MyLot Tasks Scam | | According to a recent Alert, there have been Tasks posted which require a person to send money to the Task owner (I believe with the promise of a payment of double or more the amount paid).
The Alert advises anyone who has been caught by this scam to contact PayPal but it says nothing whatsoever about MyLot's responsibility (or otherwise) as the body allowing the posting of such tasks.
How far do you think that MyLot have a responsibility to monitor and approve all tasks posted? It is certainly possible to report a task as being against the Task Guidelines but how many do this, I wonder? I have noticed that some that I have reported as being very much 'outside the pale' have still been up days later!

owlwings (5116) | 4 weeks ago | I sincerely hope that what occasioned the alert has also made MyLot aware of the responsibility that people ought to expect of them in allowing such tasks to be posted. While I agree that MyLot's actual legal responsibility is (and should be) limited to the payment for the task (in the case of these tasks, I think it was a very small amount like one cent), they have a moral responsibility to see that the tasks posted are bona fide and generally in accord with the Terms and Guidelines of the site. These tasks were very clearly not, I believe.

abbypringles (817) | 4 weeks ago | Well, this is what i was talking about from a discussion that was started days ago. You have to learn how to be suspicious if there are tasks of such scheme as this. this is a tell-tale sign of a scam. members should have been more inquisitive.

| | 2. deathspectacular (772) | 4 weeks ago | I think mylot has a responsibility to take it down if it's against the guidelines.
However, I can't believe that people fall for this stuff. Anybody who can use the internet enought to use mylot has been warned of internet scam artists.

owlwings (5116) | 4 weeks ago | Sadly, the number of discussions that ask whether they should believe that they have won a million dollars or should respond to a bank clerk in Nigeria is enough to make me believe that not a few are still quite wet behind the ears. There is also the great remover of reason called Greed.
I believe that MyLot has a responsibility for what is posted in the Tasks area. I would like to see it more clearly stated, though. Most other similar sites with any status (for example, MTurk) have an approval process, though they do have a 'caveat emptor' clause in their Terms and Conditions.

owlwings (5116) | 4 weeks ago | People certainly make money from spam (including scam, hoax and phishing) emails, Dawn. The victims are usually too embarrassed or confused or ashamed (probably a mixture of all three plus a lack of knowledge of who or where to turn to) to want to make themselves known or we might see a long daily parade of I-Was-Scammed-Anonymous confessions.
I do know that Police departments the world around are active in investigating actual cases of Internet fraud but they rarely recover the often not inconsiderable amounts that people have lost and I'm certain that only a very small fraction of the victims actually consider contacting the Police (though this is what they should do).

| | 3. Gorjess (1063) | 4 weeks ago | Well the people who put the tasks up with the intention of scamming are hardly going to let Mylot know that is the case. Mylot might see an innocent looking task, without knowing the author is planning on scamming. I don't look at the tasks so I don't know what these scam ones would say, but I'm assuming mylot can't tell which will be scams, just like we can't tell.

owlwings (5116) | 4 weeks ago | These particular 'tasks' were, I believe, fairly obviously unreal to anyone with any sense. They said, in effect: "Deposit $1 in my PayPal account and I will give you $2."
It's true that MyLot can't tell if a task setter is going to be honest about approving and paying for tasks but (as in this case) there are some 'tasks' which are quite evidently too good to be true. Just the fact that they were posted at all suggests to me that MyLot don't vet or approve tasks at all (so long as the task setter deposits an amount to cover payment for the task, which in this case, I believe, was a very small amount - the transaction of $1 for a supposed return of $2 was a separate thing).
I'm not saying that MyLot should be responsible for any losses incurred as a result of accepting and doing the task but I do think they need to exercise (or be seen to be exercising) more responsibility for the tasks posted.

| | 4. getbrowser (1431) | 4 weeks ago | Yeah, I have receieved such an alert so far.
At first, I am feeling lucky because I have never done such a task before. Secondly, I think all friends here should say thanks to the staffs of myLot, although they really have the responsibility to monitor and approve all tasks posted. Thirdly, this scam task tells us that you will lose a lot if you try to covet a little.
Good luck! Happy myLotting!

| | 6. jazzsue58 (990) | 4 weeks ago | There is a use for MyLot member tasks (I'm seriously thinking of posting for help on researching for my "real" job) but they must be very carefully scrutinised. Surely there must be a keyword algorithm MyLot can use, so tasks like this are incapable of being posted?
I knew the ptc "tasks" had returned - but I didn't realise they'd become criminal! MyLot have devalued the whole concept of the site, in my opinion. I don't do tasks any more - because how do I know what I'm doing won't end up with me being scammed?

| | 7. thinkingoutloud (2428) | 4 weeks ago | I think myLot has indemnified themselves quite clearly in their Terms of Use Agreement regarding the tasks. It states, among other things, that:
"myLot is not involved in the transactions between Taskers and Workers. As a result, myLot has no control over the quality, safety or legality of the services or the ability of the Workers to provide the services to the Tasker’s satisfaction. myLot is not responsible for the actions of any myLot member. myLot does not conduct any screening or other verification with respect to myLot members, nor do we provide any recommendations."
When they say they aren't responsible for the actions of any myLot member, that clearly means on either side of the tasks, since a person has to be a member to have access to that area. As anywhere else online, we are expected to be responsible for our own actions and decisions.
You ask if people would report guideline violations in the tasks... I know I would. I also realize, though, that I am limited to escalating something for their consideration and I have no impact on their final decision about what stays and what goes... but I do feel I'm doing my part, as they've requested.

| | 8. pweety_princess (1725) | 4 weeks ago | Hello there! I certainly agree with you on that! Mylot is a website and it's nice that they gave us a warning and how to stop this, but they should always help by stopping this situation in the first place. Mylot has to accept tasks before they are publicly viewed, so they should deny those tasks. Actually, I am not sure if they do check the tasks before they get published, cause I've never made a task here, but on other sites that's what they do, cause if they don't, as far as I'm concerned, you might aswell just be writing out a whole lot of junk with stuff that don't even make sense or write out abusive language.
So yes, I think that mylot should check all tasks before they get published, and they should have known it was a scam before they even published it, like seriously, who's gonna double pay you back the money you gave them? No one! They won't even give back the money they need to, you will get nothing!
Another thing that has been brought to my attention is that people are creating tasks and getting people to do there tasks, which of course if fair. However it's not fair when the creator of the task does not accept the task, and just leaves it in pending work, as the work for them was done, and the person that did it for them was not paid. Absolutely not fair. That's why I am careful what tasks I do, I don't do tasks from any member under 200 posts unless I know them, cause they wouldn't cheat and risk there whole mylot account.
