Why did nobody help this poor Asian woman?

By now you've probably seen the footage of a man in New York brutally attacking a 65-year-old Asian woman on the sidewalk in front of a fancy building. What is most odd to me is that the security guard and others did nothing to stop the attack, and did not even rush to help her after the assailant left the scene. Coincidentally, I was buying stuff at the local Rite Aid yesterday at about the same moment when a man fled with a bottle of booze right in front of me. The employees yelled at the guy, but did not pursue him. They told me that they are trained to get the license plate number of shoplifters and other criminals, if possible, but not to chase them or physically confront them. Happily, the 65-year-old Asian woman is in stable condition at a local hospital and will survive her injuries. Selfishly, reading about this incident inspired me to do some serious work on my book about working with poor kids in the "'hood." Had you seen this video before?

In my country we are not very racists except with the natives who rightfully lived here before the Spaniards came. That does not mean there is peace. Since the covid started, the amount of violence is many times as it was before. Gangs here have great imagination. They use all sorts of devises to do wrong.

@TheHorse We have people who deal with narcotics. Other people just want money the easy way. They have weapons and use minors.

Desperate people who probably lost their jobs, are financially ruined and or lost a loved one due to the pandemic need someone or something to blame, it's no different from Nazi Germans prior to the second world war, very disturbing and disgusting. First time I saw this, glad she is doing well. Good luck on the book you are writing.

@TheHorse well adjusted individuals like us could handle it if I need to brag a bit but not everybody can. I lost a lot of money during the last financial crisis of 2008-09 due to carelessness and irresponsibility of big U.S. Banks that that also caused a housing bubble and sent shock waves throughout the world but it did not turn me anti-America one bit lol. Things happen and it's up to us to make it better. You deal with kids and this sort of hate attitude probably starts in childhood, am I right?

@louievill Yes. Perhaps not the earliest years of childhood, but children are heavily influenced by their parents' attitudes.

I wonder how we can change that mentality. I lost two jobs due to the pandemic but never felt the need to blame anyone. Now I'm scratching and clawing to have work here and there. Racism is absurd. The US has been "multi-cultural" for centuries.

I feel sad when l hear about my fellow Asians getting harmed over there. I just hope that it is not a racist crime of sorts and just a random act of violence against anyone. I truly believe that racism is not tolerated in your place it just is that some people still practice that in your place.

I believe that to be the case. I wokred a couple of hours at my (African) friend's preschool today, and we took the kids to the park. There were black, white, Latino, Asian, Middle Eastern and "other" kids and parents and teachers, all getting along. This is the norm here. But there are still those who are racist (black, white, and other), and racist incidents (sometimes) make the news.

It's happening, and unfortunately it is racist. Many of these people being attacked might be of Asian descent, but they are born in America and are Americans. This is all so wrong. It's like here in the US, we are going backwards, and it makes me very sad. Who cares where someone's ancestors came from, or what country they descended from? I certainly don't, I never have. We all descended from immigrants here. Makes me ashamed.

I tend to avoid the news as much as possible but if I saw somebody beating on another, I'd intervene if at all possible. In fact, I did exactly that many years ago.

@TheHorse Some baggy pants snot started beating on a guy who worked at the A&W in the mall, when the food worker stepped outside for a break. Baggy pants thought food worker was trying to steal his girlfriend. I yelled at him and then went to the security office (which was just inside that entrance). The police came and arrested baggy pants and took my name as a witness. I got subpoenaed and went to court but didn't have to testify because baggy pants (now cleaned up and in a suit, no less) admitted to the charge and apologized, etc.

I just saw that. I believe these feelings are bound to emerge when somebody feels at disadvantage whether justifiably or otherwise. Perception through eyes is natural, whether of race or wealth. It is a double edged sword. The exploited can also raise a hue and cry over stray incident or few stray incidents. That is why you are so precious. You need to kill these feelings in bud by writing books that help parents to teach right values to their children.

I can't watch that kind of brutality but I hope they catch the creep and put him in jail, there is no excuse for that kind of hatred. I don't understand why people would simply look on and watch a woman being beaten by a man, that in itself is horrendous and to have it be about racism is even worse.

Stabbed her in the heart three times. Why was he released early. That is another question that should be answered. Yes, someone should have helped this victim. But the entire story should also be told.
