The Horse is arrested yet again.

I should have known I was pressing my luck when I saw a tiny corn plant growing among the tomatoes at Kaiser on Saturday (my evil doing) and planted another. Last night I received a surprise visit from my young neighbor friend, and I showed him my table and chair project. Of course, he asked to help, so I let him sand down a couple of slats on one of the chairs. Within five minutes, CFS was at my door. "Child Labor!" they cried. I was whisked off to jail (same cell, different roomie) and the child was returned safely to his mother. When I argued before the judge that kids like to do what they see adults doing, and that I was actually "modeling a productive skill" for the child, she decided that one night in jail was enough. With the help of my young friend, I've made good progress on the table and chairs. I'll post more pictures soon.

Once a delinquent, always a delinquent. It all started with train-hopping in Chicago as a young teen.

The punishment fits the crime! How dare you force a child to work? For shame! Haven't you learned by now that kids are supposed to sit on their rears and play video games all day?

I feel terrrible about what I've done, laughing with a child, playing trucks and cars with him, and then teaching him how to do woodworking. Some day I'll learn. Next time I play soccer with him, I'll make sure there's lots of Gatorade around so I don't get picked up for Child Dehydration. I hope keeping him from his videogames isn't considered abuse.

@TheHorse As long as you don't give him water, you should be fine. Gatorade has the appropriate amount of sugar and electrolytes that a child craves. Anything healthier than Gatorade will have the police on your tail again!

@TheHorse Child Dehydration is neglect especially if it has more than 20 minutes since he had a soda. It is right up there with child hunger, meaning you have no pizza in the house.

Those child labor laws need to be rechecked, at a certain age a little working does a child good ....... hummm I wonder where I could get one, I've got sooo many chores I could offer one

I don't think there's a big problem with older teens working in places like McD's but those under 13 are probably those that are most likely protected by laws @TheHorse I'm not sure what parents do anymore. I don't have kids but if I did I'd make sure they earned any allowance I might want to give. Appreciation is born of labor while getting something for free is not.

I'm not even sure what the laws are. I know that McDonalds is a good place for late teenagers to have their first job. In my day, I'd get a quarter or a dollar or something for mowing the lawn. Do parents still do that?

@rebelann I'm sure there's a minimum age for working at McD's.

It is against the law to ask a child to do anything. When I was a kid, I had to haul wood, haul water, do dishes and a whole bunch of other things. My parents would be in jail if that happened today.

@TheHorse I am not sure what CFS stands for. We have CPS here. Somebody got arrested because they refused to take the kid to McDonald's. It is totally ridiculous, no common sense in America.

@akalinus Did that actually happen? Or is that something from The Onion? Here in CA, what used to be called Child Protective Services (CPS), is now called Children and Family Services (CFS). Same thing, different name.

@TheHorse As you should rightly be. In view of your remorse I would suggest that the sentence be reduced to 20 years hard labour.
