Working On Healthier Living... | | My Mom is always telling me to take different vitamins for different things. She says they'll help make things run better and make me healthier. The problem is there are so many different ones that I have no idea what most of them do. So for those of you out there that are more up on vitamins and what they do...what are the best ones to be taking? Is there ones for increasing metabulism, energy and circulation? Isn't a all-in-one kind, like one a day, the same thing?
My second question is for those that do regular exercising...what is the best exercise to do for all over fitness that will show results sooner than most. I try to keep up with exercises but if I don't see any results after a couple weeks I get discouraged and quit. Any suggestions?

I exercise also and sometimes I do not see results either but I can sure tell that my body feels better afterwards. I say to stick with and you will see results sooner or later. I am not sure what is good for enrgy though, that is safe for you to take.

On the vitamins, all you really need is a good multi-vitamin. Before you start to take them, I suggest you go see your doctor and tell 'em about your plans to get healthy and then ask his recommendation for vitamins and exercise program. You will be able to get a lot of the nutrients you require in your diet. I am sure the two of you can come up with a great plan together that will be both effective and beneficial.
Good Luck!

| | 5. mamacathie (1509) | 6 months ago | I would much rather eat healthier than take vitamins or supplements and that is what I am trying to do. I have been working on it for the past year. A slow go for sure. In fact I have started an article on healthier living on my blog if you would like to refer to it in my profile. It isn't going very fast but it is going.
As far as exercise, the best I have found for myself is walking. I do not do it as I am supposed to do but it is the best for me. I have a WII and WII FIT and they are wonderful exercise if I will just do it and so much fun!
God bless you!

Fresh fruits and veggies are better and the darker the better. If you need to take vitamins for most people the all purpose multi vitamin is good. If the doctor says you need more vitamin D you can take some extra of that. I've known people who took mega-doses of all sorts of vitamins. Trouble is most of the "extra" is filtered out through the kidneys. Our bodies will only accept so much. As for the exercise - walking is easy and good cardio. Also any core strengthening exercise is good for general like pilates. Of course there are exercises for specific areas too. Maybe check on medical sites like WebMD which has good info on topics.

| | 7. dlr297 (2795) | 6 months ago | If you go to a Health Food store the people that work their will be able to help you pick what you need. I always stay away from the synthetic vitamins, and go with the natural ones. Almost everyone is deficient in Vitamin D. Most multi vitamins use D2 because it is cheaper to produce, and it is basically useless. what our bodies need is vitamin D3 and you can get it seperatley for about 10 dollars for 100 capsules.and that is one thing that is good to take everyday for overall health. The only days that i do not take them are the days that i can get in the sun, and i get my D that way
Salba is another thing that i take everyday. It is a whole food, and it is a good source of fiber. among other things. Just 2 tablespoons added to a glass of water every morning and then again in the evening.
some of the other thins that i supplement with are Magnesium/Potassium, COQ10 and i take a product called glucobiotic supreme because i am diabetic. The multi-vitamin that i take is by Life's Fortune and it also has minerals in it along with the vitamins.

It would take volumes to run through all the ones you need, how much and why. There is a good book out there though if you are really interested in learning about the nutrients your body needs. Earl Mindell just came out with a new version and you can get it at Amazon.com. As far as your other question goes I think walking is a very good exercise. Be sure your posture is good for if it isn't you are wasting your time doing any exercise for you are just hurting yourself. Good breathing is important and walking briskly and then slower for about 30 minutes will give you a good cardio workout. And you should look into some type of weight training. Good luck!

| | 10. cobra1368 (518) | 6 months ago | First of all, rather than stressing about trying to find the right vitamins, have you considered eating right and getting those vitamins in the best way possible...through your food? More veggies, lean meats, fruits. No processed crap, only limited dairy, grains and carbs (I don't eat any bread, pasta, rice, oats, wheat, or milk, cheese, yogurt, etc.). NO SUGAR (except what is found in fruits).
Manufactured vitamins will only do so much for you. Your body is not capable of absorbing all of the nutrients in vitamins, because they are not in the proper form for absorption. So, more salads, less pizza!
On to exercising...you need to give it more than two weeks to start seeing results. Results won't be clearly visible for at least a month, unless you have a lot of weight to lose.
However, I see the quickest results with running for my cardio, combined with weight training. Right now I am doing a DVD called "Get Ripped and Chisled with Jeri Love," and it is killing me! But walking or running a couple of miles every day or every other day, and doing weight training two or three times a week, and NOT GIVING UP, will give you the results you are looking for!
You have to look at it as a lifestyle change, not a "quick fix." Because if you look at it like that, then you will stop as soon as you think you've done enough, then you will be back in the same boat in no time, wanting to lose the weight again. Why not stay on track for life and keep your body in shape? I am just now figuring this out for myself after years of going through bouts of exercising then quitting. Dieting then quitting. It is irritating to have to keep coming back to the starting line.
Now, I just try to make the best choices for myself, I have learned to say "no" to the candy and baked goods that are sometimes brought into work, and I make up my mind to do a particular type of exercise that day, and I stick to it! If I decide later that I don't want to do that particular thing, I will at least go walk the dogs or something, so I can say I did something that day.
I have to admit it is going well so far. I am only a week in, but my jeans are already fitting a little looser, my energy is up, my muscles are sore (in a good way), and I am starting to feel much better about myself.
If you can be strict with yourself for at least a month, you should be over the hump and be able to stick with the plan for an active, healthy lifestyle. Make healthy choices for yourself, but also allow yourself an occasional treat. You don't want to deprive yourself of the things you love. That is counterproductive.
I hope this helps you. I am not a nutritionist, dietician, or personal trainer. This just comes from years of researching this stuff for myself. And these are the conclusions I have reached.
