The Box... would you push the button?

Hmmm. See, although I do agree that people are obsessed over money, it's because everybody has been bled dry by the government lol. Money itself doesn't make people happy, but the options it helps buy you in life and the security of not having to worry about losing anything gives you peace of mind. $100,000 is not a lot, there was a point in time where you couldn't get a house for less than that. And when you think about a mortgage, that's 30 years. That's a LOT of interest.

Even with a million you'd have to invest and save and still be financially smart - and continue to work. We don't know what the economy is going to do. With children you have to put aside money to help them get started, for college, for your own retirement. With a million, it would be easy to go purchase a new home and customize it and own it, totally, and not have to worry about a mortgage ever again. Also, I would think of my friends and my family, various organizations that would really benefit from some donations, such as schools, food banks, places that help people. It would be a great opportunity.

I think the biggest question for me would be that I would be concerned that either someone I knew would be slated to die - and I wouldn't be able to stop it.... or because*I* pushed the button,*I* would die!

Hehe. I think I would handle that million better than one of the other twerps on the planet who actually happens to have it at their disposal right now. I wouldn't mind if one of the thousands of people who starred in Idiocracy got blown up because I pushed the button, but I'd always have the nagging feeling that there was some sort of rope around my neck too because I got something 'the easy way'... you know, without really earning it. I do tend to have luck, I have won things before, but this is a different sort of situation.

There are an awful lot of remakes coming out - btw I didn't know this was originally part of the Twilight Zone. I haven't seen all of them, although I do like them, the original AND the new ones.

It was from the newer ones. Which aren't all that new anymore! I tend to remember weird things so when I saw the previews for the movie I could see the character from the original twilight zone episode.

See, if I was certain nobody I cared about would have to die, I think I might do it too. I know well enough that I'm always affecting those around me even if I don't think about it in the moment. I feel like a lot of times other people don't consider how what they do affects sometimes LOTS of people.

I did notice you were gone, but I have been seeing you logging on yahoo and you don't answer. I don't know if you're not getting the messages or what. I'm thinking this is mostly a moral dilemma, trying to get to the bottom of what people would do for a buck, where their 'buy off' point is. That makes me seem like a punk, since I have said if I didn't know who it was, I might push the button. I wouldn't want anybody to know that something I did was directly responsible for the death of someone else, even if I never got to know who it was. It would be creepy....

That's another dilemma... you say it's immoral to have someone die because you pushed the button for money. Of course it seems that way in black and white, but I look all around me and everybody is out for themselves. The government 'pushes that button' all the time when they lay off teachers and gripe and moan and cry about money that HAS to go toward providing basic services. That's OUR money going into those programs, so MY thought as a citizen AND consumer is that OUR money should go ENTIRELY to programs that benefit US. OUR money should not be going to benefit any government program or government employees to the point where it cuts us out.

Look at their pensions, vacation, health care, retirement, etc. I don't think they deserve ANY of that on OUR DIME.

Anyway, this is why I raise the question of is it really immoral at all. Then you have another point made by a friend of mine - what if pushing the button simply got rid of an idiot whom we didn't want reproducing anyway? Wouldn't that be a godsend in the long run?

The question is ... we don't know which way this will go. I know the movie itself isn't supposed to be funny, but I did see a funny take on this already.

I'd think about that, certainly, but one of the problems is if you don't have the nerve to do something, other people will. SO... if you just couldn't, someone else would, and it might be 'off with your head'....

Really? I don't like to think about anybody dying, but we're all going to die someday. I think if it were somebody I didn't know, that's as much information as I would want. After that, I wouldn't feel bad if I didn't have any more information.
