Private D-i-c-k-s

Words are odd sometimes, but there are usually good enough reasons for where they come from.
Take the word 'd-i-c-k,' for example, which is a common term used for a detective.
While it seems maybe it was more directed at police officers, and could have been considered pejorative, apparently the word 'd-i-c-k' as it relates to detectives comes from the Roman word 'dik,' which means to look or to see.
Considering that is generally what private detectives do, look and see for clues and evidence of a crime, it seems that is probably the origin of the term.
By the way, one of my FAVORITE d-i-c-k-s is the one in the picture. Detective Columbo. I always had fun with the way everyone thought he was some clueless, bumbling fool, only to have him foil what would have otherwise have been the perfect crime every time.
BTW, apparently MyLot thinks I am using a bad word, thus the hyphens. CONTEXT MyLot. Context!

Well I learned something new today, about Latin Diks and about plurals. Great Saturday.

@just4him He was one of those actors that sort of got typecast in that role, but I don't think he cared. He was having the time of his life with the character, and it showed in that he was ALWAYS in character as Columbo. I think he had probably one of the best jobs in Hollywood, and it is still one of my all time favorite whodunit characters and shows to ever grace the screen.
It was clear that PEOPE loved him as Columbo as well. He always got great fanfare when he entered a room as Columbo.

Columbo probably was the best Detective role on TV. Another I enjoyed who came much later was "Monk." How is
obsessive-compulsive disorder is intertwined into each episode is priceless. And he copied the stumbling, clueless behavior first exhibited by Falk.

Well, my husband was typing something the other day and he wrote "c-l-a-s-s clown" in the post and they said that they detected a bad word! Even trying to post this comment I got that notice.
