It's all fun and games until someone loses a tooth...

Today was a friend's birthday, so I called her after dinner to wish her a happy birthday and catch up.
Predictably, as soon as she answered the phone, the kids decided that roughhousing with their father would be a Really Good Idea. I retreated to my bedroom to escape the noise.
It lasted for about thirty seconds before the kindergartner came barreling in. "Mom! Mom! I lost my tooth!" Sure enough, there's a little tooth there in the palm of her hand, which means the tooth fairy needs to sober up so she can do her job properly tonight. Of course my friend found the whole thing extremely hilarious. I told her this is the sort of stuff she gets to look forward to when her toddler is a little older.
My husband and I were joking about whether or not the kindergartner would be able to say "All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth," since that one's been loose for a few months now. Does it still count if they're the bottom front teeth?

Whats with human kids and canine kids? The second the phone is in action they're ready to party down. Our pups even start barking right before the phone rings. Good luck with that tooth- what is the going rate for teeth these days?

Our fairy seems to be fond of leaving dollar coins behind. The kid got $2 for her first one.
One of my friends assures me the going rate for teeth in his household is $600. I suspect their fairy is probably going to reevaluate things once their son is old enough to start losing teeth...

No wonder my daughter complains about how much money she gets from the tooth fairy ... she only gets $.50 because our tooth fairy is poor!

@yukimori My daughter loved it when she lost a tooth the day before St. Patrick's Day, because she got a whole dollar from the tooth fairy. Our tooth fairy is smart and gave her paper money, so those pesky Leprechauns wouldn't steal her shiny coins.

@purplealabaster Hm... Leprechauns would definitely be a reason to not give nice shiny coins.
Gold dollars are kind of the traditional thing in our house. The kid gets them for her allowance and pretty much every other special occasion, too. In fact, she's so unused to paper dollars that she was extremely skeptical when I handed her a $1 bill this morning for the pizza thing her class is doing.
If only she knew exactly how much aggravation I go through to get her dollar coins from the bank... it's a crapshoot as to whether or not they have them, and sometimes I have to settle with just 4 or 5 at a time.

I remember for my daughter, all she wanted for Christmas was to have a loose tooth period! All her friends had been losing teeth since kindergarten (some even earlier) - but my daughter lost her first tooth towards the end of 3rd grade! My son has been noticing that too - the kids in his K class have already lost teeth and he is wondering why he is not.
Well, the bottom teeth are still in the "front"!

@yukimori I actually don't remember when I lost my very first tooth (I should ask my mom but I doubt she remembers). I do remember in my 3rd grade photo the 2 front ones are missing. I do remember I loved twisting my loose teeth - it hurt so good - ha ha!!
I was told that the permanent tooth can be discolored if there was trauma during baby teeth times. Both of my kids have smacked their faces good a few times, so I've always worried about that too though they didn't chip any teeth. But better to chip the baby ones rather than the permanent ones!!

I was surprised that she's losing her teeth so early, but now that I think about it I think I was in kindergarten when I lost my first one. I remember thinking that I had something like a piece of sand in my mouth, and it wouldn't come out... and then I realized my tooth was loose!
The dentist the kids see mentioned that it looked like she'd had a bit of trauma to her front teeth, since the roots were so short... I guess that can affect how soon they come out. Poor kid tripped and fell on the concrete at her school when she was in the toddler room, and ended up chipping one of them.
Never seemed to bother her as much as it bothered me...

@much2say Yeah, that's definitely the case. At least with baby teeth repair work might not be necessary... can't let something like that go with an adult tooth, though.
I did the tooth-twisting thing, too. I think most kids can't resist the urge to mess with them once they're at that point. My favorite part was when I could push them forward enough to get my tongue under the back of them. No idea why...

