The nerve of some people!

Yesterday, I received a phone call. A cheery voice said, "How are you doing today?" I said, "Actually my lower back hurts and my hemorrhoids have been flaring up a bit lately." She hung up on me! I was so hurt! Actually, she was a bot, and I suppose the pretend-interactive format they're using these days was not programmed for a (partially) honest answer. I never did learn what she was trying to sell. Do you get pretend-interactive phone calls? It seems to be the latest rage in phone solicitation.

It is getting so bad in phone land that I don't even answer it anymore. If I see it is a kid of mine or a friend, I will. All others go to message. Most of these don't bother to leave one, they just call again and again.

Yes, I've noticed that many are not programmed to leave a message.

@akalinus I'm confused. Why would leaving a message be illegal? (I can guarantee it isn't illegal anywhere in the US.)

@DaddyEvil I think it is illegal for robocallers to leave messages. I could be wrong about that, but a lot of these calls hang up when they are answered by a message device.

Have you seen JJ's video where he sits there smoking a cig and messing with someone telling him he owes the IRS (or something like that) money? It's pretty funny.

@TheHorse My favorite has been from one wanting to help me ease my pain. I tell them it is in my A** Most just continue reading from the script or hang up. But one guy after a long pause played along. If he hadnt been trying to scam people I could have liked him.

What kinds of things do you say to them? Depending on my mood I "mess" with them, or am sympathetic toward them, and wish them well.

Lately, I have been getting a lot of auto-dialed calls in Chinese or Korean. I'm not sure which. However, I do not feel a bit guilty about hanging up and blocking the number. I don't know how I ended up on that list, but they are certainly wasting their time!

@DeborahDiane Interesting! So someone did a demographic analysis and targeted your community. I'm surprised I haven't received any calls in one of the Indian languages.

@TheHorse - Our retirement community is very multi-cultural. The largest group is Caucasian, but we also have large groups of Koreans and Chinese, as well as other ethnic groups. I suppose that is why I get the calls, but they seem like strange robocalls. I can't even tell them, "Hey, I don't speak this language!" LOL

Some people would just say "fine, thank you". Your reply was a bit too challenging for them hey. I keep getting a recorded message about a transaction that has been stopped.

@TheHorse I am going to cancel that account because I don't believe the transaction exists. Yes, you don't have student loans yet they offer you help to pay them off!

@TheHorse No, because the idiots called from German Swiss and they used a German name (Heidi). Anna is the most common Italian name, someone with a little brain would have used Anna.

No, I don't get those. I've set my phone to ignore calls from any numbers that aren't already in my phone's directory. (Friends who get new phone numbers know they have to text me before they can call me. Them texting me lets me put their new number into the directory.) Maybe she was a sensitive interactive bot and you grossed her out, pony... *grinning at you*

Not very often anymore. I am on the national do not call list, and I complain every time someone calls anyway. But better still is that I only have a cell phone and if I do not recognize the calling number I do not answer it, I press ignore and go about my day. If it is something important, they will leave a message, which I will check in a few minutes to see if they did.

@TheHorse That is why I quit answering any number I do not recognize. The call list used to work fairly well, but there are ways now to fake the calling from number and that makes them nearly impossible to stop.

I have it easy to avoid this. My flip top phone has only a handful of phone numbers that I have saved. Whenever the phone rings I flip it open and if I don't know the number or it does not give me the name of one of the numbers I saved I just don't answer it.

Heh. What's weird is that they don't really exist. They're bots. Someone made a recording months ago, with some poorly designed algorithms, and they stumbled on your number. It's a non-event.
