A new fear about Swine Flu |
|
The H1N1 virus has struck a pet cat in a household where the people had the bug...
http://halopets.com/pet-education/pet-articles/swine-flu-in-cats.html
So, if you and your family have H1N1, try to make sure you don't give it to the family pet by practicing safe handling to it.
Happily the cat is alright, but you don't want to be sick yourself and having to take your beloved pet to the vet...

That is good information right there I will keep that in mind when and if one my family members gets it. Which I hope no one does case the H1n1 isn't a fun illness to recieve. 2. hornetlover (2606) | 1 month ago | awww.... that's not good, Elic. But, I am happy to hear that the cat is alright, as well as the family. H1N1 is no joke. I think we call that in our country, foot and mouth disease? but I am not sure.
| |
| |
|
|
ElicBxn (15489) | 1 month ago | no, not foot and mouth - its a flu like the seasonal flu, but of a different and more generalized form - and seems to be striking down younger people, maybe the swine flu shots most of the U.S. got back in 1977 is protecting those of us who are older

3. stephcjh (22850) | 1 month ago | I have heard about this also. I also heard that some dogs have got the H1N1 from chewing on pig ears that you buy from the store also. I am not sure if that is a fact though. We all must stay safe.
| |
| |
|
|
ElicBxn (15489) | 1 month ago | the cooking the pigs ears would kill the virus - besides, the article said pigs, 2 ferrets and a cat - no dogs

4. reeyan (805) | 1 month ago | Hi ElicBxn
It is a great matter of worry the H1N1 virus has struck a pet cat. And if it is so then it will spread in a large scale. So it is the needs of the day that scientist should put their all effort to bring under this flue then to dig water in moon. If it turn into pandemic that it will create a massive disaster in the animal and the human of the earth.
Happy Myloting.

ElicBxn (15489) | 1 month ago | so far in the states its moved from humans to animals, not the other way around
and the plans to find water on the moon started LONG before this flu came around - redirecting the money at this point wouldn't work, its mostly already been spent

reeyan (805) | 1 month ago | Hi
Thank for your comment. And the move that you sited here is a beneficial move for the human and the earth.

5. anne25penn (864) | 1 month ago | From what I remember when the swine flu first hit was that it could not be transmitted to animals. It seems that our "experts" are again wrong. Its good that the cat is okay. Its hard to see a sick pet because unlike humans, they cannot really talk and tell you things like, "my tummy hurts" or that they're thirsty. I guess when someone in the family is sick with swine flu, its better to keep humans and pets at a safe distance.

|
ElicBxn (15489) | 1 month ago | hand washing is as effective a way to keep it from spreading to the pet as it is to a person

Maggiepie (1604) | 1 month ago | Well, while I employ regularly a healthy (no pun meant) skepticism toward "experts'" opinions, let's not jump the gun, here. It's just possible that when they said that, they were correct, but, as microscopic critters have very swift reproduction & therefore swift generational mutations, they may have later mutated & began to be affected.
I totally agree with you that, ultimately, we need to be closely attuned to the messages our pets give us. Their health & behavior must be constantly on our radar, as we know them far better than any vet will in a quick exam at a clinic. While the vet has much knowledge we don't, we have much he or she lacks, too. It's a team effort!
For now, we'd all better keep a close eye on the little non-human loves we think of as family. After all, we wouldn't ignore it if our human relatives began having unusual symptoms, now would we?
The watchword is: CAUTION!
Maggiepie "IMPEACH THE IMPOSTER!"

ElicBxn (15489) | 1 month ago | actually, it developed in the pig population - just as other flues are first spotted in bird or swine populations in parts of Asia. It obviously mutated probably in Mexico - not common, but happens... Viruses are there, all the time in certain populations of animals, but then it mutates, jumps into the human population and is more swiftly spread these days - because of swift transportation. The flu in 1917-18 killed many because of the effects of, among other things - WWI.

10. mentalward (4337) | 1 month ago | This concerns me a bit because I think I have the swine flu right now. Both of my dogs have been sick, one yesterday and one this morning, but they're fine now. However, I do have two cats (only one of which I actually touch; the other is really MEAN!).
I don't know for sure if I have it but I do have the symptoms of H1N1 from what I've read. It's not that bad, at least for me it isn't, but my chest does feel like an elephant is sitting on it and I have a fairly bad congestion in my chest. So, thinking I might have it now concerns me about passing it on to my cats or dogs. I know that I would not like to have to go out right now and take one of my pets to the vet's!
| |
| |
|
|
ElicBxn (15489) | 1 month ago | Sorry to hear you are sick. If your pet has it, it will show the same symptoms, so a vomiting dog or cat who isn't congested probably doesn't have it. Just be sure to keep tissues away from the dogs if they eat them and wash your hands frequently.
