One of our peppermint trees

About a week ago, we planted five peppermint trees. It seems peppermint trees are only found in south-west Western Australia and most myLotters had never heard of them. They are a shady tree with bark somewhat like a paperbark. They are prevalent along our coastlines and many a camping ground is situated under and among these trees. We’ve made netting guards for them to stop the rabbits from eating the bark and killing them. Now we’re hoping they’ll grow quickly and create some shade along the fence-line. The half-drum you can see at the top of the photo is one of three containers that we keep filled with water for the kangaroos and the birds. The trees are watered automatically each day.

It's just chicken wire but it should keep the roos and rabbits from eating the trees.

@DocAndersen It's common to do this here with young trees. I also have netting round my few roses but it's doesn't always stop the pests! lol

You bent one of his little limbs! I bet he feels pins and needles when you finally straightened it out. When I was a kid we had half drums like that for the chickens and pigs could get a drink when ever they wanted one.

Yes, he is a bit bent. We might need to stake it. 44-gallon drums have a lot of uses on a farm.

You are right I am not aware of peppermint trees. I only know about peppermint candies. Which we used to take in childhood. Now no more seen. They were like balls with colourful strips on it.

It is well protected, I hope it will go strong. How long it takes before the tree reaches around 2 meters?

@JudyEv They grow pretty fast. The fastest growing trees I know are the poplars, around 2 meters per year.

@LadyDuck Wow, that is fast. Some weeds grow fast too. I've always wanted to poke a ruler next to one and see how much it grows in 24 hours. There is a flat weed that sends up a flower stalk and it must grow incredibly quickly.

I don't really have any idea but it would have to be 3 or 4 years I guess.

I hope Pony saw that netting guard. He used to constantly complain about squirrels. The half drum....reminded me of barbecue arrangement in one of the parks. Three crosses of wood holding it and welded mesh across the top...

@JudyEv Perhaps a sack of oleander leaves under the pot might help. Not that we want them to die..but we need to know what they might find rather unpleasant too. In India, we have no qualms about killing rodents.

Those types of barbecues are used here too. I think the squirrels are too clever to be beaten by such a flimsy guard. They seem really clever little things.

@vandana7 We kill rodents too. And we've just put out virus-laden oats for the wild rabbits - but don't tell anyone on here.

I browsed just to check the feel of the bark and I see it resembles the bark of the Bottle Brush tree.

Never heard of a peppermint tree. How cool. Are the leaves used for their peppermint or is just for viewing pleasure.
