That was strange

I was sitting here, reading a book, between looking at discussions and thinking about answering them.
And while I was reading the book, I looked at my hand.
Well, actually, the back of my hand...
Suddenly, it seemed my hand wasn't MY hand any more, it was some stranger's hand.
Or maybe my mother's hand...
It was an OLD hand.
Now, I have freely admitted to all of you that I am closer to 60 than 50, but some how this was a disturbing find.
Some how, the skin of my hand has become more translucent, the veins stand out more prominently, the bones are more visible...
Maybe its because I was looking at it with my reading glasses on?
I can't say this was exactly good news for me... My mom was still a busy and vital woman at 57, I'm not so much...
As I used to tell my mom, these last few years, "This getting old stuff ain't for sissies."
It was the last thing that really made my mom smile besides me coming in and saying "Hi Mom."
So, have you noticed any disturbing and unexpected signs of aging lately?

Hi ElicBxn
Though I am not near the ages you stated, and am very active as I do exercise quite a bit and for some odd reason feel that I am more tired now then I ever have been. I find that I don't have the energy as I did several years ago so I guess I am aging too. lol happens to the best of us.
I was wondering if the lighting was either way to lite and or too dark as I have had moments like you mentioned with your hand too as I think it has to do with re-adjusting of the eyes with the way we are in total concentration and the eyes have to some how refocus again.

My skin decided to become "dry skin" this year. That was odd. I think it looks better now that I am using the hot tub and sauna. I think the chemical in the hot tub is soothing to my skin, it is something besides chlorine.

I have to say that I seldom see my hand kind of flat like it was on the page of the book, so that was probably part of it, normally its always kind of got a little curve and that seems to not bring out the bones and thinness of the skin as much, but the veins are definitely more visible than they used to be... I have also noticed that I scratch more easily, and I remember telling my mom when she was my age to stop picking at scabs (yes, I find myself doing it, but I scold myself and stop)
When my mom was 57, I was about 30ish, so I do have some pretty good memories of the time

No, I haven't noticed anything like that but I have noticed that all my mirrors have something wrong with them.
Yeah, actually, I've noticed. I think it was about 10 years ago when I looked at myself in a mirror and said, "My MOTHER is supposed to be this old, not me!" I fought it for awhile, as I've always said I would. I was going to go into old age "kicking and screaming".
Then, it happened.
Resignation.
Oh, I definitely do not like it but, since there's nothing I can do about it, I've decided to simply accept it. That cute guy looking my way isn't looking at me, he's looking at that cute YOUNG girl behind me. Those new, adorable clothing styles aren't meant for me, they're meant for someone 20 years old.
The worst part of it all is that I NOW understand the theory behind the HOUSECOAT. (Shudder!!!) Yeah, when comfort moves in after shoving style out, you'd pretty much have to resign yourself to the fact that, well, you ain't gettin' any younger!
BUT, old age does have it's perks, even in today's world. We get discounts all over the place. It's easier to get a seat on a crowded bus or train. You're able to talk to yourself in public without everyone looking at you like you've grown a second head. (I'm always talking to myself in the grocery store.) Heck, you can even fart in public and no one will tease you about it!
Okay, they will snicker and whisper but, hopefully, by the time you're farting in public your hearing will be so far gone that you won't hear them snickering or whispering.

Thanks for the BR, Elic! Re-living this discussion was just what I needed today. I was feeling old and worn out (most likely because of this stupid infection that isn't quite gone yet) and needed the laugh. I'm also very glad I could give Maggie that belly laugh.

It seems that the last three or four years have aged me a lot. I have some age spots, and carry too much weight, and I do not spring back as easily as I used to. Yep, I think it happens.I think you just gave me an odd moment as well. I know that I am also closer to 60 than 50, but I just now heard you say it and realized it was me. I also find I am grumpier than I want to be.

Unfortunately, Bob gets most of the grumpy moods from me. I am likely to be grumpy tomorrow, we are up tooooooo late, listening to old music on PBS.

I know the feeling. I will be 40 this month an I look at my skin and body every single day and do not know what happened to my young looking body an skin. It doesn't look old but I can sure tell a big difference as to how it used to look. I guss that is just part of the aging of life.

Hi, ElicBxn,
I was just reflecting on how I should accept aging. I am not a vain person, the only beauty advice I took seriously was to wear sunscreen and I have been doing it everyday since I was 25 (I'm on my mid-30s now). However, just last month, I noticed that a portion of my forehead show real sign of aging, it has wrinkles. It was unexpected considering that I have been religious with the sun screen regimen. But then, maybe I started late, or maybe it's genetic. I hope to be strong and accepting when more signs of aging will show on my body. Your Mom is right, aging is not for sissies...

