Rainier Cherries and Bing Cherries. Pretty and I went shopping a few days ago and I bought both types. They're both delicious but I will admit, I prefer the Rainier Cherries... Do you like cherries? Do you have a preference? Bowl of cherries. Photo is mine.

I prefer the dark sweet Bing but both are good. It's cherry time around here and Bings at the stands are going for a buck a pound. I bought too many, I'm sure.

I live in Missouri and there are no roadside stands where I live. I paid $3.99 a pound for mine and $5.99 a pound for the Rainier cherries. I like them or I wouldn't be willing to pay that much for them.

@DaddyEvil They sure are good though. Western Washington here. Fruit and fireworks all along the highway.

@Vikingswest1 It must be nice... I can only wish for fruit stands. Once in a while you can find cherries at the Farmer's Market on Saturday by the park but usually, not. I'm allergic to the smoke from fireworks.

Rainier cherries - yes yes yes - they are definitely first on my list! I see the "red" cherries, but I don't know if they are specifically "Bing" (it doesn't say Bing) . . . but we enjoy those too - particularly if they are deep, dark red .

@DaddyEvil Interesting about eating the grape - will have to try that! Thus far I have had good luck with the regular cherries this season - I just go by the way they look - like I said I like the dark ones. I am seeing less of the Rainier now . . . not sure why.

@much2say Because the Rainier cherries have a shorter season than the red cherries do.

We saw other red cherries at Walmart but I don't know what kind they are. (I tasted one and it wasn't sweet, so I didn't buy any of them. I also learned I need to eat a grape before I buy them since some of them can really be sour.)

Sometimes, I'll also buy the jars of pitted and stemmed cherries. I like adding them to my tea or to ice cream. (I prefer the fresh cherries but they're only available for a couple of months.)

@LadyDuck I'm honestly not sure what the cherries I buy are preserved in. I usually dump the liquid out and just use the cherries. Yes, the season is the end of May, June and half of July... Not nearly enough time.

I love cherries! (by the way, vultures love the taste of people that have eaten cherries FYI)! I snack on them often, but do try to always eat before and after 6 (before 6 pm and after 6 am).

Yes, that's why I've been worrying about you. I never see vultures here and I hope they aren't following you around. Please do be careful. I often have a fresh fruit snack around midnight and don't eat in the morning until we get home from our walk. When I was a bodybuilder, I didn't eat after 6 pm or before 6 am, either. Let me see... I might have a picture of me from back then... DE. Photo is mine.

@DocAndersen I usually don't sleep at night anyway. After Pretty and I take our walk, I go to sleep for a while until she wakes me up around noon. Then we eat and do chores around the house. Sometimes I get in a nap between 6 pm and midnight and then I'm awake all night.

It's cherry season here, too. I bought a few local Bings then yesterday a friend brought more over so we'll freeze some for the winter. First up, though, hubby has asked for a cherry pie.

I'm glad you like cherries. It's the only fruit I don't like. I only bought them once, and that was a mistake. My oldest was a toddler. He got the cherries out of the bin and took them into the bedroom with his sister, climbed into the crib, and well, there was cherry juice from one end of the crib to the other. Never again.

@DaddyEvil My parents went cherry-picking every summer up to Door County. My dad always said, cherries in the bucket, not in your mouth. He said that more for my sister who loves cherries. I guarantee every cherry I picked went into the bucket.

Oh, that's right! It's Rainier season! What I'd really like to find are the sour cherries that my mom called "pie cherries", but I don't know what variety they actually are. Like the nickname says, they're ideal for baking rather than eating out of hand.

I have no clue which ones your mom used, but there are three types that you could be talking about... Morello cherries have a dark red flesh, Amarelle cherries have a yellow-ish flesh and Montmorency are the most popular sour pie cherries sold in the US.

@DaddyEvil From what I've been researching, they were likely Montmorency cherries. My grandpa had a big tree of them!

I just made a bunch of turkey bacon and scrambled eggs with onions and bell peppers in them. I'd be happy to share with you. The Rainier cherries are available for a very short time when the Bing cherries first appear in the grocery store here. Usually, only for two to three weeks and they're all gone.
