Who hasn't tried a donut in their life. Getting donuts and other pastries at the local bakery on a Sunday morning was something I really looked forward to growing up. Cream filled and crumb buns were my favorites. I remember my Dad enjoying the jelly-filled ones. Church followed by those wonderful sweets made for a perfect start to my day. Wonder if the donuts were a way my parents enticed me to go to church? Anyway, the donuts were not always made as they are today. Like many things this tasty treat went through a process before reaching it's current delicious state. Here are some fun facts I found out while researching the donut... -Donuts were originally called "oily cakes" because they were fried in pork fat. This sweet tasting dessert was brought by the Dutch to New York (U.S.) around 1808. -Hanson Gregory, an American, claimed to have invented the ring-shaped doughnut in 1847 because he was unhappy with the raw center of donuts made at that time. -By the mid-19th century, the doughnut looked and tasted like today's American donut. -Doughnut is the traditional spelling and still dominates even in the United States though donut is often used. -There are 2 kinds of donuts; yeast or cake made. They contain the same ingredients but use different types of flour. -The denser kind of donut uses cake flour and has a lower gluten content vs the airy yeast flour donut. Now, there are some facts you don't have to be "Glazed and Confused" about anymore in the history of the doughnut. Hope you enjoyed that bit of a donut tutorial. Do you have a favorite kind of donut? I like the European equivalent of doughnuts, they are called Krapfens or Berliner (Kfrapens is Austrian, Berliner German), they have no hole in the center (but the center is not raw) they are filled with jam or custard. I love those filled with custard. In France they are called "beignets" they are smaller and airy, may be my favorite.

@thelme55 I like the same Thelma and they are not as greasy as American doughnuts. I know the Dutch donuts, they are called Oliebollen, I made them last year during Carnival time, they are good, almost identical to the French beignets.

My favorite is Boston Cream. I don't eat them any longer though. They taste great while eating them but then I wind up feeling sick and with heartburn. It isn't worth it to me.

Very interesting facts. I didn't know any of them. My favorite is one I don't know the name of, but I call the tractor wheel because it looks like tractor tires. After that, it's jelly and custard-filled. Oh and must be chocolate for the custard-filled.

@dgobucks226 Yum! Now I'm waiting patiently for my newly ordered coffee maker to get here. I broke my old one (just a single cup maker) - but for $20 I got 5 years of coffee and tea out of it... so that's pretty good I suppose.

@dgobucks226 The first thought when someone says 'donut' is Homer Simpson ... the second thought would be an American cop (I picked that up from the movies) here is a donut ... well ... a donut

There is also a type of donut name a fry cake, and now the rage are for baked donuts which don't have the same calorie content...of course they don't taste as good either, at least in my opinion.

Never heard of a fry cake donut. Looked it up. The oil must make for a crunchy crust. I agree. Usually foods with less calories defeat the purpose of having a delicious treat Here is a link which explains the whole process of making donuts...Enjoy and thanks for responding!

These are very interesting facts. Thanks for sharing the info. I am not fond of eating doughnuts as I don“t like them much. So sweet and fatty. The last time I have eaten it was last year in Amsterdam when my relatives ordered them in the cafe. I had stomach trouble after that.
