Old Age May Stink But....

You might not like getting old but really, what is the alternative. Think about it. I believe the only alternative is death. I think I'll take getting old.
When I reached 60 my body started to fall apart. Everything started going wrong.
Not only that all my outer body parts started going south, if you know what I mean.
My body aches, my skin is wrinkled, and my knees don't want to hold me up.
What happening with the over 60 crowd out there?

This is part of a poem I wrote and posted on this site a while ago:
Old age comes on fairy feet
Tiptoes round you while you sleep,
When you wake, what? more grey hair!
How the heck did that get there?
Painful limbs and hearing gone
What else is there to go wrong?
Wrinkled skin and aching eyes,
That danged mirror must tell lies.
Yes, it seems that youth has fled,
Teeth by bed, not in your head,
What you eat goes on your hips
And your body sags and dips.

@jaboUK I love your poem. I got quite a laugh as I read it. You should put it on a post.
@nanette64 I agree, it is the truth.

60 seemed to be when my body started to groan and moan. My knees are shot and I got one of those hurrycanes for Christmas. As much as I hated to have to rely on a cane it does help. I had envisioned myself being one of those spry oldsters still able to do the hokey pokey

@marlina it's a cane that can stand upright on it's own and collapses so you can fit it in your purse. It comes in handy

@Marilynda1225 I did too. I thought I would never be old and limping along. I understand the hurrycanes are pretty good.

My metabolism is shot but that happened prior to 60. I do not look my age, I am told. I am too plump to wrinkle at this time. My knees have their moments but do better when I take them walking.

@GardenGerty there is something to being a little plump. I have been told that the skin may show the wrinkles earlier when the person is thin. I don't know if it is true.

I am 65, my knees ache since I have no cartilage but other than thinning hair, I have no complaints. My mom is 100 so I think I have long term genes!!

I'll be 65 in April @BelleStarr . My mom was 77 when she passed but that was from massive cancer. My dad is 85 but he has Dementia. Most of all the rest of the family goes into the 90's. If it wasn't for my severe spinal injuries, I'd be 40.

@BelleStarr it does sound like you have the long term genes. You are quite lucky.
@Nanette64 You sound like you belong to the long term genes pool too.

You're lucky that your body held out that long, my organs started to go on me in my late 40's. It isn't a picnic, but it is what it is and I grin and bear it each and every single day. Wrinkles and grey hair are the very least of my worries and I'm only in my early 50's.

Tell me about getting old the skin sags, everything goes wrong with your insides, your hair is gray or white, hands look like a skelton. Let's see what else you need to wear glasses and dentures, hard of hearing, cataracts, and how about adult diabetes and all kinds of things like that.

@AbbyGreenhill you are lucky. It seemed that my health problems all started showing up on my 60th birthday. Happy birthday to me.

@judyev I have trouble cutting my toe-nails too. Bending is harder and I'm not as flexible as I used to be

@fishtiger58 that's wonderful. I think I spent to much time working and not enough time taking care of myself. I mostly wouldn't be in the shape I am in if I had been more active. Live and learn.

I join the Sunday walk organized by the committee in my housing estate.
There are a few senior citizens who are very active.
They wake up at 5 am, have their breakfast, and by 6 am, they are practicing Tai Chi.
Our Sunday walk starts at 7 am.
Guess what, they are still energetic, and they can even run.
They are far older than you. Most are already in their 80s, and some are in their 70s.
I wish that I have their health when I reach their age.

Funnily enough my grand parents look ancient when they were sixty but I see people in their 80's these days who are still quite youthful. I hope your aches and pains clear up! As for your bits that are going south you could always start walking on your hands that way although they may go south it would all look proportionate and you would look perfect!

@HazySue I guess compared to 50 or so years ago life was so much harder for our grandparents. They had lived through the war on rations. Worked hard all their lives and did not have such luxuries we take for granted. The quality of food is so much better these days and health care is better.

@garymarsh6 if I thought it would help I would learn how to walk on my hands, my elbows seem to still be in good shape. As for the young looking oldsters, I wonder if it is the miracle of modern science that helps them still look so good.

I was still working for a rancher at 55 @HazySue but I think that just helped speed up the spinal injuries that my husband created. Now at 64, it's tougher to do anything. I can't even stand up totally vertical. I went from 5'11" to 5'8".

@nanette64 I think you are probably right. It is a shame we still don't have the vim and vigor we used to have.
