A simple twist of fate

The other day, I decided that some Andersen's pea soup would make for a nice lunch. It's my favorite "pre-made" soup right now. I thought I might make a piece of toast to go with it, but I wasn't sure. As I was opening the can, I spied my Trader Joe's almonds to my left, on the counter. In a moment, I had another brilliant culinary flash: why not throw some almonds in the pea soup and see what it tastes like? I did so, and it was really good. The flavor contrast was there, and the texture contrast was pleasurable. I am an unstoppable chef! Have you made any interesting "tweaks" to your usual cuisine recently?

I just saw the name "Andersen" and hoped you had read Andersens fairy tales! I will now go wild in the kitchen = warm some sour cream porridge. Possibly have some ham with it.

@TheHorse It's unusal. I've had non-Norwegian visitors who tried it, they were puzzled ;-)

@Torunn I'm always up for trying something new. As long as it's not dog, cat, or (for obvious reasons) horse.

That sounds unusual to me. But I might enjoy it.

It is fun. I am a creature of habit, but like to add something new to keep things interesting.

@vandana7 They threw me in the pool and I floated. I think that meant I was a witch, but I was too fast and escaped before they could burn me.

Yes, I would do something like that. Or throw pickled pepper rings in it--they were good in chili. I am out of all kinds of cheese except blue cheese until Tuesday, so I am putting blue cheese in everything, too.

I like blue cheese on just about anything (not ice cream).

Do you have a favorite "thing to add"? One of mine is garlic.

@TheHorse It depends. Garlic powder is always in my cupboard. Soy sauce for salt. Onion powder, too.

@sallypup All sound good to me. I tend to use fresh garlic.

Yes, I tweaked some of the food that I have cooked. It depends on what I have in the kitchen,

Never heard of the brand. Are the peas yellow, not green?

@BarBaraPrz How odd. I'd have to taste it to give my opinion.

If they had colored the Pea Soup a bit of green, it would have looked better. But still, it looks healthy. Did you add any salt or pepper to this soup?

It "worked," so I'll probably do it again. Or just go for toast next time. Depends what I have more of, I suppose.

I made some spaghetti sauce with some crumbly chorizo sausages. I bought the wrong chorizo sausage on sale, so I stuck it in the freezer and was searching for recipes to use it, but have no time as of yet to get recipes. I didn't have any hamburger, which I always make my spaghetti sauce with, but had the sausage. Thus, I decided to add some to see what it would taste like...it was good too. Tweaks are good to do with your food to make a world of flavors you never knew existed till you tweaked.

My God, I am a big fan of pea soup. But whatever is in that cup just looks disgusting. And then you put almonds in there too? I would respond more but I have to go and throw up.

It's actually the best pea soup I've had. And the almonds added a nice texture contrast. I'm pretty proud of myself (pat pat).

@porwest That is for sure true. I like "delicate and thoughtful presentation," but you can't always judge a food by its appearance.

@TheHorse I am sure it does taste good. Although I am still not sure about the almonds, but mainly because I do not like nuts. There are some dishes I have made that look like they have already been processed by the body and they taste much better than they look.

Is that all the soup you had? haha I ask because the cup seems small, and the soup looks very tasty, I love soups and creams and all that's warm and delicious so I'm glad to hear it was tasty. I have made a lot of tweaks to recipes...mostly I think of a meal and try to prepare it with whatever's in hand, most times it's very good!
