A meerkat kit has gone missing from Perth Zoo, Western Australia

Perth Zoo in Western Australia was thrilled with the arrival of a baby meerkat one month ago. The kit was due to make its public appearance tomorrow but it has gone missing. It might have been stolen but the more likely explanation is that it has been taken by a bird of prey. The meerkats at Perth Zoo are slender-tailed meerkats. They have a light silvery-brown coat with dark stripes on the back and dark fur round the eyes. The tail is 17–25 cm long with a dark tip on the end. Its long front claws are used for digging burrows and finding food. They are very cute and very family oriented. There is always a sentry on duty to warn of danger but in this case, it seems the sentry let the side down. And isn’t it hard to say ‘meerkat kit? I keep wanting to change it to ‘mere Kitkat’ The photos were taken at Western Plains Zoo near Dubbo, New South Wales.

How awful! I hope that the poor baby meerkat is found and hasn't been taken by a bird of prey.

This is a very cute animal. I don't understand why the baby merkat can be missing. Try to think about the positive way, finally this little merkat has won the freedom.

@DaddyEvil I just hope for the best. It would be terrible if there was something bad happened to this meerkat.

@youless Yes, I would not like to hear anything bad happening to the baby meerkat, either. After I get to hug and cuddle with him for a little while (if Judy decides to share him) then I will send him on to you to hug, cuddle and love on him before you send him back to Judy again.

You really think the meerkat kit escaped the zoo and is making his way back to his family in the wild? Wouldn't that be something interesting! I happen to think Judy... uhm... made away with the baby and is hiding him so she can cuddle and love on him! I've already told Judy that it's my turn to hold, cuddle and love on the little baby! Would you like a turn, too?

@rebelann Do you have prairie dogs there? I've read quite a lot about them. They seem really cute too. Are they ever taken in as pets?

Those little animals are cute, a baby merkat was born last week in a Swiss zoo. I have seen the photos this morning.

Hope they find that little baby and it wasn't stolen or taken by a bird of prey. Meerkat kit is a bit of a tongue twister

It is such a shame. They are funny little creatures. This photo shows one that appears to be asleep on his feet. Just after this he fell over which woke him up with a start.

So, if it is a bird of prey who is the culprit, do you think the zoo will learn a lesson here and create a cage/enclosure/pen that has a roof or barrier to prevent birds from entering?

I hope so. The zoo is in the middle of the city so perhaps they don't get too many birds of prey. It would need to be biggish to cart off a meerkat kit - there's those words again!

And you think the meerkat kit was cute, don't you, Judy? Uh huh! I thought so! If you share the meerkat kit with Pretty and I we promise not to tell the zoo what actually happened to their new arrival! Don't you think it's our turn to cuddle and play with him now?

It would need special feeding so they're not hopeful. And I'm sure there would be CCTV cameras all over the place.

@judyev Belfast zoo has oodles of them running free on a large unfenced piece of dirt.

Maybe Belfast could send some to Perth. Perth Zoo has connections with Western Plains Zoo which has a lot too so I guess they can get more if they want them.
