The Homeless are not all drunks, druggies, or mental cases. |
This may be abit of a rant but it really hurts me that all people think that all homeless people are either drunks, druggies, or mentally ill. for heavens sake one month I was just another middle class woman living with my adult son in a two br apartment, and two months later because my son lost his job, we ran out of money,we were evicted and homeless. no we were and are not drunks, we do and did never do drugs, and we are not mental cases. we may have been some of your next door neighbors. so why malign a lot of unlucky people who were in the same fix as we were and lump all homeless people as drunk, drugged, looney toons? It is so unfair and unjust. Mylot friends, what is your take on this? I know of course there are mentally ill p eople that are homeless, and drunks, and drug addicts, but there are also many many women and children and men who are simply out of work and were evicted or had their homes foreclosed and thus became homeless.Either they had no family to turn to,or their families did not have any funds either to help them. I even met one young woman with a four month old baby who was homeless. she was not mentally ill, she was not a drunk, and she was very intelligent and scared silly so please do not forget a lot of these people are simply just like your neighbors.

1. dumblnddzzy (10307) | 3 months ago | Rant away Hatley, it burns me up to no end to hear people say ALL homeless are mental cases, or druggies or drunks.. Yes you do have them, BUT you also have everyday ordinary people that have just fallen on hard times.. Heck if it wasn't for my mama, my youngest sister & her 2 boys would be out on the streets & she has a good job working with autistic children. Yet she does NOT make enough to support her & her 2 boys without mama's help. I just talked to mama, & she says NOW Jody has to buy insurance for her & the kids, as the state just dropped her & sammy as she made 4.00 too much in the last month. Believe that crap... i wish mama's house was bigger cause then rex & i would live there too to help out with the bills. As it is i send her money every month out of my disability check just so they will have enough food for the month for all 4 of them.. This economy sucks big time, & mama is 75 yrs old & still taking care of a child, sammy is 9 yrs old, it's got to be hard on her....ok off my soapbox.....lori

Hatley (21910) | 3 months ago | hi thea it is indeed a sad indictment of our country that homeless people fall through the cracks. we have the where withal but not the wishes of all the people but as you said a lot of people are just one paycheck away from being homeless and they do not realize it. we should have been more' careful too but in our case it was his pay never rose as fast 'as our rent did and rents here in Ca are just too high it is'ridiculous.

agv0419 (2407) | 3 months ago | Here in the Philippines many now are homeless because of the last typhoon that hits us recently. Their situation are so pathetic they are no houses to turn to because flood wiped it out. Now that we are still in crisis I think they can't move on easily. All of their properties washed out by the flood and they are depending on relief and shelter in evacuation sites.

3. kitty42 (1165) | 3 months ago | Hello my friend
What a great discussion I have been there myself with my daughter and grandson, we were blessed to find people to help us, we are none of these things you mentioned, I have seen both sides of this, and I never judge people because you never know what they have been through, some people make it obvious they have that could care less attitude but others really need help and we have no right to judge them for their misfortune, I never thought it would happen to me but it did, and we came through it with the help of some wonderful people, its still hard living here in the city is really expensive which is why I need to get back to work, being out of work help us to get to where we are now believe it or not, but we are still a stones throw away from it happening again, I will do my best to make sure it does not happen, people need to not judge others its not right.
Thank you my friend

Hatley (21910) | 3 months ago | hi to both kitty and rose yes a lot of people do not even realize how close to being homeless they are, just a paycheck away and boom if you have no people to help you,we did have friends who tried to help but they were renting too and the landlord was breathing down their neck for putting us up as long as they did. when disaster strikes we sure find out who our real friends are in a hurry and I just want to say bless them.

Hatley (21910) | 3 months ago | hi kitty 42 I sure did stir up a hornet nest with one responder'but I just wanted to let people know that' a lot of people who are homeless are just there because they lost their jobs and ran out of money. so now we need to make enough jobs so people can once more work and live in an apartment and get on with their lives.

4. rosepedal64 (1526) | 3 months ago | Hi Hatley...This is a great discussion. I think that everyone needs to know that the homeless is full of all kinds. No one should be labled until you know them. We have had our share of bad luck as well. I living in a camper right now due to my husband got laid of for many months. Thank goodness that we had this camper or we have been one of the homeless with lables being placed on us. People need to ask questions befor they give someone a lable..Have a great day...