I don't think so. But I know the first one the kids hate to pull it out. I remember the fuss my grand daughter made over hers and how much I laughed as she tried to tie string on it and pull it out. Finally she got it around her tooth and I yanked it. She had no idea what was coming. It was just hanging on with a thread so it didn't matter much at all. It was funny to see the look on her face.

Oh, I know. With the last one (her first), she absolutely refused to do anything with it. No wiggling, no poking, no prodding... the poor thing hung in there for nearly six months after we realized it was a bit loose, and this one lasted seven. She already had both adult teeth coming in by the time she lost them.
My poor husband was completely aghast at the fact that it came out when she bit his hand last night.

I used to get a sixpence for each lost tooth - I expect kids these days work out the rate of inflation and leave an invoice

That depends on who you ask, @marlina ! Hatley got a dollar for each tooth... I remember getting nickels and pennies until I requested the tooth fairy stop leaving piles of change. After that, I kept the teeth myself and wouldn't tell anyone where they were at! (I didn't like having to search my whole bed for loose change!)
What did the tooth fairy leave for you and then for your child(ren)? Sorry, I can't remember if I've ever read anything about you having any kids or not, hon.

I have to agree with @sallypup, it does seem like kids and pets do want to act up as soon as you get on the phone. I remember my kids doing that and now that they are grown and I have 2 dogs, they pick this time to either play or bark.

Oh, dear. I hadn't realized the tooth fairy was a honey badger. I guess this explains a lot of things, like the way that she manages to sneak into houses to exchange things for lost teeth. Honey badgers are experts at escaping and breaking into places!

@DaddyEvil No, I was thinking in terms of the "honey badger doesn't care" memes that are going around. Although the actual phrase isn't quite myLot-friendly.
Have you ever seen the documentaries about them? They're amazingly resourceful, determined creatures. And they really don't give a... well, you know. I was amazed at some of the footage there was of the badgers hauling things around so they could break out of their enclosures or get into people's homes.
Occasionally, I have to wonder if the toddler is part honey badger, because she displays some of the same characteristics and attitude.

@yukimori Okay, your comment makes no sense, whatsoever!
LOL! Don't worry about it! I figure pony must have changed his avatar or something to get that reaction from you!

My daughter uses a little box that I got years ago... it's made from carved antler. I had a "Tooth Fairy Bear" when I was a kid... it was a stuffed bear with a little pouch in its hands for the lost tooth. My mom actually tried to pawn it off on me a few days ago.
It's cute, but after a decade in a household where they smoke indoors there's no way I'm going to let it get near my kids.
She got another $2 for this tooth. She seems to consider it fair, thankfully...

@JudyEv That does sound like a pretty neat option. We don't have kangaroos around here, but the local zoological sanctuary has several wallabies. I bet they have some of those in their extensive collection of plush toys in the gift shop...

We do not have tooth fairy tradition here, but when my son lost his first tooth, I started to create a pouch for him, and wrote him a small letter (pretended from the tooth fairy). I have searched online and most people give cash, I have also read some give a charm to make up the charm bracelet which I think is a good idea.
As I don't have the habit of giving cash to my children, and I didn't go out and buy any charm bracelet, so I crocheted a small object for my son when he lost his tooth.

There are some sellers on Etsy who sell little handwritten letters from the tooth fairy. They do it so people can give letters from the tooth fairy without worrying that their kids are going to recognize their handwriting.
I love the idea of a small crocheted item in place of money. Do you plan to keep that up when he loses more teeth in the future? It sounds like it would be a great family tradition to have!

I still remember hav i ng to take our son to t he dentist as his first loose tooth could not c ome out.The roots were somehow tangled so the dentist numbed his gum then pulled it out. He said that happened nore often than people realize.

Oh, I bet you heard it so much that you're sick of it even now, huh?
Every time I come across a situation that makes me want to do something dumb like that, I take a deep breath and bite my tongue because I'm sure that the person has heard whatever song/comment/etc. way too many times in the past.

And I get to go through all of it again in just a few more years...