I have several answers to this
1...don't get me started
2...where do I start?
3...how much time do you have?
If I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror I don't recognise the old hag looking back at me. My lips have thinned terribly, my hair has dried out and has lost it's lustre, my skin has turned really dry and is actually a worry. My facial skin looks like I'm ill. My hands and feet appear swollen, my teeth are either breaking or coming loose. If I were a horse I reckon they'd shoot me.
Fortunately, the sense of humour has become looser and I believe it has saved me from myself quite a few times. I hope it continues to do so.

Would you believe, just now after reading this I took a good look at the back of my hand directly under the light I use at my computer and I realized there must be something going around or possibly there's a bandit going around stealing our hands and replacing them with hands belonging to old ladies! I'm even closer to 60 than you; I'll be 59 in August so I only have one more birthday before the big 6-0 and I have a feeling it's not going to be as easy to take as the other so-called "milestone" birthdays.
Getting old DOES suck, doesn't it? That is until we consider the alternative. I forget who was the first person I heard say that, way back when I was very young, but it's true. It seems I'm finding more saggy and flabby spots that weren't there before every day. I haven't been nearly as active as I always was for the past few years but I've been swimming almost every day and doing other exercises the past few months to try to get back in shape. Somehow it's not as easy as it used to be! I used to be able to eat whatever I wanted to and never gain an ounce; those days are gone...lol!
Anyway, hang in there and remember 60 is the new 40!

I agree with stowyk, I wish I had the energy I had at 40... heck, I didn't have a lot then either, lets go back to 30...
I guess the bad thing is that I really don't feel great a good bit of the time, so maybe I need to get my act together and do something - anything!

just how my bones feel when i get up.

yup.idiot doctor turning into the bike lane.he had better lawyers than me and got away with it too.
you'd think being in the lane and looking in the opposite direction while turning would be enough to get him charged.

I won't argue that. I am very lucky to still have my parents and hope to have them a few more years before their time is up.

Hadn't notice any signs til I've read this. I just got off in front of the mirror and found some wrinkles on my forehead and middle of the eyebrows. I'm only 26 but I guess that's what you get over-thinking stuff out.

White hair is very unpredictable. Some start off too young while others too old that's why I don't consider it a sign.

I know what you mean, I've experienced that, too. I look at my hands and expect to see the hands I had at 24 but they are old, old, old! And I don't recognize myself in the mirror with the grey hair, the slight bags under the eyes and the "laugh lines" around my eyes. There are wrinkles on my neck, everything is drooping and I'm frequently surprised all over again when my joints protest some movement.
But it's part of life and it just means that I'm closer to joining my mother and other loved ones. So I'm not usually disturbed by these signs, but comforted. My work is over half done and I can rest soon!!

Those fine lines that are showing up on my arms now that my skin has lost its elasticity. The bumps that are showing up, growths of some sort, that I remember seeing on my parents' hands and grandmother's hands, the age spots (which fortunately, for now, look like freckles, so they tend to blend). And, the amount of gray hair I have is very disturbing to me. My mother never did turn gray - she had some gray hairs, but her hair mostly turned a lighter shade. I had always assumed that it was because she was born a redhead. Apparently, I made an @ss/u/me.

Several years ago, I noticed that my hands looked exactly like my mother's hands. A surgeon could have exchanged them, and no one could have told the difference. Arthritis bent each of our fingers in exactly the same manner.

I turn 59 in July. I am not scared of my age, and accept the changes of my body as far as looks.
I look younger than most my age probably cause I am slender, and I always use a good moisturizer on my skin daily. I don't believe in trying to use all the techniques to stay young looking, and I think one day in Yahoo news it stated that the majority of high priced skin moisturizers for the face sold are scams. I had to laugh as I know hundreds of women through the years that spend 100.00's on face creams, revitalizing creams, etc.
but I live in Florida and we know that our skin can dry from the sun rays here so I do use a good moisturizer body and hand cream.
I use mostly Bigelow, Bath and Body and Victorias Secrets. My husband usually gets me a gift card to either Bath or Body and Victorias. Its always more than I can use in a year so I share some when the annual sales come with my girlfriend.
That way we both stay moisturized and smell good!
Over Xmas a lady come up to me and asked me what I used on my face. I told her water. She said no what do you wash with on your face I replied WATER.
She could not believe I was not using all the stuff that was out on the market.
But that is basically all I have used on my face
And i have not had any problems with my skin.
Wierd I know.
Anyway cut yourself some slack and just enjoy aging. Its a part of life. And while there are things to aid you for a bit the end result of aging is inevitable and a part of life!
I have always accepted it.
