But mom.. I don't wanna go to school today!

My 4th semester of classes start today at noon. I've had a nice long month off from classes, in which I spent quite a bit of my time being rather bored (when I wasn't moving or cleaning or dealing with FIL's death.. it's been a hectic month). I'm just finding that I don't really have the motivation to continue with my schooling anymore. I'm more than half done. After this semester I'll have 2 more to go, but they will be lighter. Each semester normally has 4 classes, but next semester will have 3 and my last should have 2 (either that or they'll try to give me all 5 next semester and I'll be done in August). I think the problem is I feel I don't really need the schooling anymore. I found a job that I love, and even if this job doesn't work out, at this point I can get a job at any bank I want. Unfortunately the degree I'm pursuing has nothing to do with banking. I'm pursuing a degree as a medical secretary.. so to me it seems pointless to continue trying to obtain this degree when it has nothing to do with the field I've landed in. At this point it is too late to change my major, otherwise I'll end up extending my schooling a whole other year.. and I really just want to be done with it now. I told myself I would stick it out and get my degree as a back up plan, because that's the smart thing to do. But I'm finding it hard to find the motivation to want to stick it out. I mentioned it to hubby, and he was no help. He could only thing of the financial aspect and said if I quit now I'll have fewer student loans to pay back. Hopefully I will find the motivation soon. Otherwise I'm thinking my goal will no longer be to keep a 4.0 GPA, it will just be to pass and get through it!

I think that you must look a bit further down the road as it would be better for you to have options. Yes, you love your present job but a degree would look so much better on your resume. I would stick to it Kat. You never now what life may throw at you and it could be a life saver later on. People need to have more than one skill as we live in a different age and must be more marketable. Only you can make up your mind and decide but my advice is to see it out. Think what an example you are setting to your children? You don't really want to do it but you are sticking it out to the end. You can remind them of that in their school years if their grades drop

Yes I know the degree will help me in the future, I just don't really feel like doing it right now, you know? I will do it, because I have to.. I just don't really want to.

I think you need to finish. Whether it is a 4.0 or not is immaterial. However, even though you are not going into the field you are seeking a degree in, potential employers look at a degree, and those letters after your name as proof that you start something and can finish it. I know of too many people who have been able to get a job desired based on having a degree rather than the field of study. My brother is a fine example of that. He has a ministerial degree, and yes, he is a pastor, but he also has to have another job to earn a living. He was able to go to work in a social work position and also has worked various other positions in his state based on having a bachelors degree and the equivalent of a Masters as well. As far as student loans go, an education is not going to get any cheaper, better to have the loans and the foundation now, and not have to think about applying for more financial aid later. This is from an old woman who got her AA and should have gotten a BS but did not want to finish.

Yep, you're right. Problem is, before I got this job I had motivation to continue my schooling because I wanted a good job. Now I have one. I know in the back of my mind that something can always happen and I'll somehow lose the job.. or maybe down the road I'll decide I don't want to be in banking anymore and want a different type of career. But thinking that far down the road doesn't give me the motivation I need to continue my schooling right now, you know?

It truly is hard to get back on board after we've had a break. I know what you are going through in a different way. I have written three books.....the fourth has 9 chapters done...for two years. I just can't get myself to sit down and start writing. I have been doing too many other things...people keep asking me when the next one will be done....I don't know. I hope you do find out what you truly want to do...I know if you take a break you probably won't go back at all. I am no help I know....just go with your heart....

It's not even just the break.. I was feeling like this before the break, but back then I just kept reminding myself that the semester was almost done. I wasn't really thinking as far ahead as the next 3 semesters. Perhaps that's my problem. Maybe I should focus on one semester at a time instead of thinking about the next 3 semesters.

Keep at it! If you don't I'm sure you will kick yourself after. When I took my degree I felt much the same as you towards the end. In the end I had to compress the final two courses into one year otherwise I know I would have quit. It was really hard with a job too, but I at least completed it. That was pre-children though, which made life considerably easier than your situation!

It's not so much the kids right now.. they're all set. We've got the house and yard now so they can go play. Last year I did feel a little guilty if I couldn't get them out to play often enough, but back then because of where we lived I physically had to take them somewhere to let them play, but now I just send them outside and as long as the older ones are watching the younger ones, I can sit here and do some school work and not worry about it.

HI katsmeow, The decision will all be up to you. Personally, if I am only a few classes away til I complete my studies I would still go for it. It is great to have at least other degree or knowledge on something else aside from what job we have currently. We won't whether we might be able to use it someday too. Hope you get the motivation to keep going.

I think that you should continue your studies until the end. With so much unemployment you never know what you might face at the future so you should be prepared. The more you know the better for you. Good luck with your choice

Oh no.. I haven't been back on mylot in a while and just now seeing that your father in law has passed away. I am really sorry to hear this. I think finishing school will show your kids that is always best to finish their schooling and not quit. It can show them the strength in you to finish what you start even though it is the last thing from your mind at the time.. My friend quit and now she regrets it. So stick in there..hang on..and will yourself to hold steady the path you mapped out for yourself.

That's great!...My friend was becoming a teacher.. she had over enough credits to even substitute classes..and she just quit out of the blue. She can still sub if she wanted to but she doesn't even do that. Hope it gets easier sooner..

I haven't quit yet. I want to see it through, but it's tough. I don't really have the desire or motivation to do my school work. I have the rest of this year to go yet.. but in a few months it will get easier because I'll drop down to 1 class at a time instead of 2.

hi katsmeow I am wondering which is the more lucative field medical secretary or bank employee? It might be good to h ave this degree just in case as it cannot hurt to have expertise in two different fields. Me now wou ld love to have done something in the medical field when I was younger b ut that was then, I am elderly and all past that stuff now.I think you really should try to keep a high GPA as it looks good on any resu me.

Right now I'm getting paid the same as I would starting out at a medical secretary. Though I'm only part-time, I get full benefits. Medical, paid holidays, 2 weeks of vacation, sick time, 401K. What more could I ask for.. other than more hours, but that will come once I've been with the company awhile.

Your title reminded me of my 5-year old this morning. He was crying because he didn't want to go to school. He was saying that it was already Saturday (it's Friday). Last spring I decided I wanted to go back to school. So, I requested extension for my program because I quit more than 5 years ago. I was supposed to finish it in 7 years, but since I stopped, I requested for an extension approval. After jumping through a few hoops, I was approved. But then I moved to this new job, and now I also couldn't find that motivation that poked me last spring.

So are you in school or not? I know it's hard to find the motivation.. I'm still not motivated to do this classwork, but thus far I've been doing it. But as an outsider looking into your situation, it would have been smart to stick with the classes after going through so much to be able to get back into them. Once it's done, it's done and you never know when you might need that degree.

I'm a registered student again, but I am not currently enrolled in any courses. That program I am in was supposedly to get a certain kind of work. I'm already in that work. And I discovered having and running a business last year. Thus, the lack of motivation.

Hi! i would suggest you continue and finish your course, you have spent a considerable time in that course and money too, so that would be a good fall back just in case. It is fun to learn new things always, so just be patient.

I think you should not stop schooling now. You'll definitely regret a few years later. Like you said, you just have another 2 more semester to go. You have already went that far and way stop now? Furthermore, you think that you like the banking job now, but i believe in a few years time, you might think otherwise. Getting the degree means that the knowledge is yours. Even when you don't want to be in the banking industry in future, you'll have the option of doing something else. I think you should really put your heart into studying and then graduate.

The decision is all yours. We are here to give you support and pieces of advises to help you decide whether you continue or not. As for me, I would finish what I have started even though this is not really the course I want.
