is it a state, that sends a patriot such as Michelle Bachman to congress, or to the governors office like Jessie ventura, could also send a blatent federal boot licking maniac like Al Franken to the senate.
