Have you heard of chlorodyne?

The photo has nothing to do with the discussion. The six goats - twins and quadruplets - were born two days ago. All doing well. Back in the 1970s, my husband, Vince, played drums in a dance band. There were four in the group – two brothers, the wife of one and Vince. They would receive a fee for playing and were usually given free alcohol. The three men would imbibe freely and Vince often had a hangover next morning. One morning, when he was suffering badly, the friend we were staying with offered him some chlorodyne. It did seem to help. We were reminiscing about this recently with this same friend and she told us it was a mixture of laudanum, tincture of cannabis and chloroform. Laudanum is an alcoholic solution of opium. No wonder it helped with his hangovers! The bottle now resides in a locked display case in the little museum in that town. Wikipedia says that chlorodyne was one of the best known patent medicines sold in the UK. A Dr John Collis Browne was a doctor in the British Indian Army and invented the concoction in the 19th century, originally for the treatment of cholera. It seems its high opiate content made it highly addictive. So have any of our UK readers heard of chlorodyne?

Boy, what a concoction. I wonder how many people were addicted to it back then

Did Vince enjoy it? And how many bottles a day does he go through now? BTW, I showed the other photo of the baby goats to Pretty... She claims she's going to go pick up all six of them from you and bring them home with her. *sigh* Thanks a lot, Judy! I will NOT be showing her this one! (I'm afraid she'll really try to get some if I do. )

I haven,t but when my ex was a baby..his parents had hired a nurse to help out with him. She was giving him paragoric which I think is a similar sort of thing to keep him quiet. She got fired of course.

It seems it was quite common at one time to give babies laudanum too.

Years and years ago, lots of medicines seemed to have cannabis in them.

@JimBo452020 I'd forgotten that. Lots of very old US labels mention cannabis.

@JudyEv In many countries, open Cannabis use is legal. Yet I think its overdose could be lethal !

Cannabis and chloroform, I've heard of these two substances. I think the doctor gave me chloroform to put me to sleep, before my surgery in 1953. I was profusely vomiting afterwards, a very sick baby! Those goats, such beautiful babies:)

Chloroform was widely used as an anaesthetic and often caused vomiting after. Maybe it still is used for that purpose.

Cute kids! Wow, is it typical for a goat to have more than 1 at a time? That sounds like quite the medicine! Didnt know of it. Do know of Laudanum though, still used under a different name to treat certain things like GI stuff on people who've had a lot of surgeries

Multiple births are probably the norm for goats, especially the Nigerian dwarves. I thought, in old novels, women would often be addicted to laudanum.

@JudyEv Ah yes - I think in the old times the laudanum was a lot stronger. MOmma takes it (due to some of the after effect of all of her GI surgeries) --- says she feels nothing with it,(shucks!) other than it calms stomach issues

@JudyEv Yes one has to be sure as to how much to use. So perhaps some regulation is needed.

I've never heard of it, but can use some right now. Hubs made me a huge martini and gave me a huge glass of New Zealand (close enough) of sauvignon blanc. Hiccup!

Raso - I hadn't heard of that cure. People try just about anything when they have a bad hangover. I think it's best not to get it in the first place.