Hatley (21910) | 3 months ago | hi rosepedal and kitty thanks I remember wishing that we had had a camper.but now its not too bad here in Gold Crest better than staying in a homeless shelter and I have made some friends here, and some day hopefully my son and all the others out of work will get jobs again then he can move me back into an apartment with him. meantime I will enjoy the friends I have made here and on mylot too.

5. webeishere (12502) | 3 months ago | My wife works near a church that's a homeless shelter as well. People have to pay to sleep there. There are families that stay there as well as single men and women. She has ghiven meals to some on and off as well as they wait for the shelter to open at night. So I know there are decent people that are homeless due to circumstances beyopnd their total control and there's some that are homeless by choice. Of course I do see the down and out types at street corners at night begging, but theres many families homeless as well here in the Minneapolis area. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB!!~

Hatley (21910) | 3 months ago | hi grandpa bob good for your wife.one baptist church put us 'up for one night, and I saw so many people just like myself, and it just made me want to cry, I dont have much sympathy for'those who insist on living like that, wow it is just so demeaning and its so hard for me to even talk about it to most of the people here, just to my close friend. I will never forget the young woman with a four month old baby, she looked'so scared but at least she did have a car. a lot of them did not have that. well I am safe here and one day things will be better.

6. meapas (1266) | 3 months ago | Hi, Your simple living with high thinking attitude what made me to add you to my friends list.
Let all of us not forget that we all are living a temporary life on this earth. We all have to vacate someday. This is not our permanent home. So does that mean we all are drunkards and druggies?
Let us not bark at a barking dog. This world is a big stage and we come across many types of characters. Let us not lose our cool over such silly group of people who does not know what is like being human. I sincerely hope no such inhumans exist here at mylot.

7. AmbiePam (15457) | 3 months ago | A lot of studies say that 75% of homeless people are mentally ill. They include alcoholics in those 75%. That means there are 25% of people, a large number, who are being stereotyped, and judged through no fault of their own. Twenty-five percent! That is huge! And when one actually takes the time to talk to people who are homeless, or near homeless, it is pretty easy to tell in which percentage people belong to. There is a real need, and unfortunately a lot of people are overlooked due to perceptions. Many years ago I spent some time in a homeless shelter as part of a project for school. It didn't take long to drop some stereotypes.
| |
| |
Hatley (21910) | 3 months ago | hi ambiepam yes I imagine that one could learn a lot 'in a homeless shelter. I saw a young mom whose hubby had walked out on her and her three month old baby and a lady who had lost her job and had her home foreclosed' and she had been working, she looked as lost as I felt' and in the Salvation army hospitality house the guys'out numbered the women and none of them were drunks or on'drugs, as the Salvation Army does not take in drunks or people on drugs, all the men that c ame in new were actually checked for drugs. Anyway I am grateful to be in these surroundings now until we can afford to be in an apartment again.
| |
AmbiePam (15457) | 3 months ago | You're in an assisted living center right? And your son is homeless but looking for a job? The Salvation Army is pretty strict. I heard them saying how they don't take donations from people who won the lottery, because a lot of people they see in their homeless shelters are there because of addictions to things like gambling. They work really hard to help people who can't help themselves.
| |
| afarrell1 (92) | 3 months ago | I think they would still take the donation, just not give the tax credit receipt? I can't imagine any organization which is run on donations and grants turn away the bread and butter.
| |
AmbiePam (15457) | 3 months ago | I know. I'm not sure if it is a regional decision or if it goes for the whole Salvation Army organization. But I was along for the ride with a professor of mine at the time several years ago, and one of the people we met up with worked inside the Salvation Army organization. The lottery was mentioned, and that is when I was told that.
| |
Hatley (21910) | 3 months ago | we were treated very well by the Salvation army p eople and this one negro man seemed bent on helping me,they'really were very kind but strict nobody on drugs is allowed in and they do periodic drug tests, I was grateful for that, who wants to 'be around addicts.

