Thursday's Adventures

I have to say that there really wasn't any big adventures today! We ran errands in the next town over.
We had to go to the co-op and get corn for the heater. Corn is the alternative when you can't find the wood pellets. Since they have been storing the wood pellets outside and they are damp, wet and falling apart, it is kind of hard to get them to burn right. So corn it is.
We also stopped at Dollar Tree for me to get a few things in the craft area to finsih up a couple of projects. That didn't take too long and we headed on down the road to Tractor Supply to get a new part for the mower. Oh, and baby chicks were in stock so I got to watch them. So cute but I'll be incubating some of my own eggs this year. I have it all set up and just letting it run a few days to make sure the temperature and humidity stays in range. I also want to wait until the last night in the 30's passes which should be Saturday night.
We topped off the day with an early dinner at Arbys. We actually just went through the drive through and brought it home and it was more like our usual dinner time then.
That's how my day went. How was yours?

@LadyDuck I agree with that. Hub gets annoyed when he asks employees where such and such is in a store and they don't even know what it is. As far as the wood pellets go, someone tried to sell him the wood pellets for BQ grills which are expensive!!

I have mine running a test run before I put eggs in. Temperature drops again this weekend into 30's and with no insulation in the house, I wanted to see how bad temp and humidity fall/rise. I should have set up a better log (with daily conditions/temps and overnight lows - but no this dummy didn't). I have been logging temps and humidity at different times of day/night.

@wolfgirl569 I am going to load it tomorrow. I have logged the past week and see how much it increases temp during day and also how high the humidity went today when all the water ran dry. We don't have any more temps in the 30's at night so won't be much with flucuations with weather. I'm ready!

@kareng The big thing I have a problem with is the humidity. And sometimes the incubator lid gets propped up a little in the summer because this house gets very warm. I have learned to just keep a minimum of water in it at all times

The feed stores here have baby birds, too. My main flock is not laying. They may be too old but I do not dare bring in baby birds, not with my young Heeler Rufus. He would have a grand time. Ahem. Today I've been going around in circles, thinking too much cause hubby is thinking about his retirement in the Fall and we have to figure how to sell this place or rent it and when do we think we will move?? (A year from June??) On and on goes my busy brain. I did toss a couple of little trashy things so that was good.

Mine have started laying again but it is probably warmer here than in Washington! We have decided we don't want to stay here with the bizarre winter weather. It will just get worse with us being able to handle it as we get older. We have to get to work on the old house in LA and get it sold first. There is always too much to do!

@kareng Materials for construction have gone up a lot in the last couple of years. Its hard to repair a place and still make money when you sell it. My two youngest hens are laying but not the older four. Plus I have two freeloader ducks. My winter has been kind this time around. Just one week of snow. I love it but it was weird.

@sallypup How old are your oldest? I saw a chart online that showed hens were only at half capacity of their laying years at 4-5 years old. At ten most stop laying. My original girls will be nine this year but I only have one or two left and the two roosters of them.

You're the second person in the last two days who has mentioned eating at Arby's. So that brings the total number of people I know who eat at Arby's to 2. I swear I don't know how they stay in business.

@moffittjc I understand. You have lots of other choices though. I'm in the country and even in the next town over, just the regular McDonalds, Burger King, Taco Bell, KFC, Churches Fried Chicken, Sonic. And Arby's.

@kareng I will eat there maybe once a year. I don't think their food is that bad, but I was just saying I never see anyone at their restaurants.

Good luck with the chickens. Nothing much went on yesterday. Our little housekeeper didn't come because she hurt her back. We had a ton of little projects for her to do.

@LindaOHio Yes, from finches on up to Macaws and different species of Amazons. It was a lot of fun and I enjoyed the genetics in coloring for the parakeets, cockatiels and lovebirds.

@kareng You raised parrots? How cool. I love parrots -- especially the gray ones.

I like Dollar Tree. So many neat little items there. Always curious what new things they will have in stock. Nice to have your own egg supply. I remember my Mom telling me how she used to have to get the eggs from those hens when she was a little girl. And how she use to have to hold the legs of a chicken for her mother when she chopped off their head
Guess that's what they did back in the olden days.

@kareng When she held the legs of the hen my Mom turned away and didn't look. Can't blame her.
She said my Grandmother used to take some sticks and form it into a cross to put on the bird to calm it. Very strange?
At least my mom had no negative effects from the experience. At least she never indicated she did

@dgobucks226 If the cross on the chickens made her feel better, it was worth doing. I've never heard of that being a tradition or anything. Who knows!

There is a group that live in my house, that when asked what fast food - it is only Arby's. funny, here where we live, there are no Arbys. But, there is one of the chains that later became part of Arbys (Roy Rogers)!

You seem to have had a good day, when I saw your photo of the baby chicks, it reminded me of years ago, I worked at a hatchery, I use to vaccinate baby chicks. Arby's sounds good, we don't have one near us. Enjoy the rest of your day.

It's been quite a while since I ordered anything from Arby's. I am a horseradish fan. So, you know the kind of sauce I get.
