What do you use to minimize scarring? |
|
My son missed a line drive to the outfield and got hit in the face with a baseball. He was wearing sunglasses at the time. His face was cut by the corner of the glasses. He has a little sideways "V" on his face now.
We didn't take him to the hospital. It wasn't THAT deep and he really didn't want to go. It was a judgement call that I had to make.
It probably would have best to put a butterfly bandage on it immediately, but we didn't.
Right now I am using a product called "Neosporin". It's something that I have always used to put on cuts ever since I was a child.
The commercials claim that it's use will minimize scarring. Do you believe that to be true?
Do you know of any other products or home remedies that are known to minimize scarring?
The only other things that I can think of are Vitamin E and Aloe.
I'm not sure what works best...

1. shia88 (825) | 4 months ago | Hi Miamilady,
I am using MEDERMA product for my scars. I have some scars on my leg due to mosquitoes bites and after applying for few weeks, I can see the result. My scar is getting lighter and I believe if I continue using this cream, at last my scars will go fade. Hope so!!
You can simply get this Mederma scar cream at the pharmacy.
I do hear that AloeVera gel will helps too. But I never try it out myself.
Hope your son's face (the scar) will get fade soon.

3. artistry (684) | 4 months ago | ...Hi miamilady, Hope you son is okay. There are lot of things advertised on tv, but can't remember any of them. But what I do remember is that someone said that Aloe Vera cream is very good for scars. I am a believer in natural remedies, so I suggest, if you have no problem with it, I would visit a health food store and ask what would be the best thing you could use to reduce the scarring. I sure they would have very good information, something without too any chemicals. Hope you are able to obtain a solution. Take care.

4. celticeagle (4925) | 4 months ago | I just use the Neosporin. I used to use Vitamin E, and mink oil. This is what I was told to use when I was pregnant and got those lovely stretch marks. Now i just use the Neosporin and it works as good if not better. And the mink oil was expensive. I don't remember them having Neosporin when I was pregnant. Oh oh. There I go dating myself again. The dinosaurs were always more than happy to run down to the corner and get me some. No fooling.

7. charlies2805 (610) | 4 months ago | Well, it is about health so I really suggest you to go to nearest GP (general practisioner) if you have one, or just simply visit nearest hospital to find out furthermore. YOU HAVE to be very careful when using any kind of medicine, regardless what the brand is, whether it is popular, traditional, well-known or whatever. And it's on the face. I would be very careful with my face.=) I don't want something left on my face.

9. pixeltwistr (373) | 4 months ago | Well heres one that doesnt involve doctors, wont cost you very much and best of all it really works...and its very simple..
Go buy a bottle of vitamin E gel caps....crack the gel caps open and put the gel on the scar...do this every day til the scar is gone or as close to gone as you can get it...it may take several weeks but it does work!

10. highflyingxangel (9033) | 4 months ago | In all honesty, coming from a person that has dealt with abnormal scarring for years and has tried all sorts of products, the only thing that will actually minimize scarring is time. Scars just happen but as long as they are not keloid scars, they will usually fade on their on over time because they lighten. Otherwise, nothing else will work. The fact about Vitamin E is in many people it actually makes scars worse. Google it, you may be surprised.
Secondly, neosporin. I'm not convinced it'll help with scarring simply because I believe they are going with the belief that scarring is caused by infection getting trapped under the skin when wounds heal. Is that the case? Probably not in all cases and the only thing that MAY cause (it hasn't fully be researched and determined yet) is that it could cause raised scarring such as keloids or hypertrophic scars (but those on the otherhand fade on their own).
So, to make sure the scar doesn't get any worse is to make sure he leaves it alone, don't use anything irritating on it and when it starts to heal, make sure he uses sunscreen so the scar doesn't turn a darker color than the rest of his skin.
