Traveling to an airport

When you get a flight do you have to travel far to get to your home countries largest airport? When I was younger my sister lived very close to London Gatwick Airport. I could stay there until I had to go off to get my flight. Trains ran all night to that airport from where she used to live. Now we live about 5 hours away from London Gatwick Airport and London Heathrow Airports. To get to those I have to take three trains and a bus. We have Bristol Airport close by but getting back from there needs a taxi if it is early or late. They only fly to European destinations from there. What is your journey like to your nearest airport?

That is what always trouble when I go for travel overseas. I am staying about 2 hours away from the KL International Airport, and there are not really convenience transport available. Though there are cab that I can take but it is quite expensive which cost me around $50 for a single trip and it can only fits in 4 person the most. So, what I always do is to drive my own car and park my car at the airport which only cost me around $10 a day. That will be so much cheaper and is much convenience for me where I can choose my own sweet time to start my journey.

I have a few options for getting out of the country by air..Derry City Airport, the closest with international options is under an hour from Me, and has regular connections with London's Stansted Airport, handy for short visits there. for International flights,Belfast's 2 Airports between them offer a mix of connecting flights (Via London or regional mainland airports) and direct ones. They're both around 90 minutes by car.Public transport..figure half a day each way...Dublin Airport is a 3 hour bus trip away after a taxi to my closest bus station-the bus and taxi return fare combined is less than long stay parking costs,(Never mind the fuel cost for the trip..)and for an early morning departure or arrival I can nap on the way!

An added bonus with the Dublin bus is that it stops and picks up right at the Airport Terminal-no additional connections or travel required-just retrieve your bags and cross the road into the check in area inside!

Dear friend,
Here where I live is in South India a palced called Kochi a small town. It takes 45 minutes from my hoem to International Airport. The train are not suitable as the time is not accurate. We usually hire a taxi or our vechiles that too moslty we make sure to start half hour early.

I have to get a ride or a taxi to the next village, then from there I get a bus to town. From town I can get a bus or a train to the city, then another bus to the airport. When I'm coming home, I need to make sure I arrive in the morning otherwise i can't make all the connections to get home in a day.

You seem to have a similar journey to your nearest airport. If my flight leaves London Heathrow Airport in the morning I travel the previous day and stay overnight in a bed and breakfast. I don't like arriving back there in the evening because I have to race home before the trains stop running for the night. One time I went to the town station at 23.00 and had to wait hours for a taxi. Many people were out that night because it had been the carnival.

it takes around 45 minutes to an hour to the airport from my place, depending on the traffic.
if going there and using your own vehicle or a taxi, i guess 30 minutes would suffice.

Hi Ann. I think that 45 minutes is quite a short journey to your nearest airport. One time I arrived back at Bristol Airport after midnight and wanted to take a taxi. I waited hours and shared the taxi with three other travelers. I don't like the high cost of parking at the airport.

My journey is quite short, it takes 30 minutes for me to get to the nearest airport. I usually get there with my family by car, so it's not too expensive; fortunately, my grandparents agree to come with us each time we have a flight, so they can drive back home and we don't have to leave the car at the airport parking.

In the city we are now settled in (for the past 11 years), we first lived at the other side of town and the local airport was quite far for us. Not many international flights took off from here and most of the time the starting point was Mumbai (in another state). So, if we wanted to travel outside the country, we took a local flight to Mumbai and then caught the international flight. 8 years back, we moved to an area that was close to the airport...and it was just a 15 minute drive (10 with no traffic). A couple of years back, a bigger airport with international flights too....was built at the other end of town (closer to where we were first!). Now, that's the main airport and the one closer to us has closed down. It takes close to an hour and a half to drive to the airport (on a good day)....but the good news is that most international flights start from here.

Depends on what largest airport definition means... if it's a non-stop to just about anywhere in the world then you are talking JFK (New York) and no that is not close at all. If you are talking International Airports then there are a couple that are within an hour and a few that are within two hours.
In the US we have 'hubs'. These are airports that almost every flight will fly through and depending on the airline the hub is different. There are fewer and fewer direct flights and more and more regional flights. For example to get to Los Angeles from say Baltimore... that is one coast to another... flying slightly south.
But... depending on the airline you would go all the way up to Detroit (northern most part of US) then take a flight from Detroit (a hub) to LA....
That keeps most of America within reach of an airport. I don't know of anywhere where you would be five hours away from an airport.
Thanks

Largest airports... I guess its about 4 hours to DFW from here, but only about an hour's flight from Austin-Bergstrom. Its less than a half hour drive to the airport, and if you take the shuttle service, cheaper than a cab and cheaper than long-term parking, tho you have to be ready to take it both ways if you can't find a ride one way or the other.

No, I don't have to travel far at all. The international airport is about 20 miles from my place. It's so close I can watch the planes fly by...sometimes they even go right over my house! LOL
Happy mylotting!

Well, the airport from which I have to catch flights is nearly 13 Kilometres from my home. So, it is not so far, still I start pretty early to avoid traffic. However, I had an experience in US, where I had to travel nearly 2 hours and probably 70 Kilometre or so to reach JFK airport from Jersey City. It was a pretty hectic journey and through the crowded roads of NewYork city. However, it is much better than what you have to do to get to your airport- 3 trains and a bus is a bit too much! Aren't there any direct trains to these airports for you?

I am currently staying in the capital city of Malaysia.
Years back there is this airport which only takes me
25 minutes to travel. However, the new international
airport is much further now. It takes about 45 minutes
to travel by car. Nevertheless, there are many mode of transportation
during the day. I can take a LRT (fast train) to Central Station
and from there I have a choice of either travel by bus, train or cab
to the airport.

There is an airport pretty close to my home, but it is a small airport and it is only possible to fly to a few destinations. I prefer to fly from the airport in Copenhagen, because it is the biggest airport in my country and there are a lot of destinations to choose from. It takes me a couple of hours by car to get from my island to Copenhagen. If I want to use public transportation I have to catch a bus from my island to the main city of the neighbout island and catch a train from that city to Copenhagen. We also have some airports in the western part of the country, and one of them is quite big, but not as big as the airport in Copenhagen.

Hi Maxine,
It takes about an hour from my house to Santiago´s airport. What I usually do is to hile some airport minibuses that collect people along the way. It´s the cheapest way to go there. I guess the worst part of going someplace now is the far airports are and all the time you have to wait there before actually boarding the plane.

When I was growing up, I didn't live in the capital city. Although an airport was not more than 30 minutes away, it was only a domestic airport. I still had to take an hour and a half plane ride to the capital city, before I could fly off to other international destinations.
Lately I heard that the domestic airport where I grew up was upgraded to an international airport and was servicing several international cities.

I consider myself lucky since the nearest international airport is less than an hour drive away. If I pick a very early flight, travel time would be less since there is less traffic. I only wish we could have buses or trains that can take us straight to the airport. currently, there are none so it's either driving or taking a taxi to the airport.
