He scared me, so I squeezed him

We went to Wendy's the other night. Hubby swallowed something the wrong way and was choking. I got up, got behind him, and prepared to do the Heimlich Maneuver but he coughed enough to get it clear. Meanwhile, a nice older man at the only other occupied table asked if we needed help. The restaurant manager came out to check on us. It was not as bad as it seemed and I am glad of that. I am glad people checked on us. One more reason we likely will not eat out much any more at all.

I am glad that everything turned out all right, I had a very bad experience a very long time ago when I was still living in NYC and on New Year's Eve out to make it even worse, I chocked on a piece of London broil and the man sitting at the table next to us saved me with the maneuver. However, since that time and all my life I have been afraid of choking again. I cannot swallow pills but crunch everything up if I need to take anything, I have nearly thought I was going to choke on liquids I drink and wind up with wild coughing fits and anything I eat I have to be sure is going to go down all right.

I wonder if you damaged your throat. That would be scary.

Poor you @RasmaSandra. I hate getting a chunk of pill caught in the side of my throat. Just miserable feeling.

Yes, he gets a dry choking cough often, as well. I keep mints in the car for him.

@LadyDuck Yes, it is. I believe it is a side effect of some of his medicines.

Your poor hubby. I'm glad he is okay. I get things going down wrong at times and get an incredibly itchy throat. Totally embarrassing but if I have to cough, I just have to, wherever I am.

I carry Altoids with me to help his tickle. Especially good in the car.

I look for this to happen more and more. Just aging, I think. Will not even try to wear his lower plates.

I have had to do this before for others. I guess background training comes into play. He did not seem real scared once it was over.

I would think it would be lucky being out. In case you had not been able to get him to cough it up.

He does not seem to choke at home. I guess he is not in as much of a hurry or trying to talk.

You so often here about bystanders, doing nothing, or taking pictures on their phones. I am glad not everyone is that way.