8. dragon54u (9812) | 3 months ago | I'm very glad you brought this up. I was thinking much the same when I asked people what they would do if they found someone living in their attic or basement.
I was homeless a couple of times due to financial disaster. It wasn't pleasant!
Many of the homeless aren't helped because our resources are stretched to the breaking point right now. There are tent cities of homeless people all over the nation! You won't see it in the media, they are ignoring it, but those tent cities are growing at an alarming rate.
No, not all the homeless are impaired. Thank you for educating myLot and perhaps it will inspire someone here to look more kindly on the next homeless person they see.
| |
| |
Hatley (21910) | 3 months ago | hi dragon54u thanks I did think someone should speak for those who were caught in this bad economy like me and my son. a lot of people I met were well educated, and could have worked most anywhere had someone offered them a job. the stigma sure does need to be removed so these people can be given jobs.People who think this economy is not as bad as the last depression need to open their eyes and look around.
| |
dragon54u (9812) | 3 months ago | Many economists are saying we are in a depression but the media ignores them. I truly believe we are in a depression and it will only get worse with the looters we have in DC. I can't buy gold or anything but I'm stocking up on food.
| |
Hatley (21910) | 3 months ago | hi dragon yes it is a depression no matter what they 'say let us see people getting jobs then I will believe that things are getting better until then no.

9. puddytatt (841) | 3 months ago | i hate it when people judge others for being homeless, some people are classed as street pigs (that's what they call them here) but no one knows what circumstances to why they are homeless, i was homeless for about 3 months when i was yonger due to things that happened at home, i just couldn't live there any more so i took to the streets rather than live in hell with that family, i was young, i was scared, i didn't do drugs, i am not mantally ill and i am not a drunk, but people sniffed at me because i begged for money on the street, this was something that was out of my control, and i hated doing it, but i had to in order to survive, i was terrified, i moved from place to place meeting some really nasty people on the way i didn't have a clue what to do until some nice man guided me to a homeless shelter, i had lost alot of weight, i had not had a wash for weeks, i was cold and i was scared and i had no money or no fixed address so i could claim some money from benefits, i needed an address so i could get money but because i didn't, i couldn't get money, but i couldn't go back home, it was like a living hell there, after going to a homeless shelter, they gave me food and gave me a roof over my head, also they found me a job then they found me a home, if it wasn't for them people i could be dead now, it was terrfying out there alone, even to this day when i see homeless people i help them by giving them money or buy them something to eat, i would never sniff my nose at these people because i don't know what their circumstances were before they became homeless, i know what it's like to be homeless but people used to look down at me like i was some kind of druggie or drunk, because of my appearance, so anyone who sniffs at these people are heartless and ignorant, they do not know these people but should think about how they got there in the first place....
| |
| |
Hatley (21910) | 3 months ago | hipuddytatt you sure do know what I was talking about and instead of looking down and just shrugging people off as mentally ill or drunk or drugged they should ask and then help them out if they can. the US could do a lot more if they just would. I love our country but it lets down people who don't deserve to be put down like that.
| |
puddytatt (841) | 3 months ago | hatley it still happens here, i see homeless people all the time, and if i can i will give them something to help them along, it may not be much but i try to help, and i still see people pass them in the street with disgust all over their faces who just walk past and look at them as though a dog has just dropped something unpleasant on the floor, i call them social snobs, they do not know what's happened to the homeless person, but they still judge, these "tofs" need to open their eyes because one day they may end up in that situation one day, you just never know, i know of a guy who had a family, a great job, big house, money, success and now he lives behind a billboard with nothing and no one, i do not know what happened, but even though he's on the streets, he's still a decent person....i hate snobs and i hate the people who look down their noses at the less fortunate, because like i said, it could happen to them one day, things can change a persons life in a heartbeat, just like that guy i know....

10. catdla1 (2768) | 3 months ago | Excellent discussion Hatley! Especially with colder weather coming. If we all did more to help, many of these people would not be homeless. Those who look down their noses and make unkind assumptions really don't realize how easy it is to be in the same situation. And with the speed of technology today, people who have great jobs today just might find their career obsolete in 10 or 15 years...and end up homeless themselves.
| |
| |
Hatley (21910) | 3 months ago | hi catdla1 yes cold weather is coming on and while they open the armories here against that, all that they do is give them a thin mat on the concrete floor and an army blanket, and that did it for my son.,he told me he was going to the social worker for displaced seniors here and find a place for me to stay where I would have a bed,a r oom of my own and be fed every'day. I am retired and have a bad leg so the homeless experience was really hard for me. we had a weeks stay at Salvation Army's hospitality house but every day you had to leave at seven and not come back til four in the afternoon. so that meant a lot of walking for me and it became almost impossible I had a sore on top of one foot, and I am a diabetic. so needed' medical care.so I finally agreed to be parted from my son and he got gov.paid help to live in an apartment with three other men who were also looking for wo rk. well we will make it now.
