Detergent Amounts

Do you use the amount of detergent recommended by the detergent company? Or are you like me and use less than what's recommended?
I find my clothes are just as clean no matter how much detergent I use. The only thing that makes the differance is spray'n wash.

If they are quite soiled then I decide what is the best route and just add the regular amount or pre-treat the items that are more soiled by hand.

I usually go with my own judgement. If it's a slightly dirty small load, I use about half a cap and if it's a really dirty big load, I use a whole capful. If theres bad stains I pour a little detergent on it, stick it in the washer and let it sit there till I'm ready to do laundry. Since each persons laundry is different I think how much soap is used should be different as well.

That is true I do use a lil more if the wash is quite dirty. But that would mean I'd come close to the recommended amount *LOL*

It depends on what brand I am using. If I get the really cheap stuff at the dollar store then I usually use what is called for. If I am using a name brand soap then I usually fill the cap most of the way, but not quite all the way up. Right now I am using a store brand that works really well, so I only fill the cup up about 3/4 of the way full.

That is true sometimes you can't get away with using less detergent when you use a store brand.

I use less than half the recommended amount. After all, no matter what kind of detergent you use, all the soap does is break up water tension so that the water can flow through the fibers and take the dirt and smells away. Besides that, I can barely stand the smells of detergents--I refuse to pay more for scent free soaps but hate the perfume they put in my clothing. Why must everything be scented these days?!

I like the scents. But I'm sure the rationale behind it is to cover up body smells plus people like to smell "clean".
I don't have a choice in buying "free" kinds of soap as my son needs it for his eczema. He had a patch last year bout the size of a .50 piece and someone suggested to try to change detergents & that has done the trick more than rubbing him down with various moisturizers.

I honestly tend to use just a little bit more detergent than the company recommends. I believe that the reason that I use more is because of the fact that my husband works in a machine shop so his clothes are dirtier than the average clothes. I could probably could back down how much detergent that I use but it is such a long standing habit of my own that I find it difficult to break.
I don't really use any stain remover, so I don't know if that makes any difference or not.

My hubby works in an environment that can get pretty icky and dirty too. I usually use my lesser amount but I also wash his clothes in warm & on the heavy cycle and usually things come out just fine.

I usually use a lttle less. For one thing I use a concentrated detergent and a little goes a long way. I also have a front load washing machine and too much soap in one of those can mean a major sudsy mess to clean up. During football and baseball season when I am washing my sons uniforms and practice clothes I add dishwashing detergent to my laudry soap for grass stains.

Does the dish soap work on grass stains? I had not thought of that for grass, once in a while my kids will get some on their jeans.

no,it depends on how much and how dirty.
it's kind of like food measurements, they're usually off a bit.

That is so true! Plus some machines clean better than others with or w/o same amount of detergent in them.

I usually use a small amount less than what is recommended and always try to make it a full load. My boyfriend, on the other hand, often uses the full amount. I try to tell him it's not necessary and we can save money and resources by just using a little less, but he doesn't listen. He also washes his SHORT hair twice each time he showers.
Oh well, at least I finally got him to shut off the water while he brushes his teeth!

Hate it but it sounds like a typical guy to me. Hubby always uses too much shampoo, it's like you have a crew cut how much do you really need? Sadly we have to do all the skimp'n to stretch our pennies. It'll take time but they will pick up on some of the things we do eventually or a decade or two!

Hi. 3SnuggleBunnies. I use enough of detergent that will make enough of suds so that my clothing can wash correctly. I never seem to go by the recommendations of what the detergent company states. I go by my own personal judgement. I agree that spray n wash works really well.

And of course if you don't think spray-n-wash is enough on some of those tough spots I like to rub in dry detergent. Wich will stick somewhat to the spray and wash when rubbed in.

I fill the cap to the brim, sometimes a bit more, for every load. Our clothes are really dirty! Plus I use cheaper detergent most of the time.

If mine were really dirty I'd load up on the detergent & put it on a heavy wash cycle. I use as cheap as I can find in HE w/ dye free+

I use half of the recommended mount. Have done this for years. I also use the shortedt cycle and wash in cold water. After all, they just want us to buy more detergent don't they? Because we live in a hot country our clothes are basiclaly clean but need to be changed twice a day - more sometimes.

I usually wash in only cold water unless the clothes are a bit grimey where I know they'll need that lil extra to get it out w/ my washer. Of course they want you to buy more detergent, it's one of those many products you have to use.......

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one who uses less than the recommended amount of laundry detergent! Like you, I rarely use the full amount. I use liquid detergent, and I usually fill up about 3/4 of the way to the line. If I have an extra large or extra dirty load, I'll fill it up to a little bit over the line. I agree that the clothes always seem to come out clean, so I keep doing it!

exactly.... no problems with things comming clean. And if there is something with a stain on it I use spray & wash and usually that takes care of it besides the detergent.

I can imagine it's pricey in a rural area. I know the rural areas up north groceries are more expensive than they are here.
Sadly the good stuff that smells awsome is sooo pricey. It's like paying for perfume you wash out! Though my son has eczema so I have to use the free & clear varieties so no good smelly stuff unless I douse it in a load that I know is just mine or hubby's.
