What books did you read as a kid?  email this discussion to a friend?

How many of you have loved reading since a really young age, and what books did you read as a kid?
My parents were determined to plant the love of reading in me. I remember being four and Mom telling me I had to follow along while she was reading so I could learn to do it myself. By the age of six I was reading books on my own. Some of my favorite books and books series were the Baby Sitter- Little Sister series, the Bailey School Kids Series, Bruce Coville's Unicorn Chronicles (Ironically, I am still waiting for the last book in this series. *sigh*), the Secrets of Droon series, and the magic tree house series. There was also a children's classic that I liked called the Secret Garden. What did you read?

Mt first favorite book was "The Fat Cat Sat on the Mat." It was the first book I was ever able to read. I also loved the cat in the hat books as a child. They were so silly and I just liked the pictures and rhymes.

Well, to me that is a long time back to remember. But the first book that I can remember reading was "Charolettes Web" I can't remember any other books than that one until I was in high when I read "King Rat" by James Clavell. Know I am trying to get that whole series. I got 3 or 4 out of 6. Like Shogun, King Rat, and Gai-jin.

When I was really young, I loved the Dr. Suess books, the Arthur books, the babysitters club series and the poem books by Shel Silverstein- oh, and of course Where The Wild Things Are. ^-^
I read tons of picture books when I was in elementary school. As I got older, I started reading the Harry Potter series and the Redwall books.

Oh yes. I read the BSC books and the Shel Silverstein books too! :) I started reading the Harry Potter books when they came out in my late teens.

I read Shel Sliverstein's poem books too. I also started reading the Harry Potter series when it first came out when I was in third grade, but I stopped reading when it seemed everyone was reading them. I know it was a silly reason to stop reading, but I couldn't stand how all the other kids didn't seem to think reading existed before Harry Potter. I didn't finish the series until they were all out and I was a teenager.
I haven't read the Redwall books, but I know they're a children's classic so I might try them one day.

one of my favorite books even as an adult is the phantom tollbooth. With the magic of Alice in Wonderland the Tollbooth has a way of pulling you into the land of beyond and opening the imagination. It was that book that made me want to be a writer myself. To have the ablity to pull people into a world I created is one of the best rewards i have in my life.

I enjoyed the Little Sister's series as well. I read a lot of Babysitters club as well. My all time favorite though was Sideways Stories from Wayside School. I have a 6 and 5 year old, and I still had my copy of the book, and I read it to them and they loved it. As I got a little a little older, I really enjoyed Lois Duncan and RL Stine. I am readying the Magic Tree House series to my kids now, we just started the first book, and I am pretty impressed with it. For being a children's book, they do a decent job of holding my interest!

I didn't read the babysitter's club, just the little sister series. I'm really not sure why. I haven't read Sideways Stories from Wayside school, but I really think I should. I think I remember wanting to read it but never actually getting around to it. Good for you, reading the Magic Tree House books to your kids! It's a good series.

There were so many books I read as a kid but to name a few was The Babysitter's Club, Sweet Valley High, Goosebumps, etc. One of my favorite children books was The Magic Room by Scott Spencer. Now in grammar school (circa 1992-1997 lol), there were many stories that still stand out in my mind that we had to read in Literature class like On the Sidewalk Bleeding, A Raisin in the Sun, Mr. Minu(West African folk tale story), Stray Cat, and much more. But what really triggered my love for reading is science fiction and fantasy stories. One story that I still have a softcover of is The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkein. After seeing an animated movie of the story, I started reading more books on the fantasy genre.

I love reading fantasy! I read some science fiction but not much. My real love is fantasy. I didn't read the Hobbit as a kid, and I don't quite remember when it was that I started to love reading fantasy stories. I read the Hobbit only recently, and it was after I read the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I probably should have read it before, but oh well.

I was always and avid reader .I read everything I could get my hands on .My grand mother had a big book on medical diseases and I remember reading it from back to front.Luckily it had pictures and that made it enjoyable.
Next I read all her religious books she had a book of short bible stories and it too was nicely illustrated and I read it from back to front.I also read her more serious scriptural books as well.
Apart from that I also joined teh local libarary and I remember running out of books to read in the detective scientifi and mystery categories.

I liked to read The babysitters club, the box car children and nancy drew. I always liked to read too. I also loved agatha christie as I got a little bit older. It is so neat to see my daughter reading. She is 7 and already reading at a second grade level. She loves to read. She is reading some of the box car children books that used to be mine which is really cool. she also likes the junie b jones series.

I read a few of the box car children. Those were pretty good. Keep your daughter reading!

I read lots of Enid Blyton and Roald Dahld. Later on, I began reading Charles Dickens before I moved into my teens and got hooked on Sweet Valley and Babysitters Club. LOL. And not forgetting the New Kids on the Block series.
